Football is strange a bloke gets the sack because he's crap at his job and he's thanked. I’m thinking along the same lines, bizarre. It’s a bit thanking Etobo for his service or thanking Bursik for his impeccable performance on Saturday. It’s not though is it, it’s more like thanking (let’s say) Salif Diao or Lawrence, who were both good for us for a period but then found themselves not quite up to the standard. MON rescued us from relegation and had us performing really well for the best part of a year, what is it you don’t understand

I don't think anyone is suggesting he's a modern Dario Gradi. They're just giving credit where credits due. Can't say I remember Collins being dropped aside from when injured. Forrester was one that got away but he had a terrible injury record. But maybe could have been managed better? DWP I think has been managed well if truth be told. Aside from the above Joe Bursik would be the one I'd say has been mismanaged the most. And I'm not sure if part of that is possibly also an arrogance on Joe's side but he shouldn't be playing championship football this season or last. On the whole though when you consider Collins, Souttar, Taylor, Tymon, Brown, Campbell, DWP and the other young players out on loan or still coming through like Griffiths and Tezgel etc.. I think he's done well in that department during his tenure. Collins was in and out of the side in favour of Chester in his first full season, with most of his appearances being from the bench!!! He had a short spell out of position at rightback/wing-back, when Smith was suspended, then again when Smith was dropped or injured, can't remember now??? Wright-Philips burst onto the scene with a couple of good games and a goal along the way, which (I recall) his grandad went mental over (a good mental by the way), then next minute he was gone.... In favour of new signings Philogene-Bidace and Maja!!! Tezgel.... I'm not quite sure how O'Neil comes into this, Russell yes, but not O'Neil!!! I'm not saying he hasn't given youth a chance, I'm just saying I can't give him to much credit when he's mismanaged some of them!!! Can't reply in full as out. Tezgel is the youngest ever player to play for Stoke and has been integrated into the first team during pre season and other periods. Russel deserves much more credit but I think oneill gave him opportunities too and was influential in him signing a pro contract.

I was very thankful for O'Neil first season and remain so, also for developing players like Souttar. Tymon and Taylor
But let's not forget that this is his job, he's paid very well for it
In my job, I work hard and I think I'm relatively well paid, yet I remain thankful to my employer for showing faith in me and that's how I believe it should be, not the other way round

Football is strange a bloke gets the sack because he's crap at his job and he's thanked. As I said above. 2 faced. Bit simplistic that. Few people on here have failed to recognise the early days structural work done by MON, and of course his first season rescue achievement. Conversly, many people have struggled to accept his more recent negative and inflexible management style when it has come to managing the team performance and style. One could say those represent polarised views. However, there is nothing wrong in recognising success and failure. Some might choose to call it two-faced, most would recognise it as simply a balance of praise and criticism WHEN and WHERE appropriate.

Thank you Michael For saving us from certain relegation to the Third tier of English football. Thank you for cleaning out all the overpaid deadwood and steadying our FFP crisis. Thank you for developing some of our great young players: Brown, Tymon, Tezgel, Campbell, Taylor, Souttar… Thank you for some of these incredible signings this summer. You’ve left us in a good place to be able to kick on as a club (Hopefully) I’m wishing him all the best.. With you 100%.Lot's to thank him for, and he has my best wishes for his moving on.

He did a good job keeping us up that season, and I'm thankful for it. He made us a pretty steady mid table squad, but we were never going to go forwards with him in charge. I believe that this is a good squad, and we should be getting so much more out of the players.
It's better for him to go now and have a pretty good level of respect from the fans, than to overstay and become the pantomime villain. Happened to Hughes, and he will never shake it off. He may not of personally relegated the squad, but he definitely sealed our fate. He will always be remembered for that instead of the consistent mid table finishes and the best football we saw at Stoke in the modern era.
O'Neil will be remembered for keeping us up at a really bad time, and that's not a bad legacy to leave behind.

Understatement of the last few years is how well he did when he first came and kept the club from the abyss and then also helped reform the wage bill and brought in some great young players. I've always thought he really should be in the front office on recruitment and not on the pitch after the last few seasons.

Shall you stay GAWA with the troubled ship SCFC? Yeah I've enjoyed watching Stoke and seeing the team develop, and have a real affinity for the squad at present too. Not particularly looking forward to the next 4-6 weeks though as I feel we are still going to struggle with the injuries. Unless of course a new manager can bring in a last minute player or two. Come October though it should be exciting to see how we play with a much fitter squad. Whoever the new manager is they'll need a bit of patience. Hopefully someone young and dynamic rather than a dinosaur. That’s a shame 😜

This seems like a lifetime ago now. Hell of a way to start his Stoke career, shame it didn't work out.

I guess with all the shit performances of late it is easy to forget the great work he did in keeping us up and the off field things that have been to clear things out.
His downfall was going all negative after the Campbell injury and never seemed to believe in himself after that
He’s left us in a better place off the field but not on it. Have played some of the worst football since I can remember and our current league position doesn’t lie.
I do wish him all the best

Thank you Michael for saving us in that first season and some great moments of football in that first season. We should always be grateful to him for preventing our club sinking to the third tier like so many former Premier League clubs. The conga a Barnsley, and the win at Forest will always be in the memory. He stuck to his guns not playing players who did not want to be at the club, and unlike any previous manager saw his duty to develop a string of talent from the academy and brought in young layers. To say more today would be churlish. We wish him well.
