Interested in where you think Burger might end up in the pantheon of SCFC number 8's of the last 50 years. Appreciate he can play 6 too, by that's another debate.
Been racking my brains for true 8s (box to box, bit of both, high energy types) and have a personal top 5 as follows:
Hudson N'Zonzi Thomas Orlyggson Kavagnah
Didn't see much of Eustace as lived away. For me, I think he could slip between Fonz and Micky T. Quite an erotic thought.

According to this article www.coachesvoice.com/cv/number-8-football-tactics-henderson-kroos-modric-iniesta/ the number 8 is one of the 2 wide midfielders in a 433 in front of the central DM (no 6 in old currency). I think Burger has been playing as the no 6 when we have lined up in a 433 but he looks to have been given a bit more licence to go forward so it looks like he is playing as an 8 at times. If Schumacher does want all his midfielders to support the attack then you can see why Pearson appears to be out of favour - he's more of an out and out DM who rarely gets that far forward. In terms of players the one he reminds me of most is N'Zonzi - just not quite as cool. Obviously not at the same level but he's shaping up to be a genuine class act and if he keeps up his current rate of improvement could have a career at a higher level.

N'Zonzi was a Rolls Royce of a player, but still not as good as Hudson. Too early to say where Burger fits yet.

If you ever want proof that a good chunk of Stoke fans are blind at spotting footballers - all you have to do is remember the stick N'Zonzi got right through his time here from a pretty big portion of the fan base.
I spent hours arguing with some tool at an afters once who thought N'Zonzi was shit and only passed backward.
In pure footballing quality terms - top 3 players of my lifetime.

Certain quotes about N’Zonzi from some of our fans make me laugh. “He was good because he had Whelan to do all his running” This was about a bloke who consistently covered more ground than any teammate (obviously under Hughes, Pulis CM’s weren’t allowed that sort of freedom). He was very close to being the full package Athletic, tall, physical and boy could he play. Much like Arnie in that if you were writing down his weaknesses you wouldn’t need a very big piece of paper a stamp or maybe a match box would have been adequate. Fuck I hate nostalgia but I really miss that period.

It's pretty impressive that certain stoke fans wouldn't know a decent footballer if they watched him ping 40 yard weak foot passes on the half turn from the edge of his own box, N'zonzi was the best midfielder ive seen down here and probably ever will see, Went on to win the world cup but he should of won it all, had everything

A little premature for Burger I think, but he has great scope and potential to develop into not only one of the better players ever to play for Stoke, but also one of the most humble & likeable.

Mickey Thomas was more of a winger. The others were just workmanlike players, good but not special. Sorry I went back more than 50 years!

The best No 8 performance for Stoke I've seen was when Affelay played centre midfield - can't remember who it was against but we played them off the park with his pass completion 95%+. Absolute masterclass.

This all seems a little premature tbh, but anyway
Too young to know Hudson
But if he’s even remotely close to N’Zonzi then we’re blessed, and he won’t be here for long
Legitimately the best player in a stoke shirt many fans will have seen without knowing it.

Only had the privilege of watching Huddy in his second stint and well past his peak but he was still on a different level to the rest on the pitch even then.

He’s potentially the best captain we’ve had in recent times (I was never totally convinced by Ryan Shawcross’s qualities as a captain).
You can already see his leadership qualities on the pitch: vocal and leads by example. But really good off the pitch too: in his interviews he seems driven and constantly talking about needing to improve as an individual and as a team and how to achieve that.

Absolute masterclass. Agreed he was sublime that game but sadly not that consistent. Imagine him and Chelsea-away-Imbula as a centre-mid pairing at their respective bests week in week out.

Arnautovic was very inconsistent until his last 2/3rds of a season with us - he didn't start that one well or even as a regular starter. I thought he was brilliant and at times one of the best players I've seen in a Stoke shirt (and anywhere), but a lot of fans are OTT about certain players too. As for Burger, he's already been hailed as the new messiah and written off numerous times over, originally after that great debut he had. Hopefully it works out well, and if it works out well enough for him to be talked about alongside those names in the opening post (which is a possibility), even better!

The Oatcake has spoken and the top five number 8s since 1980 are: Alan Hudson Steven N'Zonzi (although some in here ...) Howard Kendall Micky Thomas (still think he played centrally in second spell) Brian Talbot (who i had forgotten but loved) Burger has every chance of joining them, imho.
