Every time that Smith has a bad game (like yesterday), you do start to second-guess things and question if we should be looking to upgrade there THIS season as memories of Bad Smith are awakened.
The Duhaney option is obviously really just there as injury cover as he's never going to displace Smith even if he has a long run of stinkers.
Difficult situation though unless we're prepared to loan in someone and make him the starter, and we're clearly not.
Interesting decision coming up on Smith's contract though, especially with him hitting 30 before the season ends.

I thought we looked much better going forward after the introduction of Doughty. He was actually able to beat his man and get crosses into the box. I feel he has too much quality to be sat on the bench for most of the games. Smith has a good cross in him, but hasn't got the pace to beat his man. I don't know too much about Doughty's defensive side of the game, but he certainly can be an asset going forward.

When's Tom Edwards back they are not making the playoffs overe there are they? Don't think we'd be able to register him in the 25 until January though. This won’t happen so I’m talking hypothetically, could we register him now even though he’s out on loan?

To me if it is true, sends out completely the wrong message to Smith. It's almost saying, you can be as crap as like, but you'll only be displaced if your injured.

This^^ I hear the rhetoric that we only want players that improve us, that can go into the first team, competition for places etc. There is a pass for Smith here and let's not forget Smith has his dodgy spells even though he started well this season.

I agree - but you'd imagine the list of Prem loanees who would have been available to us and an upgrade on Smith was very limited - and it doesn't look like there's the money there to buy someone from the lower leagues who'd be up to it. Pete Smith mentioned Valery of Southampton, Daley-Campbell of Leicester and Sterling of Chelsea as possibles that Champ clubs would have their eye on, and maybe not all of them would have been available. Could we have got one if we'd have promised them they'd be coming in as first-choice RWB? Probably - but it would have been harsh on Smith and probably would have ended his Stoke career, with him out of contract next summer. It's a bit of a no-win situation. It'll be interesting to see when we broach the subject of a new deal for Smith (if we do)

It'll be interesting to see when we broach the subject of a new deal for Smith (if we do) I think if there is an upgrade out there you have to take it and let the players fight it out. Wilmot has taken his chance over Fox and Chester. At 29 Smith isn't the long term answer. I think he played 35 and 30 games in the last two seasons with no real competition to drive performance. A good player should be targeting taking that mantle from him. I can only assume we would rather spend our money elsewhere. For my money though you need two wing backs for each side, it's hardwork and you need to be fresh Saturday Tuesday Saturday at 29 that's a big ask come Christmas we will see if he still has any form. I suspect he will be public enemy #1 by then.

And how do you know that that is the message that’s being given to Smith. Who’s said this? Perhaps the message is Smith we’re getting someone else in at your position, he’s a young lad that has potential so keep playing well so you can keep your spot.

Has Ostigard played much at right back? From yesterday’s game even if he had I doubt we’d want him there. Decordova-Reid shredded him to pieces out on the wing. Albeit at times it was because he was trying to cover for Smith but still he showed he naivety and doesn’t have the mobility.

Slow on the turn and didn’t look great one on one. His position is right centre back and he will be fine there though Fox in the left and Wilmott right is an option

I thought Doughty did very well at RWB when he came on yesterday.

Wilmot doesn't look comfortable at left of the 3, he said the back 3 showed their inexperience yesterday, I think he has to persevere with them, if you replace any with Baath you are back to square one.

It’s suc( early days for our defence, it’s almost unheard of to stick three youngsters together to form your back line. The more they play together, the more they’ll gel. I doubt Baath will be coming back in. Ostrigard showed his naivety yesterday and looked out of sorts, likely just a one off (hopefully). Our back line has the combined age of 64 years! Compare that to one of the best back three of all time of Bonucci, Barzagli and Chiellini - when Barzagli finally retired they had a combined age of over 100 years. Yesterday they got exposed, our wingbacks were pushing on forward and Fulham had some very good wingers to exploit the space. I think the main thing it showed is that against those kinds of oppositions it would make sense to have alternative options to of our wingbacks Smith/Tyson/Doughty. Hopefully this Dulhaney will offer that and then Fox is the alt on the other side.

Be interesting if Duhaney plays for under 23's today. Surely they must have Coates lined up for a loan?.

What makes you think he'd be a good right wing back? I never said I thought he’d be a good right wing back 🤷♂️😂 But we've got to accept especially after yesterday that we are going to play wing backs. MON if fully committed to the system and attacking wing backs not defensive ones. As you said in your other comment the defence were exposed by the midfield who were unable to retain possession (that is what it sounds like anyway as I haven't seen anything of the match).

Are you suggesting that Tymon and Alfie (left - right) might be a viable WB option should Smith be unavailable or out of form?
