If Delap actually had a midfield behind him it would help massively. He’s learning and young, how about directing annoyance towards Baker, Smallbone, Thompson etc The strikers are getting service though. We average 4.2 shots per game. Top Burnley average 4.6, scoring 52 goals, We’ve scored 28… I’d argue the issue is poor finishing from not the midfielders, but the strikers. Suppose it’s a bit more complex than that… depends where those shots are from. If Burnley’s average is from shots in the 18yd box, vs ours being long range hopeful shots, then it tells a very different story. We do seem to have missed some glaring chances though.

Exactly, I can see him shining next season and hopefully that is with us. We'd have to be favourites to get him on loan again as we are giving him plenty of playing time and we are his preferred option aswell. It might depend on what division we are playing in! 😂 It would be interesting to know what Manchester City think about how his season has gone so far. He has struggled a little with that jump from u23 (or is it u21?) football into the mad, bad world of the professional game. He will be better for his season with us, but I sense that some other club will be getting the benefit next year rather than us ... Yes that is the worry that we don't get him next year and then he goes to some other club in our league and bangs them in, would be typical Stoke if that happened to be honest. Can see Man city being happy to loan him back to us though as we are giving him games and persisting with him which other clubs may not have done as he hasn't exactly hit the heights some were expecting him to.

Half of the ‘problem’ with Delap was the level of expectation we placed on him. Not many 19 year old forwards with little first team experience come down and set things on fire in the Champ. Remind me how Kane got on at Millwall and Norwich!?

Remind me how Kane got on at Millwall and Norwich!? 1 in 3 at Millwall (27 games, 9 goals) and I’m not sure how many of them were sub appearances, that’s not too bad a record to be fair and much better than we’re seeing from Delap. Norwich was only 3 games. According to wiki.

Kane is one of the best strikers in the world - fair to say he didn’t rip up the Champ at 19/20/21, so what should we be expecting from Delap? For me he’s been a little disappointing but he gets in good positions and is improving, so close to on par

He is on loan at Joey bartons Bristol rovers and has hit 9 in 15 games for them this season. He had a bit of slow start but is banging them in now and nominated for league one player of the month.

To be fair to Delap , he might not have the greatest coaches around him at Stoke .
Maybe it would have been better for the lad , if he had a chat with Harry souttar and Connor Taylor, rather than his dad , and gone off on loan to play for Joey Barton.

I think the goals he scored against Cardiff and Bristol City showed he is capable of making something out of the unlikely. Not only that, but in his past couple of games I’ve noted him dominating aerially as well. He is definitely improving, and if we can add a decent winger (at least on the left) who can make more chances then I’m sure Liam’s goal return will improve as the season progresses.

I like how he has started to spin off his marker and run with the ball. Like so many young players his end product needs to be brushed up on. Time on the pitch helps. Nobody could argue he hasn’t been given a chance. Played 22, started 14, 3 goals. I really hope he finds some form and soon, otherwise he’ll no doubt get dropped, he can’t continue to play if he isn’t contributing. Correct, we're struggling and we need a better contribution from our players. No room for sentiment

If our ambition is to labour at the bottom end of the league, then Delap is good enough. If not, then we should have not bothered with bringing him in.

Remind me how Kane got on at Millwall and Norwich!? Absolutely. It was ridiculous and I was shot down at the time for saying he’ll need the right service and that it’s a lot to ask of an inexperienced lad. Not a ‘told you so’ btw but it shows that the step up from youth football is biiiiig. Same as Tezgel, stop the hype train and let these lads develop, if he comes good then I’ll be as chuffed as anyone but it’s the experienced pros who should be under the pressure, not youngsters.

Don't think he's awful, but basically the only beneficiaries of this loan are the player himself (to a point) and Manchester City. We're getting nothing from this, and should never have signed him. It was an emotional transfer to try and appease fans.

Could easily end up alongside another ex-MCFC starlet Ryan Corrigan playing against the likes of Kidsgrove and Newcastle Town if he doesn't buck his ideas up. He's got time to develop yet I suppose.

Most teams (especially at the top) don't shoot from outside the box often these days because the percentage chance of scoring is much lower compared to closer range. One example of data making the game less exciting.

It was an emotional transfer to try and appease fans. This is about right. Delap is getting experience and Man City are getting one of their youngsters played on a weekly basis. We have not got a great deal out of this so far (although hopefully that will change ...).

We've been unable to score an above average ammount of goals for the standard we've played at for an age. People make all sorts of bollox excuses for it but the bottom line is the owners continually recruit dour managers who focus far too sharply on not conceding goals and not sharply enough on scoring them.

Basically a less disastrous Jese Don't think there are any similarities apart from the fact that it wasn't difficult to predict the outcome of each deal. In Jese's case because he was clearly a bit of a cock who had let outside influences take priority over football and Liam because he'd played virtually no men's football and such players are extremely rarely an instant success, even the very best.
