I watched the final hour today - is there anyone else in the race that can actually give Pogacar any real competition for the GC ? It just seems he can turn it on, on any terrain, whenever he needs to. It's pretty boring and predictable. I think the only way he can lose is if he crashes out of the Tour. Which is where G comes in…… Muh ha ha ha

Stage 8.
Summary. A shitshow. A stage so dull that people are crying out for the ‘exciting’ days of Sky. A frantic final 3km doesn’t make up for the fact that this was an abomination of a stage which belonged on a Wednesday in the final week rather than a Saturday. The crash at the start of the day just killed the race and I hate the whole notion of the race being effectively neutralised so that everyone can come back together. A rotten stage which is actually befitting of one which finished in the home of the IOC, an organisation so corrupt (allegedly) they make Bernie Madoff seem like a bit of a scamp.
Winners - No-one. We were all losers today.
Losers - Everyone.

There seems to be a lack of genuine GC contenders apart from Pogacar. The other so called contenders are currently light years behind this guy. For the Tour to be so utterly boring and predictable at this point is ruining the race as a spectacle. I watched eurosport this afternoon and despite the commentators best efforts it was dull, dull, dull until the final couple of kms. Pogacar is 39 seconds ahead, with G in 3rd at 1'14" and there is no sign whatsoever that G could claw back that time gap. Unless he crashes out Pogacar will win by a sizeable time gap and there seems nothing the others can do. Is he really that good or is he just good in a period where the others are not really top calibre GC contenders ?

Everyone knows that Thomas won’t be able to hack it if Pogacar goes full gas on a mountain stage. Same for Yates, same for Roglic, same for Martinez. The worry I would have is that if for some reason Pogacar decided to attack at the bottom of a 15km climb, then it could make the GC a laughing stock. Vingegaard is the best of the rest and has bags of potential but can’t see him living with Pogacar day after day if Pog decides that he’s going to make it tough.

Great ride by Jungels today - well deserved win. Tough on Pinot. Usual boring and predictable GC "battle" - do the other riders know they can actually try to have a go at Pogacar ?

Winners - As the kids used to say (or not) in the 90’s, Bob Jungelsist Massive. Descended like he had a death wish and gave AG2R a huge boost after O’Connnor’s monumental shitting of the bed.
WVA - sensible choice of green jersey and black shorts. Even a Belgian cycling God cannot look good in a full matching ensemble. When he had the Belgian champion’s jersey, he looked like a fucking badass. When he wore all yellow earlier in this race, he had looked a bit like a giant toddler. Albeit one with the skills to pay the bills.
O’Connor - Losing enough time to be allowed some freedom to stage hunt later on, assuming he doesn’t abandon tomorrow.
Ineos, etc - some would call it cowardice, fear, lack of ambition, inability to seize any initiative and so on. Well, the joke is on anyone who thinks that, because they have taken the approach that if you don’t poke the bear then he wont savage you.
Pinot - timed his counter attack to perfection in that he maximised his TV time (vive le France) and gurned his way to a spectacular fourth place. Knew in his heat that he had no hope of catching Roberto Jungelso. Rides a bike like an amorous squid attempting to shag a teapot and the last 500m was the majority of Pilot’s career in microcosm.
Geschke’s beard - luxurious. Like a Teutonic Bullet Baxter from Grange Hill. Has possession of the polka dots too.
Castroviejo - points for the team classification. <taps head> What a pro. He knows what the real aim is.
Losers
Martinez - bloody hell. Dropped at 21km to go on a climb which should not be fazing him. Ended up 15 mins down on Pogacar on the stage in a group with that renowned mountain goat Stefan Kung. The Ineos triumvirate becomes a duo and all things being equal Yates will have his usual off day and lose big time. That leaves them relying on Thomas, who is more comfortable with a Werthers and a SAGA brochure these days.
The breakaway group - no way they should they have let the gap open like that, regardless of how strong Jungels was. You can’t just lean on WVA all the time to do the long pulls or think that the time gap will magically evaporate.
Vlasov - COViD still lingering or just knackered. On the plus side he didn’t, as it’s now known, ‘Do a Martinez.’
Ineos, etc - failed to poke the bear. Yes, I want the best of all worlds 😂
Mas - because, yeah, fuck that guy.
Cavendish - hasn’t even won one stage this year.
Rest day tomorrow. Thank fuck. The excitement has been too much for me.

I don't know what pills the eurosport commentators are on but they were saying yet again today how brilliant this year's race has been ! I know they get paid to try to make it sound good but I honestly can't think of a TDF that has been as boring. Last year's race was a borefest but it pales in comparison to this year. Pogacar is bloody good, but he has no real competition does he.

