It's a rare game in which Joe's isn't amongst our top three or four performers. I don't get these constant knockers. Do they think every team is composed of ten Bojans? What a weird recollection of history.

I agree re: DM role, but that is why so few teams have one - no longer a requirement for a lot of teams in the modern game. Whelan wasn't a true DM, he just played deep and under restriction - He was fortunate to be part of Pulis' caged midfield for most of his Stoke life so benefitted from a strict regime that shackled the central midfield to not expose the defence. He looked great when in space playing simple 5 yd passes sideways and backwards but anyone can do that. As soon as he was under pressure he would lose the ball & most successful tackles were a result of his own 1st touch. Listening to the misty-eyed revisionists you would think Stoke never lost a game when he played - we endured many heavy defeats with him in his unicorn role... We were Stoke in the richest league in the world, of course we endured plenty of heavy defeats. Name a team our size who doesn't in that league. If anyone can do that job, why don't they? Why has nobody done it as well for us since? His best games came under Hughes as well, rather than Pulis. Loads of teams have one. Fernandinho was one of Man City's most important players for years. Fabinho has been brilliant there for Liverpool. Ndidi is brilliant there for Leicester. Kante hasn't been the same player since Chelsea tried to stop him being one and push him further forward. Man City, Liverpool, Leicester, Chelsea??? Not quite the same circles really, but fine examples of how it should be done. 'Ordinary' teams dont exactly play the same tactics as the ones you mention, and I am not sure they do either any more... We do not have the luxury to sacrifice a player in that role. We briefly tried it with Woods (who is a carbon copy of Whelan) and after a false dawn it was a car-crash. As I said before, Mikel is the closest you will get and that suits me fine tbh. My point is that I do not know why people are so obsessed with having a 'true DM'? Oh, and that Joe Allen will be a very welcome addition to the squad when he returns from injury.

Of course 'ordinary' teams have them. Phillips was one of the best players in the Championship for Leeds last season. Moutinho has done a stellar role there for Wolves. Trybull was crucial to Norwich's promotion and is playing that role for Blackburn. Pearson does it for Preston. Woods is nothing like Whelan, he had none of the mobility or physicality. Whelan could be an animal in the tackle, Woods pootled around off the ball without any of that energy. People want that kind of player because it's been crucial both in offering the defence some protection and providing the foundation to build attacks on.

Scientifically that's correlation and not causation. I still don't think Allen is a player who can be the one who propels us to the next level. I am however curious how he will look when put next to Mikel. This may let Joe do his running around with some better purpose as Mikel will be the stable, tactical intelligence. Joe is a good player when he is paired with someone like that in my opinion. Missing that foil, as we have for nearly all of his time here, he seems to just run around and occasionally be in the right place. Both of those statements are an oversimplification of course but the point is made. I have been a big critic of Joe but there is a useful player there in the right setup.

Maybe not but that timeline is far from stating he's going to be the player to carry us to promotion, like many foolishly believe.

Heard he’s moving house at the moment.
I was looking forward to him returning but it smells like a deal has been done.

I wouldn't imagine any club would be looking to sign him until he had proved he was fully over this injury. I imagine that would take us past the transfer window in January, so I think we've got Joe until the summer at the earliest.

Can all the cash-strapped clubs form an orderly queue for the 31-year-old on £60,000-a-week!?

You’d think the only Premier League clubs who could potentially be interested would be Burnley, Newcastle or Palace.
Maybe if Swansea end up getting promoted they’ll fancy a reunion.

No-one in their right mind will pay the money to get Allen out of his current Stoke contract.
We'd have to hope that 'playing football' means more to him.
He's never a Premier League standard player, for as long as he's got a hole in his arse. God only knows where he'll end up. I couldn't care less, as long as his future's elsewhere.

Can you honestly see him as a PL player? If you listed the things he's not very good at, you'd probably break the internet.

He's a wealthy man I would imagine, if he loves football and I think he does, I can see him taking a big pay drop to secure another club somewhere else.

i can see him going to Burnley. Needs to have a good Euros.
He’s been a great servant at Stoke and extremely loyal just not the right signing for the system. If he goes I’ll wish him well.

I am told he's settled in the area his kids are settled at school and his Mrs likes her job, I can only see him moving to a midland club and if it's to be in the Premiership then that narrows it down, Villa, Leicester and Wolves unless he fancies a move to WBA who will have plenty of £ with the parachute money in the Championship. Gouranga.

If Swansea can afford a few mill then i would imagine he would jump at a reunion on less wages than hes on here. Highly doubt he would move to a Burnley etc when he will be having to travel for hours to go to training

I'll be amazed if there's a list of suitors given Age Injury Ability
