This one, after the roof had blown off the Butler Street Stand. We were at the back of the open Hamil Road end terrace. I don't recall any Boro fans at all on the day. It looked like it was petering away in to the usual 0-0 bore draw you expect whenever Middlesborough are in town but, f*ck me, up popped Ian Moores with an 87th minute winner to spark off scenes of unconfined joy on all 4 sides of the ground. 21,000 was a huge gate for Vale Park at the time, over 5 times their average attendance that season of 4,000. 17th January 1976 Stoke (0) 1 Middleborough (0) 0 Moores 87 Attendance, 20,975 Stoke City: Shilton, Dodd, Pejic (Lumsdon), Mahoney, Smith, Bloor, Robertson, Greenhoff, Moores, Hudson, Salmons Middlesborough: Platt, Craggs, Cooper, Souness (yes, that one), Boam, Maddren, Brine, Spraggon, Willey, Hickton, Armstrong

Yes went with my Dad any my mate Phil Locket and his Dad , Cliff. Remember standing on what was an open top embankment ( I’m being kind). Missed the goal as my Dad and Cliff wanted to leave early. Only time I’ve ever left a game early.

I’m curious to know, as I was only 6 months old at the time of this game.. back then, was there the same level of ‘rivalry’ and hatred between fans as there is now, or has it been fuelled more by our being in the same division as them (or even briefly bettered….) in the 90’s?

I'm sure we won 6-0 or 6-1 once ? Jeff Cook might of filled his boots unless my memory playing tricks.

Stood bottom right of the Bycars end, freezing cold and bored shitless.
Seem to remember the only feeling of joy the goal brought about was summed up by my mate who said "Thank fk for that, let's get out of this shithole"
Caveat, I'm not actually anti Vale and at that time worked there on the turnstiles but that game was probably the worst of the many games I saw at VP

Yes, was on the Hamil end. Don't remember much about the game other than Hudson ran it sometimes picking the ball up from the keeper.

I was there doing the do at the Hamil Road End Zoo. Spoke to a few Boro fans also. Because there was only a few of them there that day. Not a bad bunch of lads either, also not a woman in site. How things have changed since those days. A game that would normally be forgotten, but only reason i remember it was because it was played at Putrid Vile.

There was a culture of going to each other’s games, although Vale would sing anti Stoke songs. The ‘rivalry’ was more akin to the non event that is Forest-Notts County. Vale scores would get cheered at half time in the 80s if they were winning, the first time I noticed a change was when they were losing 0-5 at Walsall which produced a huge cheer. Vale, of course were by this stage having the temerity to be rather good while we were about to drop to Division Three for the first time in over 60 years. And that’s how it’s remained. I would happily go Vale Park once to watch a match, but I wouldn’t feel comfortable watching games there now.
