The only ones who need to grow up are the ones defending this crap and who have no standards. Sick to death of the happy clappers that have allowed this club to become a ruin. It started with clapping them off when relegated. The tone was set. Failure was accepted. A meek surrender. Makes me sick. I can assure you the people giving that kind of abuse have no standards whatsoever. You can let players know how you feel without that kind of filth. If you think it's acceptable then you're just as bad. The post is not about accepting crap, but you know that.

Relegation from the Premier League is one thing. The subsequent seasons we've had to endure are another. Your comment about Brentford and Brighton is wishful thinking but not based on anything- Bournemouth are a similar sized club to Brentford but bounced back a lot better than we have (albeit not straight away) I think the reason they were able to bounce back as with other clubs who do was that they had saleable assets both during their time in the Premier and once they got relegated - Ake, Wilson amongst others who I can't remember and can't be bothered to look up. Hence no problem with FFP. We had an ageing squad full of players nobody wanted to spend big on. I can't remember us ever having a player that interested the big spenders. In my opinion the blame for that originates with Pulis who once we were established never but a young player to develop and insisted on ageing crocks. I personally think that he would have struggled to rebuild his squad once the likes of Huth, Shawcross, Whelan, Walters and Crouch needed replacing. Hughes tried to reduce the age but failed to replace the backbone and apart from Arnautovic didn't develop players to sell on. Rowett likewise didn't bring in young players. We have tried to transition to that sort of squad but as long as we had high earning ageing players it was going to be a struggle. If you count the final two seasons under Pulis (perhaps even longer considering he brought in Crouch and Palacios as two of his last big signings weakening the squad in doing so) plus the Hughes era we have a very long stagnation and rotting period to overhaul. That's a good point about no one wanting to spend big on our better players and I think some of this stems from the image we cultivated under Pulis (which we still carry some residue of today). Nzonzi went to Sevilla for a relative pittance when we were still established (we'd have got more for him if he moved to another PL team); Shaqiri we HAD to sell low to Liverpool due to the clause in his contract; Arnie went to West Ham rather than a big club. Because Brighton now and Southampton a few years ago (under Poch/Koeman) don't have that stigma over their style of play, their players are deemed more desirable by the bigger clubs.

Lol. The owners should be questioned as to how they allowed the club to continue to decline. However, Brighton and Brentford will both be down in the next 5 or so years. I couldn’t care less if they stay up or down. However, they will go down at some point in the near future. They all do. I mentioned that our continued decline is a problem of the owners. We are the size of club that should really be sitting around top half of this league or bottom half of the Premier. We are drastically underachieving.

I am almost certain that they wouldn't have the same financial clout as the Coates family. Or willingness to pour money in hand over fist. if the Coates leave we will never see the premier league again. We need their money, but spent wisely. If you know your history- more trips to tier 3 than tier 1 under the Family (and we're more likely to drop again than go up as it stands). It's not like we've been habitual play off contenders in this division under them either, other than the promotion season, the mid 90s appearance under Lou (which, let's be honest, was a shock) and the one where we tailed off under Pulis we've been midtable fodder at best (with more relegation dogfights than genuine tilts at promotion). Just saying...

Nzonzi went for £8m which for a player with a year on his contract at that time was the going rate The following summer the market shot up, had we been in the same position he would would have got a lot more We could not have sold him and allowed him to run his contract down The idea that Nzonzi would have accepted that knuckled down and put in 100% is preposterous. Apreciate with other players they would but we already seen him sulk under two different managers The issue, which we saw over and over again in Hughes later seasons was the complete failure in replacing him We signed Van Ginkel who was very limited and then Imbula who was talented but an absolute waster

A lot of that support (Not all before the genuine feel insulted) let’s face it only went because it’s Blackpool away and a chance to go on the piss. So I guess a lot were. Well. Pissed. And frustrated. With reason but let’s face it what’s the point. Surely they know how we’ve been playing and that’s as Stoke as it gets !

I can’t wait for when, if by some miracle we win a game at home, and they cup their ears or whatever the fuck they do to give it back to the fans. Personally I don’t think they will be far from someone running on the pitch and lamping them one they are that far up their own arses and detached from the fans. Personally, I don't think it's long before some fans get the same I don't think a player is likely to run into the crowd and lamp a fan... they'd probably fucking miss anyway

I genuinely feel that I am more likely to see Stoke play on League One than the Premier League.

