Fletcher Shawcross Gregory Chester Jimmy Vokes Little Joe
Plus, turning 30 in the first few weeks of the season
Batth Clucas
And, if they sign
Brunt JOM
Surely, we have enough 'experienced, solid professionals' already in the group, we lack pace and dynacism across the pitch so WHY on earth are we still looking at old hat who are looking for one last pay day? It's not even a cheap option because, even though we don't have to pay a fee, we end up paying higher wages as we didn't pay a fee. Dont get me wrong, it's always good to have a few old heads who've done the rounds to lead the way, but What we really needed was a few mid-range players who could come in and strengthen and compliment the core we have (Fox at least is right in that group, I would look at players such as Paddy McNair (holding mid that we've been crying out for, can also cover at centre-half) from Boro, Alan Browne (goalscoring midfielder) and Daniel Johnson (tricky winger) from Preston, Cedric Kipre (athletic centre half) from Wigan, Jed Wallace (again, goalscoring midfielder who can play deeper or further forward) from Millwall and Leonardo da Silva Lopes from Hull (still a bit raw, but has the talent)- all relatively cheap, played at this level and offers us options and much needed cover across the pitch.

The truth is brutal you will have a few on here choking on there cornflakes by not sitting on the fence and telling it how it is , add Fletcher and Mikel into that group and they will be lucky to play 35 games between them , I’d love to know the average age of the Leeds team 🙃

Paddy McNair would be £5m How much would the others cost? Buttons compared to previous windows but it looks like, like most clubs, with no paying fans free transfer market was the one we had to use.
Further given Michael's public comments after the Wigan game re issues in the forest room he's prioritised character and experience.
For me the big flaw in Stoke since relegation hasn't been a poisonous attitude - I think all those types are out of the door already bar Wimmer and Bauer (both almost certainly will both be out on loan again), it's been mental weakness especially at the back. Senior players, providing you sign the right ones, should help with that.
Finally I'd argue we have probably improved the quality of the squad.
Looking for Campbell, Verlinden and maybe Tymon to add pace and verve.
Window is not shut and a winger/wide forward to replace Ince seems likely Would expect that signing (even if it's the 27 year old Boyle) to add some more running power.

I could just about accept it, if we had approached younger players and they all had turned us down, but we're only a short way in the transfer window, so there has to many avenues the manager simply hasn't even explored. but, as these older players, who probably are costly in terms of wages, the question is if there is any space in the season budget left for those younger players. Moreover these signings have zero sell on value and may be hard to get rid off if they can't hold up to the physical demands of a 46 plus match season.

Wouldn't complain too much at Boyle - naturally right sided, which will offer balance, in that mid-range age wise, experienced, but not out of legs for a good 3-4 years, and looks decent if not a world beater. The only question mark wound be how he would cope with playing a more consistent standard of opposition on a weekly basis.

Its an interesting strategy to try and get promoted with an old team , I'm sure they are desperate to try it before any parachute money runs out get another dollop of gravy money to invest in a new team even if it comes back down . There is quality and a good organised manager if he can motivate them to perform consistently and his results so far have been decent . On the downside I can't remember the last team like this that got up .

He's been quite critical of the younger players and he knows far more about them than we do. Edwards has clearly been a waste of space these last few months but MON has brought Campbell on leaps. It's a long long season and you need a decent group of about 20 players no matter what their age. We're not making the mistake of signing these players on long term deals so no problem with that. Were a dozen times last season we needed a wise old head on the pitch, particularly away from home when we'd got ourselves in front then fallen apart. Willian is 32 and just signed a 3 year deal at Arsenal.

O'Neil's a problem solver.
Right now the problem is promotion and he's building a squad to meet the needs of that challenge as efficiently as possible.
It's not an elegant or robust solution that considers and solves multiple issues at once but if it gets us promoted, who cares?

With age comes experience, and a good experienced pro will let the ball do the work, rather than themselves (unless you're Joe Allen, and enjoy running around like a puppy after a butterfly)!!!
I've always said (even with Crouch), that if a player feels fit enough (and no one will know better than themselves), then who are we to make judgement!!!
I remember when Campbell first broke into the side, and would get his chance coming on as sub.....he'd chase everything down for the first 10 minutes, then you could see he was knackered..... He must have learnt from it, or been told about it, as he doesn't do it any more!!!

I think I heard that Fulhams average age was on the high side and they managed it through extra play off games. Signing of these older players is a bit of a worry. But it seems our only recruitment strategy at the moment is Barb in admin checking the out of contract list. That strategy is going to inevitably take you down the ageing player route.

With Collins, Verlinden, Allen and McClean plus hopefully a quick right footed winger, it feels like a pretty well balanced and mobile squad and a physical one, we should dominate set pieces. Compared to last season, it seems quite a bit stronger and we were 7th under MON anyway. If the task is get promoted and stay within financial guidelines, this looks to be a decent attempt to achieve it
