Marvellous player. Excellent centre midfield balance with Ardiles.

Probably like a few on here, remember seeing him score on his debut at Stoke.
Polite applause in those days too!
Really was a great player.

Imagine the abuse he’d get on here.
Lazy fecker. Doesn’t like a tackle.

I was there, a 25 yarder at the Boothen End of the ground as I recall. He got the nickname 'Glenda Hoddle' for not being man enough by aficionados of the Graham Souness school of 'take no prisoners' midfield play but on his day Hoddle was as magnificent a footballer as you will ever see.

Don't remember that game. Fantastic player. Falco was a great striker . Remember him scoring a great header in the Nou Camp in the CWC semi final and a very dubious ref ruling it out and sending Barca through.

I'm aware he got 50 England caps, but is Hoddle one of those players who was a bit wasted at international level? A bit like Paul Scholes perhaps, Joe Cole when he was at peak form, or Le Tissier who didn't even get a look in.
I'm only old enough to remember Hoddle as player-manager at Swindon and Chelsea, and vague memories at that. And nothing in the way of clips outside of Spurs has stuck in my head.

Played in Monaco but we saw little of him on TV . Think Wenger signed him. Were fancied to win the European Cup but beaten surprisingly , can't remember who by. Maybe Fenerbache.Great team but Hoddle got a bad injury

Was there when he scored his debut goal. As I was when Trevor Francis scored for Citeh. And Tudor on his debut. I’m old.

Witnessing that debut goal is one of my main go to points when explaining how ancient I have become 🙂 - strikes a chord with most people.

I honestly believe that Alan Hudson would have eclipsed Hoddle as a football legend had he not have succumbed to alcohol and the night life.

A genius of a footballer who got a lot of unnecessary stick for dropping the overrated Gascoigne.

I can remember him playing for Spurs when they had Crooks and Archibald up front, down at the Vic.
He was brilliant that day, hitting long balls directly to their feet, outstanding. I think we lost, can't remember the score mind.

Why did he not get more England caps than he did? Did Robson not trust him?

Why did he not get more England caps than he did? Did Robson not trust him? he played Wilkins &/or Neil Webb at times instead Hoddle in a 442 > even with Bryan Robson next to him wasn't right really at Monaco he played behind the striker & was a revelation & to be fair David Pleat played him there for Spurs when Clive Allen got 49 in one season

Went to Euro '92 as well. Hodge seemed to get an inexplicable number of caps as well. Only really saw Hoddle as a sweeper at Swindon but he looked a class act even then.

This would be about 1981?

You can class Gazza as not being in a fit position to play in that World Cup but overrated he was not. Difference of opinion, Gascoigne didn’t achieve much in comparison to other players. In today’s game he would constantly get booked for using his arms and barging players out the way. He was overrated and a complete embarrassment to represent his country off the field and occasionally on. Doesn’t come close to Hoddle!!

Hodge got about 30 caps. Hardly excessive Feels like a lot, he was pretty middling. Part of two World Cup squads! Lordb's point about Hoddle and Robson not working is an interesting one. For all the mocking of 'he doesn't track back' etc, you do need a balanced midfield and if a player, however talented, doesn't fit how you want to play it's better sometimes to leave them out than shoehorn them in. Sven should have had the bollocks to drop one or both of Gerrard and Lampard.

Here is his debut goal aged just 17 in front of the Boothen. Feb 21st 1976, I can still feel my heart sink as it tears in to the rigging past the hapless Peter Shilton
