Stoke City - “ the most difficult football team to manage in football with what goes on behind the scenes” a quote from mad Nath this morning. This mirrors previous quotes from the Wigan manager a few years back who stated “everybody in football knows what goes on at Stoke and how difficult it is to manage”
We all obviously have our opinion regarding the club, a mixture of:
- lack of forward thinking by the owners - lack of structure - previous impact of Scholes - lack of culture
However, is there something else in the under current that we as mere fans have missed but is widely known by those Inside football. Intriguing comments, maybe one for the fans council to ask for a response on?

It's nonsense in my opinion. We're a great club to be the manager of, just because we're in a tough period doesn't means it's not an attractive proposition.
Unless Scholes was holding a gun to Jones' head and telling him to sign Stephen Ward, Sam Vokes, Jordan Cousins and the like I'd suggest he's wrong.........

Nonsense. I took them from the championship to Europa League glory in 4 seasons then followed it up with a league cup, league title and fa/champions league runners up medals the next season. Just need myself and bayernoatcake at the helm.

We're in a rut - that much is clear - but the danger is we get carried away by our current situation.
We're a few months away from a clean bill of health from FFP (allegedly), that guarantees nothing of course but as long as we can see out this season with no dramas hopefully showing signs of progress in the meantime we'll be in a decent spot for next season. There's plenty of clubs who would love our owners, our infrastructure, potential fanbase and future potential...........

It's simple to write off Nathan as deluded but something is going wrong somewhere. With regards to Pulis that was when Peter was in charge not John. Since he took the helm things do appear to have gone downhill. It may well be an unfortunate coincidence or it may not. I am not in the know but just a sad fan of many years who is observing the club decline.

As we agree we can ignore Nathan, where do you see the problem? I think the board and the structure are a massive issue. But I think the manager has too much control. A good manager would get us winning as it’s their ship to sale. I don’t think it should be that way.

"If I improve my win ratio in the Premier League, I'm sure the criticism will stop." "improve my win ratio" he's lost every game

I think you have to take what Nathan Jones says with a pinch of salt.
However, the last decade or so has seen constant decline and a string of managers failing to turn our fortunes around.

A good manager would get us winning as it’s their ship to sale. I don’t think it should be that way. Peter Coates himself said that he believes once you have your manager in place you let him ‘run the football club’ or words to that effect. On one hand that’s amazing to be given such free reign but modern football dictates that the manager is the coach and he does need a support structure around him. The problem with SCFC is that whenever a manager leaves the club he takes the ‘infrastructure’ with him. Every other club takes their manager in and out like a chess piece or a Lego man and slots the new guy into an already existing structure therefore causing less trauma to the club. Stoke need to get the best people in place to create a structure, ethos and right way of doing things that any manager can slot in to and thrive - until we do that we are doomed to the hit and hope approach that we’ve been punting on since Hughes sacking

Proper businesses have "succession planning" but that never seems to be the case in football, especially at Stoke. England tried it, but only in a half hearted way, before they gave the job to McClaren...that went well Watford sort of do it with their 'model' but even that seems a bit hit and miss. Clearly it isn't easy to 'manage' a football club, but a bit of consistency, in the planning department, would surely help? Having an 'identity' and recruiting (managers, coaches and players) accordingly would give some stability and put an end to all the chopping and changing of players each time a new boss is appointed

Hughes commented that he would have a weekly meeet with Peter and John Coates, and the 1 question Hughes was always asked was " What do you need? If that's shit control of a club then christ knows what's good.. We got Billionaire local fans running the club who want to bring success and willing to pay to get it. Ask any other club if they would settle for that....
