Different eras have different players who are synonymous with their clubs. We've had many over the years, but Ryan Shawcross is one who rightly stands out as the epitome of Stoke City during his time with the club in the modern era. An absolute gem of a signing by Tony Pulis, and one who developed into an outstanding player and leader by example, on and off the pitch.
As has already been mentioned his partnership with Robert Huth was a delight to watch and they gave many opposition players a torrid 90 minutes, particularly at the Britannia Stadium. His latter years were sadly injury prone and today's announcement brings to a close a great career.
Hopefully Ryan will return to Stoke City in some capacity in the near future but in the meantime it just remains to say "Thank you Ryan, and good luck in your retirement and the next stage of your career".
Ryan Shawcross #17

Ryan was simply magnificent for us.
We've had players with more flair but when historians step back and ask the simple question 'Who contributed the most to the cause of Stoke City football club?' Ryan is right there with the very best of them.
The 10 years in the Premier League simply would not have happened without him.
I salute you Ryan, said with a tear in my eye.

Such a shame that he was so true to himself that he went for THAT tackle in a friendly. We have never come close to having a defender who could read a game at his level since.
Thanks for the service Ryan. Now get the hell out of that crazy State!

. The best most consistent player I've seen at Stoke City in my lifetime and the one most deserved of the legend status. It's a shame he wasn't as highly rated by so many opposition fans (largely thanks to an unfair reputation), but Shawcross never seemed to care about that so why should we? Wow, stunning to read his piece in the Sentinel that he had a complete disc replacement in his back recently. The fact he even tried to come back from that epitomises him and his character. Happy retirement skipper. Up there with Murray's comeback in tennis? Shows a lot about both their character and determination.

Leader Legend and seemingly a bloody good all round bloke
Second only to Smithy in my 59 years of watching (and only by a small margin )

What a cracking signing he was🙌 The best signing we made for many a year. He was the mainstay in a golden period for our football club.

I’m sure if he’d played for one of the “top” clubs he would have had many England caps too Not even one of the top clubs, just one of the ' fashionable BBC clubs', y'know a Southampton, Bournemouth or Arse back when they were shit and Calum Chambers was getting called up to every England squad because y'know, "he must be good, he plays for the Arse after all.... Wenger thinks he's good". Undoubtedly, at one point Ryan was one of the best centre backs in the Premier League. This was back when we weren't a particularly good attacking team either and equally lacking technically in the middle of the park, so much of our game involved soaking up pressure. He was an absolute giant amongst men. There are so many games where supposed top players turned up and spent 90 mins in his back pocket.... Diego Costa, Luis Suarez, Rooney, Van Persie, Giroud (about half a dozen times) and they're just the ones I can name off the top of my head. There are countless others who came up against Ryan and left the battle empty handed. Ultimately, the injury changed him. He was never the same. He never moved the same and I remember those games where it was clear that his back was covered in tape. I suspect he played through a significant amount of pain and it saddens me that his career has been cut short in such sad fashion. Still, there's no point on focussing on the end. We should remember him for 10 arguably incredible seasons. Sayonara chief.

Great player for Stoke, best of luck to him in whatever path he takes. I would think he would forever be wel ome back to Stoke. Not many players stick with a club for so long nowdays. Reminds me of Matt le tissier in his dedication to his club.

What a player and representative of our great club. He'll always be welcome at the Bet365 and who knows someday in a coaching capacity maybe? All the best for the future Ryan....... Lovely piece. The term "legend" is very over used, not in this case, totally justified and deserved

I think it was inevitable. Pity his later years were so injury prone. An undoubted Stoke legend. I'm not sure I have ever seen a centre back pairing at Stoke as good as his was with Huth. I suppose Smith and Bloor was close to as good in their day but I think Shawcross and Huth had the edge. I'd like to have seen him alongside Shtanyuk though - that would have been up to the Huth Shawcross pairing. An obvious question - will he join us as a coach? Be amazed if he isn't found a position if he wants one, isn't his lad a bit of a prospect too ?

Just by the way, good of Inter Miami to do a decent piece celebrating his whole career on their website like that. Only a little thing but they didn't have to do it.. he was a veteran signing who didn't make much of a mark on the pitch there. Nice to see them recognise his outstanding career elsewhere.

What a player. At his best he was practically peerless and I wouldn't have swapped him for anyone around.
Wish the skipper all the best and hope to see him back in Stoke colours for a testimonial and one day, all being well, in the dug out as our Manager.

My favourite player ever. Hopefully the club arrange a brilliant testimonial and we can see Huth again too. If I didn’t need the comfort of my marital bed I’d slap a massive framed picture of Shawcross and Huth with that little scrote from Wolves by the throat bang in the middle of the living room.

Hardly post much nowadays, mainly read, but I feel I have to leave a comment on this. Thank you Captain for such loyal service to the mighty potters. Far too many footballers nowadays think that the game owes them something, instead of getting their head down, working hard, showing commitment and earning their huge wages. You are an exception to the modern day footballer and deserved everything you got through playing football. You are a Stoke City legend and I can only hope that you come back to the club in some capacity in the not too distant future. Thank you Ryan and best of wishes on your retirement and future.

Sadly his back was always going to determine the end date of his playing, it was an issue for a while, even when he managed to play for an extended period, he wasn’t the same. That’s not meant to be disparaging but when he was fully fit and on song he was simply brilliant. Hope he’s back in the fold at Stoke very soon and hope he goes on to have as successful a career in coaching/managing. Cheers Ryan 🥃

That bears it out.

Ally McCoist and Gabby Agbonlahor talking about Ryan on Talksport a few minutes ago. The Ex Villa forward said he was horrible to play against, elbows in his back all through the game but said he was a brilliant defender. McCoist watched Stoke training when Hughes was manager and said that after 15 minutes he knew that if he had to pick a 5 a side team, Ryan would be his first choice,a no nonsense but excellent defender.
On a personal note,Ryan visited Grandaughters school many moons ago,(the pre season after we won promotion)and although at the time having no interest at all in football,it started her off on the sometimes rocky, but rewarding road of being a Stokie.
Thanks for everything Ryan,Stoke legend.
