I’m sure if he’d played for one of the “top” clubs he would have had many England caps too

I think it was inevitable. Pity his later years were so injury prone. An undoubted Stoke legend. I'm not sure I have ever seen a centre back pairing at Stoke as good as his was with Huth. I suppose Smith and Bloor was close to as good in their day but I think Shawcross and Huth had the edge. I'd like to have seen him alongside Shtanyuk though - that would have been up to the Huth Shawcross pairing. An obvious question - will he join us as a coach?

Unfortunately it's been on the cards for a while and sadly the warmer climes of Miami couldn't help him either.
All the best Ryan. A true Stoke City legend.

A proper legend, from teenager to captain, the pairing with Huth was a thing to behold, and truly tested the best in the Prem. Good luck with your next chapter.

What an outstanding player and leader for this club. A true club legend. Hopefully at some point we will get a chance to celebrate that properly and not just at half time

A true captain and a true Stoke all time great, who handled himself and his fame off the pitch eqaully as well as he handled everything on the pitch. A true professional and great bloke.
Nothing but respect for Ryan and all he did for us.
Enjoy your retirement Skipper! It really was a pleasure having you lead us for so many years.

What a player and representative of our great club. He'll always be welcome at the Bet365 and who knows someday in a coaching capacity maybe?
All the best for the future Ryan.......

Has he done any of his coaching badges? Yes, he has them all A and B and most recently the Pro. He says he wants to be a manger. I expect he will start as a coach at an English club in the top 2 divisions. If he was to go directly into management it would probably be in a lower league or even non league.

Are you suggesting that their contribution in 74/75, when we nearly won the League, was because the rest of the team was so good? For me, whilst it's impossible to compare the players of different eras in any meaningful way, I'd still go for Smithy and Bluto. Anyway, for that one season, I think Faye was outstanding alongside Shawcross, and pretty much carried Ryan through. A pity he was about to go into a sudden decline!

Brilliant servant for the club, such a shame injuries have hampered him at the tail end of his career.
I’d certainly be looking at getting him on the coaching staff at Stoke with a view to him taking over as manager one day.

Anyway, for that one season, I think Faye was outstanding alongside Shawcross, and pretty much carried Ryan through. A pity he was about to go into a sudden decline! I think it is close but I'd stick with Ryan and Huth - largely because Smith and Bloor were slow by today's standards even though they would be faster if they played today. Good point about Abdy - sadly after one brilliant season I don't think I have ever seen a top player drop in form so quickly. Of course my dad (A ManU fan!!!) rated John Charles and Stoke's Franklin as the best British centre halves he ever saw - they would have been a great pairing - especially as Charles was also a supreme centre forward as well as a centre half. In the modern game Charles could play at centre back and would probably get 10+ goals on most seasons.

All players come and go.
Many players leave memories of a great goal or save or match.
Some players you can build a team around.
Precious few players can you build a club around.
Ryan, you were one of those.
Thanks for everything, Captain.
All the best for the future to you and your family.
Come home soon.

The thing that makes Ryan stand out even amongst his fantastic team mates is that so often he put the club before himself ahd great as many of them were there aren’t many who can jump that hurdle .
He’s been a credit to himself , his family and his club and we have been extraordinarily privileged in this age of me me me to have had him as a player , captain on the pitch and club leader around .
Destiny I’m sure will see him return at some point if Gerrard is Liverpool and Terry and Lampard Chelsea , I’m more than happy for Ryan Shawcross to be our identity and leader as polished may be not , as two of those but as committed and proud to lead and representative of all that’s good about our DNA no doubt .

Never took a backward step , never tugged his forelock to the supposedly ‘superior’ clubs and players. Ryan was the epitome of an era that saw the club fight back from obscurity and as such will be rightly up there when ‘legends’ are discussed.

Wow, stunning to read his piece in the Sentinel that he had a complete disc replacement in his back recently. The fact he even tried to come back from that epitomises him and his character.
Happy retirement skipper.
