When AN first came in he gave interviews that made it sound as if we were right up to our limit and even likely to breach if we didn’t shed some costs or bring some money in during the remainder of the season. I don’t see why anyone would expect that situation to have improved significantly. Hence the reason why we’ll probably let Souttar go for half his worth. We simply need the money to do any real business. He’s worth what a buyer is willing to pay. If the best offer we get is £15M I doubt very much we’ll be saying you’re ok we’ll take £7.5M. January is normally a time of inflated prices for players of importance to the selling team. I doubt any club who comes in with an offer will come back with more in the Summer.

It would be underwhelming. He can't even get into his own team. Like Mark Stein you mean?

My concern with Bentley is that he appears to predominantly a shot stopper and we are crying out for a keeper that commands his area.

We need to do something about our loan situation then. We’ve already got 6, of which only 5 can be in the match day squad. I have a feeling this might happen. Bentley permanent (contract take over) Iverson loan Bursik sold Which as far as I’m concerned is an enormous improvement, I think it’s pretty clear AN isn’t impressed with either keeper. Although Bonham has been ‘passable’ since he’s come back into the team. Iverson on loan seems pointless if we got Bentley in, at least this season anyway. It only takes an injury to either and we’d be back to Bonham, which as we’ve found out already isn’t the answer. Bentley has clearly fallen out of favour due to a personality clash, and would possible swap no2 for no2 if he got a fair crack at competing for no1, which it doesn’t sound like he’s getting currently. And I’d imagine we’d be able to at least match his current salary which will have been a pre covid deal.

Let’s hope he’s firing on all cylinders if he arrives. Ive heard they’re signing Royce from Leighton as goalkeeping coach

Going off that alone.... I'd take him!!!

Good signing in my opinion. Can't be worse than what we've got and thus if it's an improvement in the gk position then can only be good.

My concern with Bentley is that he appears to predominantly a shot stopper and we are crying out for a keeper that commands his area. What does “commanding your area” mean… shouting at your defenders to do what they should know what to do already? If defenders are doing their job, then the goalkeeper’s task should be to only stop shots going into our goal… which Bentley does very well! And his distribution is pretty good too btw.

The likes of Shay Given made a career from never coming off their lane so if you know your keeper is going to stay put the defence is clear they need to head the ball. If he's saves a higher percentage of shots than the current two, is decent with the ball at his feet and is an organiser and a leader he'll be just fine..........

He can’t be any worse than Bursik or Bonham surely.
If we can’t get Iverson then it’s a bit of a no brainer to loan him and effectively take over the remainder of his contract.

If we bring in a goalkeeper, that’s a role for Bonham. It’s the role he should have always had and the role he would have had if Bursik wasn’t so pants. I’d not worry about the number of loans, Sterling and Kilkenny are both never fit, so it’s like having two free slots there anyways.

I'd be surprised if we had the money for both or be willing to spend it on to keepers if we did, there's too many problems with the rest of the squad. I doubt Bentley sees himself as a number two in this league and could easily sit until the summer and wait until someone comes along giving him a No1 spot, I don't see why he'd bother coming to us with what you propose, seems pretty unrealistic tbh. Personally I think Bonham would be fine as a no 2.

Obviously he's not a thrilling signing BUT if he has been their captain hopefully that means he is a good character.
All we need is for him to plug a hole until the summer really.
Was hoping for better but when your budget is £0 then any improvement has to be welcomed.

the following year he was player of the season
very hard to tell from you tube but there are 3 or 4 keeper cam videos of him on you tube. He seems a lot more vociferous than bursik and bonham , lots of shouting at his defenders
wouldn't mind a voice at the back
might be good for us .

My concern with Bentley is that he appears to predominantly a shot stopper and we are crying out for a keeper that commands his area. I’d describe him as the opposite of that. He’s an Ederson type keeper. Very good/confident with the ball at his feet, aggressive starting positions and very much your modern day keeper. He’s also a “character”. Re Bonham - he played 2nd fiddle to Bentley when they were both at Southend and at that time, Bentley was very much a rookie keeper having started life as a midfielder in non league football I believe. Arsenal took Bentley in to their academy having seen him in his very first game as a goalkeeper can you believe?

We simply need the money to do any real business. What's the point in doing any real business now though ? Unless you feel we're in big danger of getting relegated we've got no chance of suddenly pushing for the play offs so it would be better to hobble through to the summer when we can do serious business without even needing to sell Souttar.

People say Pickford is great with his feet but I think his ability in that regard is overrated. People rate Ederson who is fantastic with his feet but he also seems to save very little outside of 1v1s. I think he’s a bit of a fraud!

You could stick a pile of steaming Rottweiler shit inbetween the sticks, bang a pair of goalie gloves on it and it would be an upgrade on Bonham and Bursik.
So signing an actual human being will be an upgrade no doubt.
