I hope he stays. O'Neill will probably tell Holden to do what he thinks is best for him if the rumour is true.
After reading the Duck interview with Holden, I'm not sure if he'll be up for the extra hour down the M6 given how much he's enjoying his role at Stoke.

Ex Walsall player unusual for a number 2 to turn a number 1 job down Hope he does though

Have the over the top, ridiculous calls for him to be our manager subsided now then? I've just read through the whole of this thread, and it just rams home how many weapons are roaming this board

Good luck to him if he goes, hopefully we can upgrade with a replacement.

That would suck. I don’t really think it would be a good move for him to be honest. They could crash out of the league this season and aren’t exactly a team that will give him good exposure for a different managerial role. Yeah his next managers job if / when it comes has to be well judged otherwise another failure and he might find himself done, it just look a lose lose for him too, go down get sacked or big paycut, keep them up and it'd be a big struggle to do anything the next season.

Some characters in the game are better coaches than managers, time after time has proved that! Mike Phelen, Paul Clement, Brian Kidd, Rene Meulensteen, even our very own Chic Bates to name but a few have all dabbled at management but were better at coaching or assistant managing duties.

It seems a bit of a drop from his last managerial role at Bristol City where he was fine, if unspectacular. I’d hope if a job came up that he did want, then it’d be a bit higher up than a struggling League Two side. Not that money is everything but I imagine number 2 here pays better than number 1 at Walsall.

Not sure I'd want the instability right now, but MON is our manager not DH. If he feels he can further his career at the Sadlers ao be it. I cant blame him for taking a no.1 job, but would be happy if he stays.

Holden seems highly rated and a feet decent bloke it’s a mystery why he can’t transmit that energy into our play

I am not sure he is an answer, or the answer, but is there a case, if the play offs are out of reach, giving him a go until the summer and see what sort of a fist he makes of it?..Under MON we simply don't seem to be able to kick on to that next step. Invoking the spirit of Chic Bates. I like it! I thought Stoke played some of their most attractive football when Bates was manager.

Villa assistant manager, strangely. Did he do a Jug Ears? I don't think he gave the players the week off, then take his club car and not tell his employers, or anyone, that he was quitting for a number 2 job no. Stoke found out the same way we did by hearing it on the radio

Villa assistant manager, strangely. How odd🤷🏻♂️ It should be odd but only goes to illustrate the widening gulf between the Prem and Championship. I imagine his salary will have been greatly increased by this move and it will be a challenging job too, so not an easy move from that perspective.

Villa assistant manager, strangely. How odd🤷🏻♂️ He’s done a good job at Blackpool but probably recognises that he can’t really take them any further. Gerrard shadowed Critchley when he was doing his coaching badges, as Neil is a very qualified coach - so they’re friends, and know each other well. Moving out of the limelight of being a manager to being the coach might suit him better, and at a huge club with less pressure on him. Also, he sort of can’t lose. If it doesn’t work out and Gerrard gets sacked then Neil can be fairly confident if getting a new job or stay on at Villa. He would not be the fall guy in that situation. Oh. And the tripling of wages may also have appealed to him. For me, it makes perfect sense.

Plus he gets to coach a very bright crop of players If Villa can keep out of trouble they could develop an entertaining top 10 side

Can't blame anyone for taking an assistant Prem job. Totally disliked Coterill so had no problem him leaving. Really didn't get the fuss or hatred. He'd talked himself up as a future England manager quite arrogantly so working with Wilkinson wasn't going to harm his prospects. I remember driving and hearing it on the radio and thinking ...can live with that. Villa no2 a big big job and some great players coming through there as we've found out the hard way

Cant stand in the way of a man progressing his career. Don't think anything can be nailed down in the Stoke set up, if they want to go they will go anyway.
