I think you might have hamstrung your thread when describing him as a number eight. Indeed I do sometimes wonder where all this new parlance such a deep lying number six and other such nonsense when referring to midfielders, actually come from? A number six was always a centre back FFS!
For example, why is a number FOUR never mentioned nowadays? When I first started watching Stoke they (and virtually every other team) lined up like this 2. Mash--------5. Smith---------6. Bloor-------3. -Pejic 7. Conroy-----10. Hudson---4. Mahoney-----11. Salmons ----------------------8. Greenhoff--------------------- --------------------------------9. Ritchie-------------- For me Burger is a number 4 (obviously) but hey, what do I know? And Hudson always was and always will be a number 10, one of the best there's ever been, so there! Hudson can't be defined by a number! A number ten wouldn't pick the ball up from the goalkeeper! He was an artist who didn't paint by numbers, he painted it as he saw it, sometimes to an extent others couldn't see it or understand it! In 100 years time the Simon Sharmer, of the time, will do a series on it, probably! Jimmy Greenhoff will be his Mary! 😁 In Hudson's day the shirt was, to some extent, just one of 11 that the players had to be numbered in. By and large you weren't defined by whatever number you wore. Hudson wore 8 for Chelsea and 10 for Stoke. His roles weren't identical for those two clubs, but similar. Most teams adhered to same sort of numbers, although Everton, for instance, used to have a number 10 who was a central defender. Somewhere along the line Fifa Coaches decided to lay down specific roles attached to each number, and they hold up somewhat, unless you play some outlandish system. 8 today is much closer to 6, frequently they play alongside each other. 10 on the hand is a much freer role further upfield, and sometimes is not even a midfielder but a striker. If I've undeerstood SS correctly, we are burying number 10 for the time being and will play with two 8s and one 6 behind them. But that's just the drawing board theory. We'll have to see a little later how it pans out.

We have sold 3 players to the Prem recently and Burger is better than any of them.
Looking forward to another master class today.

He was everywhere today again, I agree with some, Bakers goals mask his his general offering in play, not a great deal.

He’s top class hopefully he didn’t pick up an injury towards the end. How is it that the ref didn’t see that as a foul.

Best CM by far since we were in the PL
I hope and pray we can keep him in the summer but if he carries on like this it will be highly unlikely.

Some great input - thanks. It we we simplify it to the ranking of best all round central midfielders (Pop Robson types, can attack, defend, pass, tackle, shoot etc) since 1980, we now have: 1. Hudson 2. N'Zonzi 3. Brian Talbot 4. Paul Bracewell 5. TBC Although I'm now doubting whether Hudson should be on that list at all given the comments from those who saw him about his playing style. I started in 86. Sammy Mac, Howard Kendall? [ I didn't see either but I have read that Kendall was brilliant for us when we won promotion, so perhaps he slots in above Talbot. I believe we signed Sammy Mac in his twilight - those who saw him can enlighten us. Thought Burger was sublime today.

A wonderful captain, potentially a Vince Overson type. He gave the Tile Mountain stand a lovely bollocking for moaning in the second half.
Not the usual shithouse Clucas and Allen ear cupping, shushing claptrap. A proper stand up for the side and a good old fashioned wag of the finger.
Well done that man. Fans are very rarely wrong but at times they need telling and that was spot on.

Too have a Nunber 6 absolutely dominate the center of the pitch like that and not be on the winning team must be as hard for him to take as it us.
The guy is absolutely quality, has everything you need and being behind one of his chances which hit the defender he was lucky to not drag us kicking and screaming out the shit.
Proper captain.
Hes a premier league bound CM by anyone's standard with or without us.

The ref didn't see a lot really.Didnt see them kick the ball away twice after the whistle had gone, didn't see several fouls, and when he did he didn't see any that he deemed to be Yellow.Even pull backs when the player was in a strong offensive movement. The assistants were as usual worse than useless.

He'll have to do plenty more to be up there with Mickey The Maestro 😆 Two words that Burger could never match Mickey The Maestro on..."The Shamrock" gone but not forgotten

Yeah, he's off. Far too good for us and far too good for the division. Might not be the Premier League though. There'll be a lot of clubs on the continent after him already I bet.

Sadly Burger is too good for us, I think every outside of the foot pass was on point today. Different class.

Saw him twice try & rally the crowd and ball kids to sharpen up getting the ball back into play quicker, all happened within about 5min in the first half when we were a goal down. Folk seemed to be very slow in the main stand initially getting the ball back to them, then the same in the Tile Mountain a few minutes later when the ball person who didn't seem concerned we were losing & certainly wasn't rushing themselves to get the ball back to the players..!
Great to see player who looks like he genuinely cares for a change, great player & top notch captain!
