Quote from Derby Evening Telegraph after last night's third goal in three games
"You've either got it, or you haven't, and at the age of 34, boy does the former Newcastle United forward still possess that clinical edge that could prove to be lethal in this promotion race."
So what happened at Stoke where we were saying he'd lost it? It's not as if Derby have been tearing up the goal scoring records and the Derby fans I know bemoan the dour football played by Warne. Yet Gayle seems to have found his confidence there and is a folk hero already. Surprising what confidence can do for a player.

Good old Dwight. Three goals against Bristol Rovers, Reading and the Mighty Vale and he's back to his lethal best. 🙄
Anybody want to talk about how the cheating bastard won Derby their penalty last night?

We knew it would happen. We're a graveyard for strikers and we somehow manage to suck the confidence out of them all. I think if those first few disallowed goals that he scored when he first joined had counted then things could have been different. But the monkey stayed on his back and he couldn't get off the mark, his confidence went and every time he got a chance he snatched at it due to his desperation to score. And then it became a mental block for him and he would have been well aware that he'd become a joke figure for the fans. Now he's got a new environment with fans that don't think he's useless and past it, with a bit of help from playing at a lower level and hey presto he's suddenly found out how to score again. One day we'll have a goalscoring striker again. I suspect it'll be after I'm dead though

Gayle is 34 and had a long career. He has only been a "prolific" scorer 3 seasons in that time and never in the Premier League.
His last prolific season was 2018-19 on loan at WBA. There, he was used in a striker partnership with Jay Rodriguez who scored almost as many. Gayle was only ever used as a loan striker at Stoke.
He has dropped down a level and playing against a lower standard of defenders.
Good luck to him. If he had hit the ground running a Stoke with goals early in his tenure, who knows what would have happened? Stikers feed on confidence.

I'd imagine there's a fair bit of pressure at a big club like Derby trying to get out of League One in a tight promotion race. As there would be with us if we get relegated. Probably more pressure than bumming around in mid table at Stoke. I think it's just confidence. He's hit the ground running and got the monkey off his back early doors rather than going months without scoring like he did here. He feels the love and not a joke like he was here. And the level is lower and a bit more forgiving.

I for my sins watched orient vs the vale last night and the level of football was just atrocious, most of us could bag a goal or two a season in that league
God forbid we do drop into league one

I'm happy for Gayle and that it's working out in L1 but he was cleary done at this level even at out s$5t show of a club over the last 2 years - we signed him 4 years too late.
He had plenty of chances and missed numerous sitters.
Lets see how many goals he scores next year if Derby get promoted. If he score more than 10 then you can come on and moan then, but more than likley he'll be injured soon and out for a while and probably will play about 20 games next season.

You would have thought so but on the other hand on other threads on here we are told that Stoke are doomed if we get relegated because we'll never get back up. If all our squad improved their performances like Gayle has presumably we'd walk League 1. Can't have it both ways.
