Ah didn’t see that. OK so he’s made the right decision in the end but he shouldn’t have named him in the first place really🤷🏻♂️ That would have made Southgate look worse though if verdict came back not guilty after dropping him. He couldnt be seen to pass judgment. Is perfectly reasonable to remove someone from their duties whilst awaiting confirmation either way. He’s his boss at the end of the day We’ll just have to agree to disagree on this one👍🏻

I'm sure he followed legal advice but I always think your chances are better if you turn up at your own trial to offer some first hand explanation rather than send your dad ! It's a strange one. As you say, he must have been advised by his expensive legal team. But I wonder if he had in mind the Frankie Boyle routine. In a playground bust-up, instead of "my dad will fight your dad", Frankie suggested: "My dad will shag your dad. And your dad will enjoy it". Worth Harry thinking about as he prepares for the appeal.

But many on here are believing everything the prosecutor offered but dismissing everything the defence has said Seriously it was all over in 3 hours, that’s an Islamic state courtroom not a western legal system

But many on here are believing everything the prosecutor offered but dismissing everything the defence has said Seriously it was all over in 3 hours, that’s an Islamic state courtroom not a western legal system I guess only time will tell. At the very least he’s been naive though. As a professional footballer being in the public eye comes with its pitfalls and you have to think about where you go and what you’re likely to come across. Not saying it’s right but it’s a worthwhile sacrifice when you’re getting paid over 100k a week. Ultimately he’s got enough money to hire a huge place out for all his friends with everything he needs but instead he chose to go out to bars where he’s bound to come across idiots. Being a footballer youre going to get lots of adulation but you’re also going to get idiots wanting to make a name for themselves too, due mainly to jealousy. As you said he’s entitled to spend money on what he wants but someone spending 30k on a bottle of champagne is going to wind the wrong sort of people up.

I don't think there's much going on in that slab head of his but I also don't think he's a bad lad. Getting dropped from the squad is the right move but it shouldn't mean he's discarded for a prolonged period.

But many on here are believing everything the prosecutor offered but dismissing everything the defence has said Seriously it was all over in 3 hours, that’s an Islamic state courtroom not a western legal system I am surprised that an expensive defence team such as Man United would have provided, got themselves into a situation where they went to trial with: a) only a few hours to see the charge sheet before the trial started and b) with many potential defence witnesses (including the defendants and some of their families) over a thousand miles away in the UK. If I was Maguire and Man United I'd hope for better legal advice than they seem to have got for their money. Personally, I think Maguire and his co defendants were so eager to get on a plane home when they were released from Police custody, they they didn't stop to consider the potential implications that a trial without them being there would have for their chances of an aquittal. I understand from today's papers that an appeal under the Greek legal system automatically means (unlike in England and wales) virtually a full re-trial - possibly in many months time. Maguire must hope that his legal team (or possibly a new legal team?) will use the period before the new trial to mount a better defence than they managed to yesterday and that they will be able to call witnesses to rebut some of the prosecution case. As a side issue - does anyone know if countries like the USA regard suspended custodial sentences as a bar to entry to the country in the same way as a custodial sentence which was not suspended is regarded?

He would have to apply for a visa before he went and it is totally discretionary. But due to nature of the offence very doubtful he would be granted one

After a two hour trial you honestly believe all that? It’s a sham of a legal system Yet millions in this country want to be ruled by these European courts Don't be ridiculous. Each of the EU countries has its own legal system just as each of the non EU countries of the world has their own legal system. We will continue to be subject to the laws of Greece WHEN WE VISIT GREECE in the future - just as we were when we were in the EU. And surprise surprise, the Greek visitors to our country will continue to be subject to our laws when they are here - just as they have always been. What MAY change is that it may become more difficult to arrest and extradite anyone who commits a crime in this country back here for trial if they then flee to an EU country.

Eh? He's dropped him from the squad and rightly so irrespective of whether I feel he's been screwed over. Southgate named him prior to the verdict. If it came out not guilty he would still be in the squad. If he dropped him prior to the verdict he would have jumped to the wrong conclusion. Ah didn’t see that. OK so he’s made the right decision in the end but he shouldn’t have named him in the first place really🤷🏻♂️ Given the circumstances, I would say Gareth did the best he could. It was "until proven guilty". The only problem for Southgate now is who does he use in his place. Iceland and Denmark are no pushovers, the latter always seems to have some bearded bloke spin in and knock the ball in the net. Just mark the bearded bloke!

It’s a sham of a legal system Yet millions in this country want to be ruled by these European courts ?????????????????????????????????????????????? What? There is absolutely no evidence to suggest that anyone from the British public (let alone millions!!!) want us to adopt the Greek legal system in this country There is about as much evidence as there is that the Greeks want to adopt the British legal system. That is just misinformed nonsense.
