Does anyone know how many (if any) crowds have been bigger at Vale Park since then? The FA cup 4th round game v Watford in 1988 attracted 22,483. Swelled no doubt by many Stokies (including me and Dad) on our annual day off on 4th round day.

I was in the Hamil end. I remember even at that age thinking how tedious Middlesbrough were. Later in the year we played them and again they were dull. Passing back to the keeper from the halfway line. Years later when he managed Newcastle, Charlton had had Beardsley and Waddle at his disposal and some talented players BUT he sent them out the same dull way. That was how he intended football to be played. Which was a waste

It must be a Geordie thing, O’Neil played for them as well!!

However, I remember a 1-1 draw at the Vic with Middlesbrough that was beyond tedious with multiple back passes. Souness scored a wonder goal and the MOTD coverage began with a view across the rooftops of Stoke with the commentator asking “Is this the home of the champions”.

Yeah I was at the front of the Hamil End.
We left 5 minutes from time so even missed the goal.
I remember nothing about the game but recall a conversation between 2 young lads to my left ,obviously Vale fans ,with one saying to his mate
" The atmosphere is loads better when Vale play " 🤣

It's not normal and I think you need professional help.

But there was often a tedium tendency. At the 1990 world cup group the Egypt game was their most winnable. But they sat on a 0-0. That game's place in history is it qas instrumental in creating the new backpass rule. Bonner spent three minutes of the game with the ball in his hands. A win would've pretty much confirmed them going through.

It was mind numbingly boring.

This one, after the roof had blown off the Butler Street Stand. We were at the back of the open Hamil Road end terrace. I don't recall any Boro fans at all on the day. It looked like it was petering away in to the usual 0-0 bore draw you expect whenever Middlesborough are in town but, f*ck me, up popped Ian Moores with an 87th minute winner to spark off scenes of unconfined joy on all 4 sides of the ground. 21,000 was a huge gate for Vale Park at the time, over 5 times their average attendance that season of 4,000. 17th January 1976 Stoke (0) 1 Middleborough (0) 0 Moores 87 Attendance, 20,975 Stoke City: Shilton, Dodd, Pejic (Lumsdon), Mahoney, Smith, Bloor, Robertson, Greenhoff, Moores, Hudson, Salmons Middlesborough: Platt, Craggs, Cooper, Souness (yes, that one), Boam, Maddren, Brine, Spraggon, Willey, Hickton, Armstrong I was there.am i right in saying Lumsdon made his "HOME" debut away from home?

Yes In the Bycars, a fight broke out near where I was standing, two local characters, a big lad with a mullet and a tash from the Meir area against small lad with a big heart from the other end of the city

Did none of the early 90s Derbies get up to 20k-ish? The fa cup one, didn’t we take about 8k?

Did none of the early 90s Derbies get up to 20k-ish? The fa cup one, didn’t we take about 8k? The first couple were switched due to vale park having work done so the 1-1 draw at Stoke in September should of been played at Vale park The game at Vale was a 19k sell out in the February
