They only escaped relegation last season on last day and continued that poor form for first 7 games this season.

Think they have 20 points more than us , just shows you what can happen when you have a good manager and players who play as a team all achieved on a shoestring budget

Good choice of manager who most people had probably never heard of. Why the hell we get it so badly wrong is what holds us back. We fish in a very narrow market compared to other forward thinking clubs & before anybody slates me i know every appointment is a risk.

They've hit a winning formula. largely like us when we got promoted. clever recruitment and a bit of a plan.
The table certainly doesn't lie.
I hope they go up.

It certainly puts pay to the frankly ridiculous notion that we couldn't be far more competitive than we have been this season.

We could have done better, I personally believe there's several reasons why we haven't but of course we could have. We also could have done a lot worse, see Forest, Derby, Bristol City and Sheff Wed 7th, 10th, 12th and 16th last season respectively.

They keep it simple, have players who aren’t afraid of work and not full of their own over inflated hype and a manager with a plan. You can go some way with that, but I don’t think they will go up. Still, good luck to them...better than our embarrassing shambles.

They’re a very simple but effective side. They get the ball forward quickly and play all their football in the opposition half. They also outrun the opposition in pretty much every match they play.
Also signing a striker in January who’s scored 9 in 18 would be a huge boost to any side.

It could be worse and the four you mention have all changed managers in the past 12 months as well, which proves that change guarantees nothing. I don't think as a viewing spectacle it could be much worse mind. I don't think there really is much of an excuse for how utterly rancid we look.

I suppose it as valid as asking how come we haven't done as badly as Derby this season? or even, how come we have done better than Derby, if you want to go for the cup half full option?

I'm just looking at their squad on Wikipedia now and I can't see Tyrese Campbell listed anywhere, so I'm scratching my head as to how they've won so many games? So true. My personal opinion is that anybody who thinks the Tyrese Campbell injury is the main reason for the second half of the season demise is seriously deluding themselves. We were mostly terrible even with him in the side and he was scoring some goals out of nothing. It would not have lasted regardless of his injury. I get folks holding onto this hopeful notion that we are a decent team with him back but I will say right now, if we continue with this dour sideways, backwards no movement football, zero ability to pass the ball at anything above walking pace, giving throw ins straight to the opposition half the time, hitting one good cross out of 30 attempts and comedy gold defending, we will do no better than this season. The football on offer is weak, dour, boring and has zero style of play attached to it. It looks like a practice match every time we play except somebody forgot to tell the opposition!

They've pretty much always made 5 subs a game since it was given the green light by the EFL (not sure if that also coincided with Ismael's appointment there) which means that they can sustain the high press/high intensity approach across the entire 90 mins.
Having a squad with the players to do that comes from a clear vision for recruitment, but also a model of selling to fund new signings. I'm all for us moving to a similar model with a director of football, but too many fans (and I'd include the owners in that) seem to view selling players as a failure rather than an opportunity, as evidenced by everyone crying when Collins was linked with Burnley in January. Yes, their offer was low in the context of similar CB sales in recent years, but people demanding unrealistic fees of £20m+ for him show what we're up against.
Lots of people want us to sign players, and criticise the club for not buying from abroad or the lower leagues, but I'm not convinced that any recruitment model we put in place (manager's choice, D.o.F etc.) can be successful while the culture of the club is to refuse to engage with player turnover as a necessary, and healthy, process in building a squad.
