Steino did prove that he could cut it in the top flight. When he first went to Chelsea he was unstoppable until he got injured. Best striker has to be John Ritchie for me.

I knew it was a farce of a list when there was no mention of Keith Scott. Allan Smart must have been what they called in the charts...bubbling under Cracking right hook on him at least.

Who wrote that shit
It doesn’t need a genius to know who our best striker ever was. He’s the one that scored the most goals (and all on the top league ) Big John. No contest

Best 12 strikers since 1986 (when I started going):
1. Steino 2. Fuller 3. Sheron 4. Walters 5. Crouch 6. Thorne 7. Beattie 8. Biggins 9. Saunders 10. Arnie (he did occasionally play up top and ..) 11. Akinbiyi 12. Er, not Sam Vokes. Jones. He should be higher. But I forgot him so don't get all pissy. I've had a beer. Maybe 8th?

Walters scored 1 in 5. No matter how much we love the guy he shouldn’t be in a top 10 strikers list.

Laughable. Ritchie and Steele have to be top two. No contest. Many of us have never seen them, there again if you've never seen them why would you include them in your list at all? Look at there records. Most of us have never seen sir Stan play. I don't think there would be much argument who our best ever right winger was.

Lee Chapman as much as he was disliked scored 34 goals in 99 matches for us. All in the top flight. Baffling list.

Lists eh? Every time a list is produced, there is at least one notable omission or controversial inclusion, such as top 30 suspense movies without Vertigo by Alfred Hitchcock, best albums without Sgt Pepper at no.1, or top 100 hottest blonde Jewish TV presenters without Vanessa Feltz.
Its how the compilers of said lists encourage readership, debate, controversy and (by definition) interest. They do it on purpose

Don’t think ‘nonsense’ quite covers it. Freddie Steele 11th is a joke 140/224 Thorn and Stein were nowhere near as good as Greenhoff. And Fuller 43/182 and Walters 43/226 , 1 and 2 really? NO NO NO John Ritchie 176 goals for Stoke alone in 351 games undisputed greatest ever! Final answer!

Laughable, Freddie Steele was head and shoulders the best striker we’ve ever had followed by John Richie. Closely followed by the likes of Fuller, Greenhoff and Stein. Kenwyne Jones on the list, give me a break!

Thorne scored 80 in 189 so just over 1 in 2 ratio. Still a bloody legend though and my fave player.
Sheron was 39 in 71 so better that 1 in 2. His 2 goals in the last derby at the vic versus the vile will live with me forever.

Kenwyne Jones on the list, give me a break! On paper Steele looks easily the best but even I am not old enough to have seen him play. I have been watching Stoke since the mid 1960's and feel I could have a genuine assessment of players since 1970. For me Ritchie and Greenhoff comfortably the best strikers I have seen.

I would agree with that, I didn’t see Steele in the flesh having been born in the fifties but my dad’s stories about him convince me he was really something special. That will do for me!

There may not be a fan alive now who saw him play, but Tommy Sale should always be in a top 10 of Stoke City strikers surely?

Can’t argue with Ritchie or Steele one and two but after that depends on how you define a striker or whether you include their achievements before coming to Stoke but there have been top goal scorers over the years. People have mentioned Stein and Thorne , fair enough. In the modern era Fuller and Walters - good players but top strikers ? Not so sure. People seem reluctant to recognise Crooks or Chapman and maybe forgotten ( or never saw) Dennis Viollet, Roy Vernon, Peter Dobing or Geoff Hurst . Interesting thread though, no clear answers and, of course, really great strikers are a rare commodity.

Walters had far more quality supporting him and providing the chances than Thorne/Biggins could ever dream of. I don't know the exact number of times he played in each position, but I recall him playing more times on the right wing creating chances for other people. Thorne is my favourite ever stoke player. I don't think he'd have scored that many goals with vidic, Terry, ferdinand etc marking him.
