Well I think it’s a testament to how Whelan handles himself as a person and not only as a player that he’s still rolling on after all these years, I don’t think he’s had any financial problems so he must be doing it for the love of the game, and in the engine room of the team where you soon get found out the lower you drop down the leagues. As a person, well just read what fellow teammates and opponents think about him and what high esteem he is held in. All I know is that when Whelan and Walters walked out of the door, they took the spirit of the team with them. The malaise had set in long before they left. No question that they're top professionals, but the problem was not adequately replacing them, not letting them go. Why Hughes thought an even more knackered Darren Fletcher was the solution is unfathomable. Maybe Hughes though Fletchers personally and professionally could be a positive influence in the dressing room, it didn’t work and he was a disaster on the pitch for us
