Sunderland away approaching on the horizon come the end of January, gotta be worth a punt on him getting a brace at the SOL whether it be from the bench or starting 11..?! 🙏🏻🤞🏻🫣

If he couldn't get a touch on Hoever's cross today he's just not going to score. It didn't need good contact, just a deflection off his body and he just seemed to get his feet and legs tied in knots attempting to do that.

Tezgel must be way off the pace after a long injury. Hasn't he only played 1 u-18s game since he's been out? He’s played more than that. But not much. He was with the squad at Watford so is in and around so that’s good. I think they’re being very sensible with him tbh. But I really hope he gets some good game time and stays fit in the second half of the season. What would be a good amount of game time for him? Haven't watched the youth so have no idea where he's at, but def got excited by highlights I saw a while back. And do you think Lowe will make it and get some time?

If he watches the ball come over and is agressive, wanting to score then he does. It looked like he’s taking the piss and wants away. Cancel his contract.

Fit and ready he should be coming on up front as the first change imo. But staying fit is his issue. I think if he can stay fit, he will be a big asset. He’s strong, good in the air and can finish. I think Lowe will make it but I’d loan him out ideally. He needs games.

After Joe Allen's contract expired, we finally had some additional wiggle-room with the wage bill. It could have been a bit of a turning point for us, but we signed Gayle instead. It was honestly the worst thing MoN did at the club, and has basically done nothing but hold us back in the market for another two years. It has been a disastrous transfer for both parties and yet another example of our really horrible transfer record that stretches all the way back to the January we signed Imbula. Fully expect Gayle to either retire or drop down into the third tier (where he'd still probably only be an impact sub) after we release him this summer.
Gayle comes across as a good, honest pro. He seems to be well-liked in the dressing room, so I bear him no ill will. But he is way past it, and has been for years. Would have been a fantastic loan signing in 2017-18, but we shouldn't have touched him with a barge pole by the time he was a 32-year old free agent who had barely played any league football in his last two years at Newcastle.
He gets into good positions, but it means nothing if he doesn't finish them, and he doesn't exactly offer much of a physical threat either these days. At the moment, he is doing nothing but keeping Lowe off the pitch.

An elephant in the room is already obvious. That said the fact that Gayle has lost his edge is obviously obvious I guess.

Totally get all that, was actually meant more tongue in cheek as its the Sunderland away match he was most impactive last season. Was thinking playing against his old bitter rivals may have spurred him on as we used to see the likes of Clucas do v Swansea! Unlikely granted, but always a chance..

He’s really bad isn’t he.
I heard a conversation walking to Blurton/Heron Cross between a man and woman that made me giggle as they both made decent points.
Woman - “why if you’re going long would you bring one of our smallest strikers on” - good point
Man - “I think he thought he’d run a bit more as Wesley is so static”
Woman - “but Wesley is 6ft 4, he’s a targetman”
Man - “ ultimately I don’t think it matters as Wesley is just shit” 🤣🤣🤣

I think he brought Gayle on because he's more mobile than Wesley but I'm a bit disappointed he didn't bring Lowe on, as he's mobile, a big lad and can operate as a target man.

It's difficult to know what's gone wrong with Gayle. He's not as mobile as he was but can still get into scoring positions, he just makes a complete mess of it when he gets there. I'm beginning to wonder whether his issues are psychological. He reminds me of a golfer with the yips.

He won two time wasting free kicks.
The only touch I can remember him having was when he kicked the ball 30 feet in the air near the half way line.

Gayle must have it tied into his contract that he plays a certain amount of minutes

The sooner we can get rid of Gayle the better, and even if big Wes isn't very mobile he can at least hold the ball up. Gayle is finished and should be offloaded ASAP, but I guess it will be impossible to find any takers!?

Even Martin Carruthers was more potent than this version of Dwight Gayle that we’ve got.

Agree about MON a definite sign he’d lost the plot.

Gayle is finished and should be offloaded ASAP, but I guess it will be impossible to find any takers!? Assume his contract ends this summer? Taken from the Sentinel... There are eight players, plus the loan trio, who are out of contract at the end of the season. The list is led by Tyrese Campbell and Jordan Thompson while Wesley, Enda Stevens and Clark signed one-year deals when they joined. Gayle, Wright-Phillips and Noekeu are also coming to the end of their current terms. Thompson and Campbell are the only ones we should even be thinking about. That means 6 plus 3 loans leaving, plenty of scope for the new manager to put his stamp on things

Yes, I think that's right, but if possible in January is my opinion on this one. Even if we only save £2000-3000 per week.

He's definitely past it and shouldn't be getting minutes on the pitch - he was breathing out his backside after his cameo yesterday - but the chance he missed wasn't as easy by any means. Beautiful ball in by Hoever but it was coming from behind him, over his shoulder and across his weaker foot. I would have much preferred to see Lowe on rather than Gayle but Lowe probably isn't experienced/clever enough yet to find the space that Gayle did in the first place.

Even Martin Carruthers was more potent than this version of Dwight Gayle that we’ve got. Begovic was more potent than our version of Gayle. He must need to wear contacts or something whilst he's playing because older strikers are normally better at finishing chances, they just lack pace and are often easily marked out of a game

You just couldn't fill the slot in the squad for that much it's no more effective than just paying him up. U21's probably get more than that.

I'd imagine he'll stay until the end of the season then retire, he must know himself it just isn't there.
