Amazing that you can sign a good player for free that makes a noticeable difference, highlights just how poor our recruitment has been in that department. Surely part of the job of working in football management and recruitment is to know a player when you see one. It's surely not rocket science It's not rocket science but nowhere near as simple as you're making out. Signings can fail for many reasons. I think some of our signings were destined to fail (like Wimmer) but others could have come off - in an alternate world, Berahino might be as revered as Stein, Sheron and Thorne by now! Hopefully it's a case of right place right time with Baker, and we are due some luck in the transfer market.

You can stack the odds heavily in your favour though if you identify the type of player you need, know your market, look for that player, be sure he is half decent and then do your homework on said player, character, injuries and that they are going to fit what you want to do etc.. The in depth detail is all the more important when you're on a budget. We've got Baker now but he's been staring us in the face for seasons, without as far as I'm aware a slither of interest apart from recently. Players that make the difference will always be available, it depends how deep you're willing to dig to find them and further dig to make sure you're signing the right player to fit what you want to do. The u23's/reserves of all the rich clubs have players that will walk this level and become available at some point, either on loan or permanent. We should know that market inside out, I'll bet you we don't though

Baker has a list of clubs where he failed to settle or make a big impression

We should know that market inside out, I'll bet you we don't though You're still oversimplifying. The odds are never stacked heavily in our favour unless we're signing someone like Messi or Ronaldo at their peak. Yes, you can increase the odds of a player being successful, but there are no guarantees and a certain percentage of signings will always fail. I bet there are very few players who have been a roaring success at every club they've been at. Fernando Torres (and a few Chelsea signings both in and out) come to mind. Many of our most successful signings in recent years have been punts to an extent too - "from Battersea Dogs' Home" as Pulis put it - some were massive successes (Walters, Etherington etc.) and others weren't. Background work was done on all of the signings, but there was still no guarantee of who would and wouldn't be a success. Hughes continued in the "dogs' home" mould with some big successes (e.g. Bojan and Arnautovic) but too many crippling failures (partly because he went too far down the gamble route). If Baker has been staring us in the face for seasons, why didn't anyone else sign him permanently before? We're shopping in the same pool of numerous clubs. And apparently we had shown interest sooner, but maybe Chelsea didn't want to let him leave permanently at that time. And who knows - if we had signed him sooner - he might not have been a success (and he still might not be - we're basing our opinion off a few excellent games).

If you're doing the right things the law of averages might suggest you'd get a few right, our transfer record for maybe 7 years or more since late premiership days has been abysmal, so abysmal you'd be forgiven for thinking it was intentional, we've literally needed major surgery every season and a revolving door on the main entrance. This winter we've done major surgery aswell. How can professionals in their field be so wrong time and time again consistently... if theyre doing the right things? Good job they're not doctors

Good job they're not doctors If every club got it right at our level they wouldn't be where they are. Boro spent more than us after relegation. We signed some great players in the Prem for little money but some conveniently forget that over the more expensive ones that don't work out as suits their agenda. When Beckham was sold, SAF signed some utter rubbish with the money. Happens at all clubs . Name a club that hasn't spent badly at one time.

If they stay up then perhaps but until then. We spent 10 years in the Prem, hardly a comparison.

Ask Brentford fans, and I'm sure they'll come up with a list. Given they don't splash the cash like many teams, it won't look as bad as some of our failures quite yet with our different records in the top 2 leagues over the past 15 years.

If we can keep him (he looks like a premier league player playing alongside a bunch of school kids at the moment) this is the only positive of the season.
It's not rocket science, get a proper destroyer alongside who just sits in. Free him up and let him run the game and score 10-15 a season easy.
Top class

Top class He's certainly a level shoved the rest of our players. But he MUST be played ahead of a defensive midfielder. Playing him in a defensive role is a total waste. As you say he is the big positive of a grotty season.

I cannot see how we hang onto him this Summer, guaranteed a Premier League team will come looking. If he's only on a two year contract yeah, you'd think a prem league team or maybe a relegated premier league team will chuck a few million our way and get him easy. We need to change manager and show some direction before the season is out.

He's also going to be our top scorer for the season I’m not so sure. He will have been well touted around before he signed for us and there will be plenty of scouting reports on him too. A couple of months of good form doesn’t suddenly transform him into a target that clubs will pay good money for (in this climate) when they could have got him for free months earlier. He’ll still be here come August.

He has just come from a premier league club only a few weeks ago on a free transfer so why on earth would he attract Premier league interest after a few decent performances in a mid championship team.

I’d be tempted to move him into the number 10 role if we play a 4-2-3-1 shame his early effort that hit the post didn’t go in could have been a much different outcome..

He should be getting 10-12 next season with his shooting outside the box and ability to take a penalty. That would be a huge return from a non-No.10 midfield position.
We need someone in that is similar to Allen, but stronger and more disciplined. Then have Powell and Baker do the work they need to.