Borefest is about the best description so far. Personal rest day summary: Would loved to have seen Powless get a yellow for a day. Would have been great for US cycling. Was hoping for more down hill action from the Brit kid. Ah well.

Second rest day thoughts (lazy bastards.)
On the radar - Leaving aside the usual suspects, for me it’s Gaudu, Bardet and Powless. If Bardet made it into the top 5 somehow, that would be outstanding for him, similarly a top 10 for Gaudu would be impressive. If Powless is anywhere near the top 15 at the end, then he will have ridden very well
Radar adjacent - Vlasov, Caruso, Meintjes, (I told you that he’d begin his stealth creep up classification. He’s now 17th on GC. His wife thought he’d only gone out to get some milk and didn’t realise until yesterday that he hadn’t returned.)
Off the radar - MVDP, Martinez, Woods, Ewan. A stage win salvages it for Woods, Ewan or MVDP but that isn’t enough for Martinez. Having him and Thomas lurking near the top added an element of (fictional but theoretical) danger to Pogacar. Whereas now, if he clips off the front, UAE can just let him.
Bermuda Triangle - O’Connor, Guerreiro B and B Hotels. O’Connor has abandoned now to focus on the Vuelta, Guerreiro didn’t start yesterday and B and B may as well abandon en masse unless they fucking do something.

Got time for a little analysis on Tuesdays bun fight? Short stage and a long climb to finish, but not a taxing one in the scheme of things. Logic suggests a day for a breakaway which should go the distance, with GC guys more concerned about stages 11 and 12. From an entertainment point of view, I’d like a small(ish) break to go, with 8/10 riders rather than a schmozz with 20 plus. Toughest parts of the final climb are a 2km section with 7km remaining and the last 600m or so. The whole climb only averages 4.1% so if you are in the break then this should be where the attacks come. UAE, even with depleted resources should be able to control the road to the finish and if they are riding a bloc to deter attacks you’d have to be very brave to try and attack from that group. What do you think?

I know the post stage stuff is funny and interesting but its pre race stuff, and your notes of what to watch for, that, for what it’s worth, have me thinking of you. When mens loins are straining and someone’s trying to give it one last push from behind.. I always think…I wonder what Bod would think of this.

Bennett out with Covid, CyclingNews also have unconfirmed report that Majka has tested positive but has continued due to low, non-infectious, viral load.
Who said the tour was over? Marc Soler suddenly has quite a lot of riding to do - should be good for the Netflix doc.

Bennett out with COViD. Expect a raft of ‘Yeah, but Pogacar had a different type of COViD, so he can stay in the race.’ Majka is probably working out how he can not ride himself into oblivion and hope that Soler can contribute fully.

Winners - Pierre Rolland. Began his charge for the mountains jersey like a man possessed, scrambling for one and two points like a pig in a ditch.
Protesters who blocked the road. They knew that Hinault wasn’t there and took their chance. It transpired that they were protesting about the non-selection of Harry Brook for the cricket and their anger was thus justified.
The onscreen ‘Pause’ graphic which indicated that the race had been, erm, paused.
Everyone who has been dropped from the bunch before the race was paused as there were no time gaps between the peloton and them. Result.
Urophiles (not to be confused with Europhiles, though there may be a coincidental overlap) - plenty of opportunities to watch riders, team personnel and officials all relieve themselves in glorious 4K when the race was suspended.
The peloton - bit of a rest day for them, in as much as a 150 day in the mountains can be considered a rest.
Majka - has the good Covid, which means that it’s fine and so it’s time to ride on baby. UCI won’t confirm if COViD severity is in direct correlation with the importance of a rider to the team.
Pogacar - has his fingers in his ears pretending that he doesn’t ride for UAE. ‘Rafael Majka? Never heard of him.’
The breakaway - bit too large for my liking but some high quality riders in there. Leknessund, Kamna, Jorgenson and Schultz all have so much potential. The little battle between Simmons and Kamna was fascinating as they were just glued to each other a lot of the final 30km.
Cort - won that like an absolute champ. Properly mugged Schultz on the line and timed it to perfection.
Losers
Bettiol - brave attacks but glad that it came to nothing after his shithousery on the cobbled stage.
Wiggins’ potential career as a diplomat. ‘Imbeciles sat on the road. Pascal Lino obviously threw one of them in a ditch. They were probably protesting over nothing. Some of the DS’s were getting angry and stuck the boot in. Great scenes, it’s all going off here.’ Not sure that he will be regarded as the natural successor to Henry Kissinger. Very interesting use of the word ‘Obviously’ too 😂 Good chance that Bradley watches a lot of Guy Ritchie films and thinks that Ronnie and Reggie only harmed ‘their own kind.’
Martinez (again) - finished 20 behind the stage winner. What can he now contribute in the mountains? On today’s showing, very little.
Kamna - feel a bit shitty having Kamna as a loser but he didn’t take the stage, missed out on yellow and has now placed himself in a GC position which means that he will have to lose big time to get some freedom back to go for a stage. If he has any interest in the mountains jersey he’s going to have to purposely lose an absolute packet ASAP.
Thomas watch - changed his sunglasses which effectively means that he has conceded a podium spot. They are the glasses of a stage hunter.
As Marylandstoke asked, I’ll try to do a preview for stage 11 later.