For what it's worth I would like to add my observations having read this thread during the evening. I didn't go to the match and admire those who go away because it is all so predictable. We can't string two results together even when we play the same team so having won midweek we were going to lose today. Concede an early goal especially away and the result will be 1-0. How anyone can derive enough pleasure from that position to travel to away matches I have no idea. Up until recently I thought it was because the atmosphere and support seemed to be better than at home. But the worm seems to have turned on that one recently yet fans still go in numbers. In my opinion it is not the effort of the players which is lacking particularly or a lack of skill compared to other championship players but a total lack of confidence and in many ways they share my trepidation listed above going into a match. It isa total lack of belief in themselves, their teammates and the tactics. I can understand the wish for those players to all leave. There isn't one that I feel at all proud of having in my team bar perhaps Jagielka and not including the academy players. However they are the players we need to keep us up. Abuse them and we are very likely to get even less, afraid to draw personal criticism they will hide even more than they do at the moment. The biggest statement we have made is not turning up against Huddersfield. Earlybird season tickets have usually been announced by now so obviously the board are worried. Not turning up sends a powerful message without impacting on the players too much. I'm sure they would rather play to silence than abuse. Finally I am extremely worried about the personal abuse it seems players were getting today. I wasn't there but if I understand correctly it was insulting and probably overstepped the boundaries of acceptable language. I sincerely hope it didn't include homophobic or racist slurs as the last thing the club needs is a charge resulting from this sort of language from fans. It amazes me that Laurent was the main victim as he seems to be about the only player I can think of who is remotely playing better for Neil than he was for MON. and I have noticed at home games that the two seem to have a rapport (Wasn't he made captain one match when neither Baker nor Jagielka played?) and often talk together after the match. He certainly doesn't lack effort. Footballers tend to socialise with players of other clubs who live close by ie Cheshire. We are hoping for a real spend on the squad this summer (my personal hope is not by Alex Neil but that is a different matter) If fans get a reputation for not supporting players but insulting them it makes recruitment far more difficult. Given the choice of joining Stoke or a club like Derby, Birmingham, either Sheffield club, West Brom, Leeds if they come down, Coventry I could go on, where there is a very partisan support who would you choose all other things being equal. Our fan base used to be one of the things new recruits referenced as a reason for joining the club and wanting to play at the ground. Boo at the end by all means, don't go to games, vent your feelings to the team as a whole but please don't insult individuals especially when, as it seems to have been today, it is individuals who do not deserve to be singled out. The reason people go to away games is not that they are fans, it is because they are supporters and that is a massive difference. I respect those who can't go because of personal circumstances. By the way, did you go to the Huddersfield game?

Like some one above said, we need their money just some to spend it wisely.

It's interesting perspectives on Saturday's match. I got talking to some Blackpool fans yesterday. They thought Stoke were a good side, with some very decent wingers. They thought they were very lucky to win and it was "like the Alamo" trying to keep us out. Albeit hugely disappointing Saturday, the stats don't lie either 25 shots to 7, 6 on target to just 1 (the goal). If we can just convert these stats to something meaningful we'll be in good shape. All in all the players didn't deserve the abuse they get, especially as they've done most of the hard yards and couldn't get the result across the line. I admit we didn't see any form of improvement Saturday, but it's not as bad as some people are suggesting. Teams ARE going to fight for their Champs existence right now, we need to apply the same amount of pressure and we will get the results, the stats don't lie.

No great surprises ..a full turnout with the added Blackpool ingredient.. a derelict victorian seaside town closed for the winter, sand , sea , wind , and rain mixed with copious amounts of drink and lemo for some , with the added spice of defeat to relegation rivals thrown into the mix .. what could possibly go wrong
Experience has taught me such fixtures are seldom enjoyable experiences .. and so it proved
The abuse was OTT , mob mentality that someone dare spoil their day .. but not overly surprising … the day for many was pockets of fans who even at nil nil we’re taking glee in singing their two favourite ditties ‘when Stoke go down’ and ‘we’re all going on a league 1 tour ‘ ..gallows humour possibly , but hardly designed to inspire the team or unite the fans
The lack of trains from Preston possibly prevented things from becoming very messy .. OTT and abhorrent some peoples reaction was , but 77/8 it wasn’t
Onto Swansea ..another coastal town so surely another 3500 turnout ..perhaps not

That's back to Mick Mill's days for clarity. "When Stoke go down" is the worst I've ever heard it's an appalling song, sung with the wrong words and is just basically shit. I wish we'd stop singing it I really do.

