I was talking about the Italy game mate, midfield was overrun and their defenders had our forwards in their pockets. Defensively we looked ponderous. It was shite Ish We weren't completely outplayed though 1 0 was about right I thought 0. 0 wouldn't have been unfair either though Thought Italy were 7/10 and we were 6/10 England do need freshening up, we have good players, but let's see what happens in the World Cup, tournaments can develop in unexpected ways I still think the tournament is wide ooen, not one genuinely top side Maybe someone will turn into a dominant side but I think there could be more 'shocks' than usual not much between the traditional 'average' nations and the traditional big hitters The first round of group matches in particular could be more interesting than usual Who do we play first USA? Or Iran? USA have had better sides than they do now but obviously pressure on England Ww Certainly are in worse shape atm than we were going into last summer Iran first at 1pm on the second day of the tournament I think. I get your logic but sometimes you can just tell when a team has gone stale and I could count the number of good performances under Southgate on one hand. And no I haven’t got six fingers😉

That's an argument Which attacking manager could we get, right now? Timing is terrible After the World Cup then we can go for someone but have to be a non English man Potter would have been my shout but he's not going to be available in January That's the problem isn't it. Who can we realistically get who would be up to the job? You look at the new manager odds and there's not too many inspiring choices on there. Potter would have been great, but I don't know if he would even want it at this stage in his career. If we went down the non Englishman route I would be more than happy with Rodgers, and I think he's a realistic target. Achievable yes but as at Liverpool he's shown to be a flawed flaky manager He might be a good boost for a year or so as he would definitely attack more but after that, can't see it Would Pochetino take it?

Fair point re getting to the final, but the records book will say England = Runners up. To be fair the record books show that's the best we have ever done in the Euros I’d love to know foreign fans opinions on our team like when you can go on other clubs message boards.

I don’t think he’s flakey and flawed at all, most of his issues have revolves around not being backed in the transfer market. I believe with a ready made squad of quality footballers he’s one of the best coaches going

That's true. Although if we did replace Southgate with him now, would that boost work at the WC? Probably not but you never know. Excellent question. I'd like to think he would. We have a decent group of young players so I think he'd be able to see how he could turn them into tournament winners. Might be wishful thinking on my part though.

Foreign fans I don't know but foreign journalists rate England more than many English fans We have a good team Stick a top centre back and ideally a better keeper and would be banging the drum big time As it is I think when we play well (ages now) we look good but we don't look like winning when we play badly and really good teams do I guess that's why Argentina are favourites as despite not being all that special they still win France probably have the best squad but they look like England atm, cert beatable

That's a very hardline thought process and could be said of numerous managers across scores of international teams. Success should not be only judged by all or nothing, hero-zero, criteria. Getting to a final is an achievement even if a team doesn't ultimately win as far as I'm concerned. I have no issue with him being replaced whenever the time comes tbh. Fair point re getting to the final, but the records book will say England = Runners up. Yep.. winners would've clearly been better but I enjoyed the journey none the less, even if the final itself was a disappointment. I never expected us to get that far tbh

It has been poor, I didn't see most of the Italy game admittedly. Did they dominate us? Hungary games I am inclined to forgive given the ridiculous timing of them. Also, is this tournament meaningless or not? If it is, then people need to lay off Southgate given they're essentially friendlies and WC warm-up matches. If it's not, then it's doing its job and serving its function as a more competitive international tournament. It’s certainly not meaningless as relegation means we no longer play against the leading nations and pitting our wits unless it’s at a major tournament Our next Nations League group could conceivably see us drawn in a group with Georgia, Albania and Slovenia. We'd walk the group, but it would hardly be a test for us over six games. Add in the next European Championship qualifiers, which will see us drawn against another three minnow nations and it means that after the World Cup we're really not going to be tested competitively for eighteen months.

Actually, I've just read that the Euro 24 pots are based on finishing positions in the Nations League so it seems we'll come up against a major nation, ie Belgium, Holland, Portugal, Spain and possibly somebody slippery like Poland, Sweden or Croatia plus two minnow nations.

It was imperative we didn’t get relegated for that reason alone The nations league certainly isn’t a glorified friendly thing it’s actually a fantastic invention but sadly we’ve fell on our arse in it

When we come up against superior nations who actually win tournaments, 9 times out of 10 we lose. We're just not as good as some people may think.

I have to disagree with that mate. I love watching England (men and women) and although I've only been away with England men once (Copenhagen) it's one of my favourite footie memories. Having watched the Women's Euros this summer and seen the difference an England manager who isn't afraid to attack and is brave enough to make changes to turn a game around makes, I don't see how it's possible to keep Southgate any longer. I like the bloke, we just won't actually win anything with him in charge. That's an argument Which attacking manager could we get, right now? Timing is terrible After the World Cup then we can go for someone but have to be a non English man Potter would have been my shout but he's not going to be available in January Possibly give the England Women's Coach a go of it whenever Southgate is gone?

When we come up against superior nations who actually win tournaments, 9 times out of 10 we lose. We're just not as good as some people may think. Why do you think that there are so many foreign footballers, managers & coaches plying their trades in English and Scottish football ? From their first encounter with a football they are taught that the ball is their friend, they are encouraged to express skills, stamina and tactical training can wait until they are older, let them enjoy the game. Just look at England, and remember that these players are the cream of English football, they respond to a incoming pass as if the ball was a live hand grenade their first thought process is to get it away from me ! Even the one thing that we are renowned for, Stamina was lacking ! We are strangled by preset tactical formations and have no flexibility. How many times have you genuinely witnessed a inspirational performance by England ? A performance of skill and flowing football instead of workmanlike victories by the odd goal from a corner or a penalty, instead we laud heroic defeats like Brazil 1 v England 0, Penalty shootout failure to Germany, Argentina & Portugal. We might have the most visually exiting league in world football but I’m afraid that we are still light years behind our friends from the European or South American continents.

Alexander-Arnold, Grealish (suspended), Tomori, Ward-Prowse and Bowen not in the squad.
Certainly seems to be trending towards TAA being left out of the World Cup squad
The exclusion of Tomori seems hard to fathom.

Is it fair to say he has an issue with players who don't play in the Premier League? It's a strange one. I'd like to know when he thinks Coady will get on the pitch following Dier's re-emergence as a specialist middle of a back 3 player He seems to be in the squad as some kind of holiday camp entertainer figure, despite him being pretty poor.

Tomori such a better, more flexible option than Coady. And he is much better than Maguire I think Southgate is simply prioritising defenders who are good on the ball, Tomori is a diligent fast defender (all good!) but not as good on the ball (not a donkey though) Maguire is England's best CB <irrespective of how bad he is for The Shit> Stones next personally I'd have Tomori in the squad

Or put another way, our qualification for Euro 24 is now seriously in doubt. I wonder if the players even knew this was going to be their reward for their half-arsed performances in the Nations League? Does Harry Kane realise he may never get another crack at the Euro finals?

Leaving Tomori out of the squad is bizarre, nothing to play for and last game before the World Cup. Talk about closing down your options. Far to loyal to underperforming players, and let’s face it Maguire has been underperforming for at least 18 months.
