Support is getting behind your team when they are at there lowest. I don’t know of a single person who is motivated by constant criticism. Neither do I but then I don't know anyone who gets paid thousands of pounds a week for about four hours work The money makes little difference, it is just part of the competition to get, supposedly, the best. It's artificial.

I’ve no problem with fans unhappy at our decline and they are rightfully furious What they fail to grasp is separating that from personal and hateful abuse to individuals If they can’t separate the two then I sympathise and feel embarrassed for them

I am almost certain that they wouldn't have the same financial clout as the Coates family. Or willingness to pour money in hand over fist. Well the owners of Brighton and Brentford don't need the money the Coates Family have do they? What they have is a knowledge of how to run progressive football clubs in the modern era- and not clubs blessed with a huge top flight pedigree either. That trumps free coach travel to Fleetwood Bingo! This is the truth of it, even if some fans do not want to admit it. If anybody else had overseen the failures that our current owners have over the last 6/7 years then our fanbase would be furious.

For what it's worth I would like to add my observations having read this thread during the evening. I didn't go to the match and admire those who go away because it is all so predictable. We can't string two results together even when we play the same team so having won midweek we were going to lose today. Concede an early goal especially away and the result will be 1-0. How anyone can derive enough pleasure from that position to travel to away matches I have no idea. Up until recently I thought it was because the atmosphere and support seemed to be better than at home. But the worm seems to have turned on that one recently yet fans still go in numbers.
In my opinion it is not the effort of the players which is lacking particularly or a lack of skill compared to other championship players but a total lack of confidence and in many ways they share my trepidation listed above going into a match. It isa total lack of belief in themselves, their teammates and the tactics.
I can understand the wish for those players to all leave. There isn't one that I feel at all proud of having in my team bar perhaps Jagielka and not including the academy players. However they are the players we need to keep us up. Abuse them and we are very likely to get even less, afraid to draw personal criticism they will hide even more than they do at the moment.
The biggest statement we have made is not turning up against Huddersfield. Earlybird season tickets have usually been announced by now so obviously the board are worried. Not turning up sends a powerful message without impacting on the players too much. I'm sure they would rather play to silence than abuse.
Finally I am extremely worried about the personal abuse it seems players were getting today. I wasn't there but if I understand correctly it was insulting and probably overstepped the boundaries of acceptable language. I sincerely hope it didn't include homophobic or racist slurs as the last thing the club needs is a charge resulting from this sort of language from fans. It amazes me that Laurent was the main victim as he seems to be about the only player I can think of who is remotely playing better for Neil than he was for MON. and I have noticed at home games that the two seem to have a rapport (Wasn't he made captain one match when neither Baker nor Jagielka played?) and often talk together after the match. He certainly doesn't lack effort.
Footballers tend to socialise with players of other clubs who live close by ie Cheshire. We are hoping for a real spend on the squad this summer (my personal hope is not by Alex Neil but that is a different matter) If fans get a reputation for not supporting players but insulting them it makes recruitment far more difficult. Given the choice of joining Stoke or a club like Derby, Birmingham, either Sheffield club, West Brom, Leeds if they come down, Coventry I could go on, where there is a very partisan support who would you choose all other things being equal. Our fan base used to be one of the things new recruits referenced as a reason for joining the club and wanting to play at the ground.
Boo at the end by all means, don't go to games, vent your feelings to the team as a whole but please don't insult individuals especially when, as it seems to have been today, it is individuals who do not deserve to be singled out.

One of them probably won’t go back up for some time. It’s football, unless you are Man City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Man Utd, Arsenal, Tottenham (or now Newcastle), you are one bad season from the drop. Just look at West Ham. They’ve been pushing for Europe for years. Now they are fighting for survival.

I went yesterday with my 2 sons and 8 year old grandson. We guessed what sort of day that it was going to be when we called at Charnock Richard services on the M6. There was a coach and a mini bus parked on there, the lads (I won't call them supporters, you can make your own minds up?) were P**sing up against trees, posts and in some cases just p**sing in the wind and this was at 10.15! If I can fast forward to the end of the game as we were leaving, we witnessed some of the abuse directed at the goalkeeper who was visibly surprised/shaken by it. It was not racist or homophobic ... it was just vile. C**t, useless c**t F**k off, that sort of stuff. The individuals who were dishing it out and there were about 10/12 of them were completely off their faces. In my honest opinion, none of us are happy with the current situation and certain players are not good enough for this level of football. However yesterday was about the front three who on that performance would not have scored in a brothel! One of them runs himself into the ground but isn't good enough, one is extremely talented but bone idle and won't go into a challenge and the third is finished. If a couple of those chances had gone in, no matter how bad the performance the abuse at the end would not have been dished out and this thread would not exist.