I travel from Nottingham via Leicester (to pick up my 87 year old mum) to almost every home game, have supported them since the 70s, so think I have as much right as anyone to make comments even if I don't go to away games - partly because, I will say, that as a woman the behaviour of some Stoke fans at away games made it an unpleasant experience. I even have tried sitting amongst the home fans when Stoke played at places like Derby or Forest in preference to risking being surrounded by people I found intimidating. Sorry if that offends you, just expressing my opinion which has some relevance to the thread title.

I was disgusted with a lot of the people around me who basically were toxic from the get go. One individual in front of me was giving some abuse to Sterling and Brown as well as the steward stood near their area. He was boorish, drunk and totally behaving like a prized tit. I was glad to get out of the ground and away from the baying idiots at full time to the sanctuary of the coach. As a woman, it was the most uncomfortable away game I’ve been to and I went to Blackpool last season when it was totally different with a smaller number of fans present. The stupid “We all go down” song does my head in. It’s almost as if they want the negative mentality to continue and then they have the audacity to boo and bay at the end of the game. There were even young male fans fighting before kick off. I wouldn’t be going back in a hurry at the moment when it’s just so toxic.

Lol. The owners should be questioned as to how they allowed the club to continue to decline. However, Brighton and Brentford will both be down in the next 5 or so years. One of them probably won’t go back up for some time. It’s football, unless you are Man City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Man Utd, Arsenal, Tottenham (or now Newcastle), you are one bad season from the drop. Just look at West Ham. They’ve been pushing for Europe for years. Now they are fighting for survival. I take the point that football ebbs and flows, but we have not finished in the top half of this division since relegation. That is despite having the overwhelming advantage of having three years of parachute payments (which we wasted). In fact, we spent the money so poorly that we hamstrung ourself with FFP. There is a chance that we will be playing in League One next season (I think we will be ok, but based on how poor the likes of Wigan, Huddersfield and Blackpool are rather than our own ability). We are now looking at 7 consecutive seasons of consistently poor results and I do not see that changing any time soon. Why not? We have finally got rid of the last of the overpaid players on long contracts. We are now on a level playing pitch again, so things should actually improve. When we came down our cost base was unsupportable, so we gambled what money we had in a vain attempt to get us back up. We have an annual income in the low 20 millions. MON had to cut spending by £28 million in one year alone. I don't know any other manager who could have us 2nd and 5th at times in different seasons under those conditions but I'm sure lots of people on here do. They could probably even do better themselves.

True fans is an abbreviation of fanatics, but fans is not really used in that context anymore. To me, and it is only my thinking, fans put posters on walls and watch on TV, and there is nothing wrong with that but supporters get out there and support their team, in all weather's, they support the club financially, they support through thick and thin, and are part of a community.

I kind of agree but think you’ve got your words wrong fans is short for fanatics they’d definitely go away too. Supporters can be defined by anyone who lends their support buying tickets merchandise and can’t be restricted to someone who gives verbal encouragement. So really you’ve got fanatics and spectators who lend support in some form. I’m definitely the latter it’s nothing to be ashamed of fanatics in any sphere generally scare and confuse normal people. Many people have their own definition of what it means to be a real supporter. The noisy element think it’s only them. Anyone who puts money into the club will do for me but I suppose that reflects my own support. I attend home games whenever possible and in buying a ST pay for the ones I don’t to maintain my seat with my family and definitely wouldn’t identify as a fanatic, I leave that to the “ultras” tribal chanting just isn’t for me.

Toxic wasteland you say? Have you ever wondered what some of the contributing factors to that atmosphere might be, Bayern? Look up the word supporter… People clapped the relegation side off. Happy clapping and putting up with this shit is the only issue with the fanbase. Who’s happily clapping? I’m at least as ticked off as the next man when I part with hard earned cash to watch what’s on show. Anyone who thinks that verbally abusing and bullying players is going to have a positive impact on them isn’t particularly bright though, Bayern.

Who thinks it will have a positive impact? You say they deserve everything they get… They do yeah. I don’t think anyone has mentioned it leading to anything positive though. I don’t think they care enough for it to make them feel guilty and get better.

I hear you loud & clear.
