Phillips was all over the pitch against Croatia, absolutely wasn't playing as DM. Against Scotland he was anonymous so was that simply a poor performance from him or did Southgate give instruction to sit back , or both? Factor in that Rice contributes nothing going forward , two attacking fullbacks who did very little attacking it all ended up as one big stodge As was pointed out earlier in the thread Southgate should have changed things at half time. "Rice contributes nothing going forward" in the same way that Kane offers nothing defensively In my view every midfielder should offer something going forward even if it's 'only' quick passes forward to more creative players I think the DM role is deemed by some to be simply an extra defender.

I did not get Declan Rice when he first played for England. First couple of games he simply passed the ball backwards or sideways without hesitation. I saw a few games this season when playing for West Ham and he was a different player. Driving forward and be positive. Against Croatia he was most effective in front of the back four. Against Scotland there was no need to play both Rice and Calvin-Phillips.
Bringing Foden off for Grealish and simply asking Grealish to play wide left was a very poor decision. Southgate should have replaced with Rice or Calviin-Phillips.

I think the balance is bang on. I’d be wanting more from the full backs going forward and all the attacking players. I’ve not seen enough of Rice to be either a fan or a detractor but him and the centre backs are doing exactly what I’d want them to be doing. Also the format does not really encourage attacking football most of the games I’ve watched have sent me to sleep.

Individually and collectively England were poor against Scotland and quite a lot of that was down to the lack of balance in the side, coupled with the highest level of caution I have ever seen.
Did either full back get beyond half way? I can't believe it was because they aren't good enough, it MUST have been down to managers orders.
Kane had zero service, no one got behind the Scots defence and the only crosses were poor ones to the near post from Corners...again, that must surely be tactical?
Pace, energy and movement would have seen us demolish Scotland. As it was the Scots were not, as anticipated, knackered in the 2nd half because we didn't have them chasing around like we should have.
After 20 minutes the commentators thought Billy Gilmour was breathing through his arse, yet he ended up MoM with Covid...our caution allowed Scotland an easy ride.

Man United offering McTominay and/or Maguire plus cash Can see McTominay maybe being open to that - but Maguire seems stubbornly unable to realise his time is up there, and a West Ham type club would be his best bet. Bookies don't seem to be considering them as serious option, and without players involved they don't seem able to do it for FFP reasons www.oddschecker.com/football/football-specials/declan-rice/club-after-summer-transfer-window

Its a strange one for Citeh , Rodri just about the best DM in the world and they have agreed to sign Kovacic from Chelsea and Phillips still there, so wonder what Pep is planning to do

I suspect they'll be wanting to offload Phillips as well.

There could be an amusing situation where Rice plays CB for his club and Stones CM and vice versa for England

Phillips spent much of last season injured I think? And Guardiola seems good at bringing players through after a season - see Grealish this season compared to last.

Rice is often labelled a DM but I'm sure he's driven play up the pitch for England sometimes. Haven't watched many Wham games though. Maybe he'd even get Macherano'd.

Shame Gundo has gone to Bsrcelona.
I know its Barcelona but not sure why players are in a rush to go to a cash strapped, morally bankrupt club who will realise they can't pay you what they offered and offer you monopoly money in return in a few months time.

My personal opinion, if anyone cares, is that this lad is mustard. It’s hard to single out a player when watching a game but sometimes I do when I wonder what all the fuss is about. I’ve watched him for big portions of games mainly for Weat Ham but also England and the work he does off the ball, the way he tracks his man, the interceptions and the general passing accuracy and progressive play is a treat. Well worth the money

Unless Rodri leaves it’s probably not good for England. One of the better midfielders in the squad and he’ll likely spend a season on the bench.

In the Italy final he bottled it a bit second half. There were times he carried the ball forward and it all opened up for him to have a shot. Instead of shooting, and he likes a strike, he stopped and played a short ball back. Overall though he's grown into a bloody fantastic midfielder.

Lampard, Scott Parker, Kevin Nolan, Noble.. now Rice.. he’s done the West Ham tradition of big-bummed, upright, slightly 1950s-looking midfielders proud.

Same could be said for Bellingham. Real Madrid are about as morally corrupt as they come. That Perez is completely vile, banging on about the Super League still. Hope he kicks the bucket soon.

I agree he has improved from the very cautious/ don't want to make any mistakes player, he was as a youngster.
He is going to go for a massive fee and be paid millions, for no other reason than he is a solid 7 out of 10 in the premier League, week in week out .
I can't fault him, he is a solid player who rarely makes mistakes but I do find him dull to watch , compared to Jude Bellingham, James ward prowse and Billy Gilmour. He just has less quality and vision on the ball than those guys .
I would like to see ward prowse and Bellingham in midfield for England, because they are so good on the ball,we would score more goals .
But it won't happen. Southgate will go for Rice = less goals conceded all day long .
Be interesting if west ham, sell Rice and sign ward prowse and improve though.
How's Southgate going to get out of that one !
Might well happen and we will see ?