Pleased Cort won, he couldn't have timed it better. Good to see Sanchez having a bit of a go 10 years after his last TDF stage win.
The GC is just SO BORING isn't it. Kamna nearly "borrowed" yellow but that's probably as close as he's going to get. IMO the only thing that can lose the Tour for Pogacar is if he get's "proper Covid".
I can't believe how Ineos have regressed to such bit part players - not realistic GC contenders without Bernal, and don't really look like winning a stage either. I suppose the same can be said for quite a few other teams as well, but they don't have the Ineos budget do they.

Stage 11 - Albertville - Col du Granon
152km, one second cat climb, one first cat and two HC climbs and it’s the first of what should hopefully be a pretty brutal and decisive few days. Telegraphe/Galibier double bill in the middle/final third of the stage which goes over the highest point of the race at 2630m is when it gets super tough. Accounting for the descent that separates them, the Telegraphe and Galibier are a hefty 30km of climbing at 7%. In other words, it will hurt. Sprinters will be spat out the back praying that Ineos or Jumbo don’t decide to go full gas to wear down UAE (a doomed tactic which teams continue to follow year after year in terms of the strongest guy being isolated, but it still rarely works.) Given that UAE are riders down it may actually be a half-decent idea though, but Pogacar doesn’t rely on a team to the extent that say Roglic does in my opinion. On the flip side, perceived wisdom should be that UAE have the jersey and should be forced to make the pace and hope that that takes its toll on them. I would guess that a happy medium will be a breakaway going early so that hopefully the bunch can calm down a bit and not go too ballistic from the off as has become the norm in this edition. Let a break build up some time, safe in the knowledge that time can be pulled back rapidly on the Galibier/Telegraphe if it’s needed. One way or another, it’s going to be hot on the run in along the valley road and if a group of interest somehow gets away on the Galibier, then the descent and chase for 40km or so to the foot of the Granon will be animated to say he least. Final climb is 11km at 9% and ends at 2400m above sea level. Col du Granon is not a TdF regular. Only been used once before which I didn’t know as I couldn’t remember it at all. Turns out I watched the stage it was used on too but it was 36 years ago and I’m mentally feeble. Theoretically this should be a proper GC day though, with anyone who has aspirations of moving up the GC looking at distancing some rivals. I wonder if Roglic will be put under pressure by a few people here? May also be a chance to ascertain whether the top guys have effectively conceded victory to Pogacar but are ready to fight it out for the podium. Leaving Pogacar out of the equation, a shoot out between Vingegaard (who is the best of the rest for me) and everyone else could be a highlight. On a proper mountain stage, the purer climbers like Mas, Quintana and even Bardet and Gaudu have to maximise gains to offset the losses in the final TT. The issue being that risk aversion is prevalent and the stage after this is Alpe d’Huez…
I think that someone of note gets dropped on the Galibier and then the pace will be unrelenting to the foot of the Granon. Pogacar wins if he chooses to, but I feel that someone will attack early on the Granon, if only to split the group rather than as a push for the win. Ineos need Yates to have a good day to play off against Thomas. Jumbo are trickier to gauge as even though Vingegaard is the best placed, Roglic has the seniority and the pedigree and I don’t see Primoz happy to act as Vingegaard’s super domestique.

A number of good calibre riders attacking at various points and a balls out uphill finish. I’ll take that.

I suppose for me it's just not the same without serious Sky/Ineos involvement in the G.C. There have been a few decent individual rides (today being a fine example), but I still watch most stages and think about how it's affecting the G.C. I suppose I just want Ineos to dominate in the way that Sky used to., being a British team and all that. Looks like those days are long gone though.
