My memory goes back to the day we secured promotion to the Premier League. A 0-0 draw at home to Leicester ensured that we were promoted and Leicester avoided relegation. Interesting contrast in the journeys of the two clubs since then. We have been in decline since the 6-1 thrashing of Liverpool (an departure of Nzonzi). Leicester have broken into the top ranks of the Premier League. Lessons to be learned? Leicester went down that day.

I can't help it. I have developed an unhealthy resentment towards the title winning, self-styled "Kings of the Midlands" It just don't seem fair that their recruitment of players has been so incredibly good whilst ours has been so incredibly bad. If they win the F.A. Cup today I fear my resentment may tip over into something resembling hatred. wasn't so long back they over spent in the Prem and went down to the 3rd tier, escaping a penalty from the FA on the way. a real exception and good luck to them. nice owners and prefer them over say Arse winning the Cup

In that case their rise from the depths is even more remarkable. Senior moment.

If Denise was interested in football it would be us. That's a complete fallacy. It'd five years of poor recruitment (well, principally that of Hughes and Rowatt), that has caused the situation we're in, nothing to do with lack of resources. That's only been an issue under MON and the constraint of FFP.

I get the administration resentment issue, but could we describe these clubs who win trophies year after year as shining lights of good practice? They were £30m in debt in 2002 ![B-|](//storage.proboards.com/800541/images/GW5u7F6ZsL7YqNjCbXMk.gif) Don't here Gary Lineker mention this very often. Gary Linekar and Emile Heskey led a consortium including 30 local businesses that took over the club. It's hardly a secret. What should the new owners have done? Deducted some of their own points?

During the recent fury over the European Super League thingy I remembered, despite the global outrage, plenty of supporters prefer the. big money clubs to win everything. Tbe anger and daft nature of conspiracy theories in 2016 suggest it was awful for some fans to accept the money clubs had to to miss out

The funny thing in my mind about Leicester is the season before they won the league they put a 7 Million bid in for Zonz. I found this really strange, they were no where near our level and it was a joke to think he would swap clubs. Leicester managed to stay up , signed a magnificent defender for the following season and went on to win their first few games. Never will we see a better example of where team spirit and winning brewing confidence to produce the perfect storm of a league winning team. Winning the first few games gave them the luck/ believe and they carried that through the full season. That resulted in a club with the drive and believe it could be repeated. Excellent signings of managers and players and that's what's developed. I honestly believe our owners want and have tried to back our club to do the same and I pray they will get there before the stupid criticism gets too much and they walk away.

They have made some dreadful decisions in the last few years so deserve to be called out on them.

It was the making of them, and proves that relegation need not be the end of the world if you sort your shit our rather than just making soundbites to that effect in order to placate the fans. The only bad moment of any significance they've had since was the penalty miss against Watford in the play-offs where Deeney went straight down field and bagged a winner. Weren't the new rules regarding administration and points deductions brought in because of Leicester and some creative accounting?

That's only been an issue under MON and the constraint of FFP. The poor recruitment wouldn't have happened in the first place under Denise. And she certainly wouldn't have kept people like Scholes in situ. Plus we'd almost certainly look at the foreign market in terms of recruitment and marketing.

Local billionaire owners, I'm not saying their decisions of manager have been correct but they have fully backed every manager. if you have followed Stoke through the Barron years then you know ,even now ,we are privileged. We take the players, managers we want where as in the past any talent at Stoke was taken from us. We have no right to take Derbys manager. They are just as big as he as a club . Rowat had his head turned by the money for both signings and his wages. We blow all similar size clubs out of the water. Most supporters have never known us to be big hitters. Loose the Coates family and we will disappear for 20 more years.

I think what we have to remember with Leicester is they are an extreme example. While they have done so much right over the last few years, there's absolutely no doubt that the stars aligned for them in pretty unprecedented style in 2016 and the resulting boost in prestige that came with winning the title has helped them to stay in the upper reaches of the league ever since. It also helps when you can unearth a genuinely class 20 goal a season striker like Jamie Vardy who's just slightly over the peak age because he had a slow start to his career so they've managed to keep hold of him. Whereas if he'd been 22 in their title winning season he'd have been poached.
So while our board deserve the criticism they get for our dreadful recruitment policy which allowed us to decline so far and so quickly, not doing as well as Leicester isn't something they should be criticised for. Yes it *could* have been us if we'd made the right moves at the right time but in reality their rise has been one of those unique million to one situations where everything they touched turned to gold at the same time and the stars aligned for them. It's unlikely that the same thing will happen again for another medium sized club for many, many years unless football has a financial implosion.

It won’t partly because the big clubs shit themselves at Leicester’s success and ramped up their spending to try and make sure it never happened again. I don’t think the ‘stars aligned’ beyond them being well placed to take advantage when the top clubs took their eyes off the ball for various reasons. They were well placed because they recruited superbly, had a plan and stuck to it.

I don’t think the ‘stars aligned’ beyond them being well placed to take advantage when the top clubs took their eyes off the ball for various reasons. They were well placed because they recruited superbly, had a plan and stuck to it. Oh yeah they recruited well. But the level of success of their recruitment was just unprecedented. Absolutely every signing turned to gold and worked out perfectly, it just never happens. Good recruitment is part planning but also part luck because even with the best structure there are so many unknown, unpredictable factors like players settling into the area, gelling with the current players and manager etc etc. With Leicester that season absolutely everything worked and not just worked, worked to absolute perfection. They were also lucky with having no major injuries to key players whilst having a thin squad. And all the main title challengers were all in transition or having an off season all at the same time which gave the opportunity for someone to come from outside the usual 6. All those factors combined for Leicester that season and while it's possible for an outsider to come from nowhere to get into the top4 with good recruitment, to go all the way to the title is pretty much impossible it was a freak combination of events.

Another contributing factor to Leicester's success these last few years has been their committment to a progressive sports science program. From what I've read, their fitness conditioning and injury management processes are way above anything we have ever had at Stoke. Consider this... in their title winning year, they had fewer injuries than anyone else, meaning fewer players used and a more stable starting XI. They also had some of the fittest and fastest players and scored more counter attacking goals as a result. Envious???? you're damn right I am. Imagine what a club like Stoke could have done with our better than average financial resources, if we'd had a CEO with vision and a better understanding of the modern game.

The number of injuries we get for a team that plays so slowly isn't just bad luck. Look at the extra mileage they had out of Huth. We're so far behind the times it's frightening.

Having the balls to appoint Ranieri was the obvious turning point, and they then built on that and were able to get Rodgers, having said that when we appointed Brian Little that was seen as something ambitious, and for a short time it was...

Yeah I agree with that. The number of injuries we have and our seeming lack of fitness which seems to always leave us blowing out of our arses in the last 20 minutes of games can't just be coincidence. It's been a recurring constant under a number of different managers and different squads over the last 5 or 6 years.

Didn't their chairman die in a helicopter crash too? Quite a big issue to get over, their systems must be so well implemented -from recruitment to youth, to fans stuff. You really don't hear much of a bad word said about them. I'm extremely jealous and saddened that such a true a loyal stoke fan as is p. Coates couldn't put his all into the stoke city venture.
