I’m curious to know, as I was only 6 months old at the time of this game.. back then, was there the same level of ‘rivalry’ and hatred between fans as there is now, or has it been fuelled more by our being in the same division as them (or even briefly bettered….) in the 90’s? No, as younger lads a few of us would walk there and watch them when Stoke were away, spent the paper round money to get in.

Does anyone know how many (if any) crowds have been bigger at Vale Park since then? What was their crowds v Spurs in the FA Cup or Man Utd in the League Cup, anywhere near ?

I was in the Bycars end about half way up just to the right of the goal. Usual boring game against the Boro mercifully ending in a win. Thankfully we never had to play another "home" game there !

I was there in the paddock I think. Ian Moores scored the winner didn’t he?

Anyone remember a dreadful nil nil at the vic when the only entertainment was a dog getting on the pitch. David Armstrong was playing for them I think?

I was standing in the paddock along the side of the pitch - no idea what it’s called. I remember there were 3 or 4 Boro fans in there running around being very mouthy. Everyone just ignored them.

They played Blackpool there as well, Sir Stan & all. The year that the Vale got to the semi at Villa park, v West Brom. An ex Vale player, McGarry, scored the winning goal.

No because it was Stoke v Boro OK, was it the most people to have paid to enter the ground to watch football during that particular season? It MUST have been 'cos all the other games involved Vale Obviously I was tongue in cheek but have Vale ever had 21'0⁰0 Unlikely in the last 30 years

No not at all It was common for Stoke fans to go and watch Vale also back then The early 90s fuelled it to the levels you see today Yes I often used to go watch Vale in the 70s when Stoke were playing away, if I couldn't make it. I never really supported them or even cheered when they scored but there a few Stokies who just simply wanted to watch some local football on a Saturday afternoon. It was never a big deal.

Yes I was there too. Parked up in Moorland Road and walked the short distance through the park to the ‘stadium’ 😉

When I lived in the area up til 1969 I was never that fussed about Vale or even saw them as rivals. Moving away when I went to uni, never to return apart from match days I never got caught up in the local rivalry that grew when Vale briefly matched us in the 80’s. Found it hard when they were a division above for a couple of seasons but the natural order was eventually restored and the 3 league gap of my youth returned until we got relegated in 2018.

This one, after the roof had blown off the Butler Street Stand. We were at the back of the open Hamil Road end terrace. I don't recall any Boro fans at all on the day. It looked like it was petering away in to the usual 0-0 bore draw you expect whenever Middlesborough are in town but, f*ck me, up popped Ian Moores with an 87th minute winner to spark off scenes of unconfined joy on all 4 sides of the ground. 21,000 was a huge gate for Vale Park at the time, over 5 times their average attendance that season of 4,000. 17th January 1976 Stoke (0) 1 Middleborough (0) 0 Moores 87 Attendance, 20,975 Stoke City: Shilton, Dodd, Pejic (Lumsdon), Mahoney, Smith, Bloor, Robertson, Greenhoff, Moores, Hudson, Salmons Middlesborough: Platt, Craggs, Cooper, Souness (yes, that one), Boam, Maddren, Brine, Spraggon, Willey, Hickton, Armstrong Didn’t go but remember the Sentinel Final headline that night’ ‘Stoke Thrill The Vale Park Crowd’ I’m sure I’ve still got the paper in the loft along with a lot of other old football finals. Also the crowd for the game is in my head as 21,009 which is a little bit higher than quoted here. BM

Just over 18,000 for the Man U league cup game, so the 21,000 attendance probably the biggest gate since they played Liverpool in a cup replay in the early 60's, from memory this was the game where a Liverpool fan was seriously hurt falling off one of the roofs.
