Spain fell over too easily, didn't like that. But they thoroughly outclassed us today and deserved it. They gave us something of a lesson, and there was shithousing from both sides: Stanway left her foot in on 3 occasions? and overlooking her efforts to disrupt the penalty taker,Bronze takes every throw-in about 20 yards further up the pitch than where the ball went out. Thought Spain's no 6 and 8 were magnificent. It's not a bad hand when when you can bring on a player like Putellas to run the clock down. England's best player was the keeper, which is instructive. Thought James kept dropping too deep when she came on,although was probably forced into it to try and secure half decent possession. Final was contested by currently the two best teams in the World.

Correct on both counts. It's such a shame that cynical time-wasting etc is such a successful tactic. The ref bottling the second yellow for kicking the ball away was a disgrace. The ref was utterly appalling all game. Make no mistakes though, the best team won, we simply weren't good enough when it mattered. Bronze was awful Hemp's quality was poor Russo was isolated and ineffective Walsh was absent for most of the game When that many of our main talents/threats don't perform, we've got very little chance Can’t argue with any of that

Since Spain played with their B-team (13 A-team squad players missing) in this tournament, you realize they will be difficult to pass in the Nations League to reach the Olympics next summer.

That’s because Prince William wasn’t there that is If it were the men in the world cup final he would have been there 🤔 not so sure Prince William would have been in Qatar had England made the Final last year..

Gutted we lost, but i thought the ref was garbage and bottled the red card, and i detest rolling around spoiler tactics the spanish use in men and womens football. I even mentioned it on the match thread yesterday when chiqo was doing it. Yeah, that is the most depressing aspect of it all: that the Spanish women have adopted the same tactics as the Spanish men, roll around, feign injury, break up play, time waste and they've shown the world that doing all those things is very successful. Or at least, makes a good side even harder to beat. One of the things I enjoyed about womens football was the general absence of all that. Not any more. Every side will now be doing so much more of all that. It's a shame.

If it were the men in the world cup final he would have been there He wouldn't because of what I said about Royal rules/constitution. The Royals make their own rules, Charles doesn't seem the type to go by the book.

I thought England looked slow & sluggish throughout the game today.
Spain always seemed like they have another gear to step up if needed

Swedish expert commentator
"The referee standard has been extremely high in this tournament!"
Really? 🤔 The same expert commentator who said Sweden dominated the second half against Spain and their goals came out of the blue.

The women's game is growing, how can it grow without the people at the top taking it seriously and giving them their full backing. Surely we all want the men's and women's game to be on a par at some point. The players will know that they have nobody representing them from back home and for me it hurts the women's game. It's like saying they aren't as important and it's disappointing.

The only gripe I have with the ref was that every time a free kick was being set up, it was like a girls night out, all smiles.

It's like saying they aren't as important and it's disappointing. I don’t really agree with that to a certain extent. The women’s game doesn’t need the people at the top representing them, that’s not what football is. They need the “normal” people to actually go and support them in the leagues, but very little do. The game will never grow as much until clubs start regularly packing out their grounds for the women’s matches, feels a long away from that. I’d argue what hurts more is seeing great crowds at Wembley when people are on the hype and then going back to mostly empty grounds

That with the coverage it gets now is incredible, and to say it's not getting a full backing is nonsense. Just because one royal doesn't turn up doesn't mean it's damaging the game. That's a bit laughable.

It was a bit like the Barca of the Iniesta era playing the current day Stoke. The midfields were miles apart. Only the under-rated Carter and Earps really played well, though I thought the Swedish and (especially) the Dutch keepers were better.

That's a bit laughable. They had a comparison in the TV studio here, it was quite fascinating. If I remember correctly: Each participant in the World Champ 2023 gets at least 200.000 SEK (£15.000). Bronze medalists gets 2.000.000 SEK (£150.000) each. Silver and gold medalists even higher, I assume. In 1995 when Sweden arranged the World Champ we had 8000 people in the crowd on average. In the 2023 World Champs the average has been 37.000 spectators per game. 2 billions on the globe have watched some of it on tv/mobile phone/comp/pad. We don't have to compare men's and women's football. Just enjoy! And if you don't, well don't.

Might not be a popular opinion but ….. Not watched any of this competition but caught the second half today. The standard is Sunday League and that’s being generous. You can see why when ever these ladies sides play under 15sides they get whooped. Asking for the same salaries as the men’s game is beyond funny
If it floats your boat that’s fine but having watched 45 minutes it’ll be an awful long time before I watch it again

We don't have to compare men's and women's football. Just enjoy! And if you don't, well don't. I absolutely agree. Men and womens versions of sports should be treated as separate entities. The issue comes when people in favour of womens’ versions politicise it. Eg using the English womens teams fantastic success as a stick to beat the mens’ team with for their perpetual misfortune and ineptitude for the better part of 60 years now. When this happens then the people doing so are going into a gunfight with a rolling pin because there’s a rock solid logical argument that winning a womens’ major and a mens’ major simply isn’t the same achievement. The global pool of female players is far smaller than the global pool of male players. Aside from this, on average men and women are different and men are generally far more athletically driven than women. I’m not saying this to demean the achievements of female athletes. They are outliers and deserve their adulation; but it’s a fatal error for antagonists on that side of the debate to stir the hornets nest in the way I describe. I’m not bothered about women’s football but that’s purely stylistic; I’ve prob watched less than 10 non-stoke football matches in total of any gender since we were relegated. The women’s euro final was one I did watch actually and it was good fun. And I love many other women’s sports at the highest level. I could spend a day watching the latter stages of a women’s squash tournament for example. But women’s football has become a battleground for modern politics zzzzz and so don’t be surprised when there’s pushback. If that multi coloured haired American woman is being held up as a global ambassador for the women’s game and the fight for equal pay for a vastly inferior product then you’ve lost already.

Having said that, this particular game was frankly poor - it reminded me of a match between something like "Station Hotel v Dog and Doublet".

I thought we were poor today, totally outclassed by a technically far superior Spain, who seemed so much fitter and faster and totally over ran us all game..Im not a massive women's footy fan and probably won't watch another game until another big tournament, but today was different....id have liked us to have beaten the Spanish though. I thought the ref was a preening cunt.

When I was a child, there was “hype” around cricket for a time (which was lost on me) and “hype” around rugby. The latter caught my interest and soon I was playing and training in a team. It was good for my development as a young teen and for my life skills. Not everything is designed to inspire a middle-aged man who only want to watch men’s football. People should take National pride in the achievements of these women. If they inspire young girls (and boys) to get into football, what is wrong with that? It’s laughable how unpatriotic some can be, revelling in their country NOT winning a major tournament and trying to downplay it at every turn.

My wee lass is 8 and regularly has YouTube football videos on and plays Fifa. Eight month ago the blokes World Cup barely registered. The women's one though we must have watched 8 games together and she watches highlights of games she missed. The next euros hopefully will be where it really takes off.