I take the point that football ebbs and flows, but we have not finished in the top half of this division since relegation. That is despite having the overwhelming advantage of having three years of parachute payments (which we wasted). In fact, we spent the money so poorly that we hamstrung ourself with FFP. There is a chance that we will be playing in League One next season (I think we will be ok, but based on how poor the likes of Wigan, Huddersfield and Blackpool are rather than our own ability). We are now looking at 7 consecutive seasons of consistently poor results and I do not see that changing any time soon.

It was one of those adternoons where trouble wasn't far away But I agree with you, we were dominant but goals change people's views, Gayle should have bagged that easy chance then it would have been a canter

We haven’t scored enough of them in any season since we got promoted but the same people are only too willing to accept that. 10 seasons in the Prem never broke 50 goals in a season. Goal scoring is a perennial problem of ours.

I have always thought players coming over to the crowd at the end, like MOM awards, when we lose is very risky. I know it's supposed to show appreciation but I don't think it does if the team have lost. It's almost saying you cheered us on but it made no difference. In my opinion a losing team should congratulate the opposition, thank the officials and make a quick exit except in exceptional circumstances eg the cup final.
I always noticed that whatever the result Bojan disappeared as soon as the formalities were over and no one thought the worst of him for that. If they do choose to come over to the crowd after results like yesterday's I think they should expect, deserved or not, abuse and criticism and need to have a thick skin. It sounds as if it overstepped the boundaries yesterday and if it is team policy that players must go over then I think that should be abandoned and the decision be a personal one for the player's to make.

I'm as pissed off as everyone, but booing and abusing cannot help Wilmot was getting stick too, unsure what he did wrong today, a few over hit passes but nothing unusual A few over hit passes the only time he finds a Stoke shirt is if he does what he's good at , sideways, sideways back back ,sideways.

Maybe documentary-worthy. We could call it "What's All The Fuss About?!" I wouldn't watch it. Too much Stoke City is bad for your health. That said, you could probably argue that despite Sunderland's spectacular fall from the PL and into League One, they've managed to recover well, and now sit in a healthier position than we do. So maybe a question for the stattos...how many clubs have managed a worse 'average position' post PL relegation, than we have??

Your comment about Brentford and Brighton is wishful thinking but not based on anything- Bournemouth are a similar sized club to Brentford but bounced back a lot better than we have (albeit not straight away) I think the reason they were able to bounce back as with other clubs who do was that they had saleable assets both during their time in the Premier and once they got relegated - Ake, Wilson amongst others who I can't remember and can't be bothered to look up. Hence no problem with FFP. We had an ageing squad full of players nobody wanted to spend big on. I can't remember us ever having a player that interested the big spenders. In my opinion the blame for that originates with Pulis who once we were established never but a young player to develop and insisted on ageing crocks. I personally think that he would have struggled to rebuild his squad once the likes of Huth, Shawcross, Whelan, Walters and Crouch needed replacing. Hughes tried to reduce the age but failed to replace the backbone and apart from Arnautovic didn't develop players to sell on. Rowett likewise didn't bring in young players. We have tried to transition to that sort of squad but as long as we had high earning ageing players it was going to be a struggle. If you count the final two seasons under Pulis (perhaps even longer considering he brought in Crouch and Palacios as two of his last big signings weakening the squad in doing so) plus the Hughes era we have a very long stagnation and rotting period to overhaul.

Why are we comparing ourselves to Brentford and Brighton? We are light years behind them in hoe the club is set up and operates.
Even if they go down they have tried and trusted systems in place to ensure that change is seamless, especially in recruitment and infrastructure.
Us? We simply threw shit at a wall and nothing stuck. That's why we are the ONLY relegated club since 2018 not to make the top six. It's embarrassing.
