Paul Scholes. Honourable mention to Nathan Dyer playing for Swansea a few years ago. He got subbed in the second half to chants of 'you dont know what you're doing' - might even have been Rodgers as manager. Masterclass in the sideways pass no doubt! Scholes?? Oh no... I remember how much time he seemed to have on the ball and was pinging passes all around the pitch time and time again. Everything went through him and we couldn’t cope or get near him... I was screaming at the Stoke players who just seemed to constantly back off as he put the fear of God into them... total class on the ball.

I thought Zaha when he first broke through for Crystal Palace was pretty special - he tore us apart in a cup match when he was about 17 I think? Strangely I saw Crystal Palace play in about 2012 when Zaha was making a name for hinself before his big transfer to Man Utd. Palace had a player on the other wing to Zaha, one Sean Scannell, who looked like he was going to be another big star. But Zaha's career went up, and Scannell's went down and I think he went through a succession of lower league clubs.

Ricardo Fuller for Preston at Preston. Tore whatever sham was defending for us to ribbons. He was outstanding wasn't he? Absolutely brilliant. I remember when we signed him on loan posting that if we get the Ricardo Fuller that played against us for Preston he would be a brilliant signing. Pretty sure he also scored against us and was brilliant whilst he was on loan at Ipswich as well.

Far too many to mention them all but undoubtedly the very best was Dennis Law scoring 4 against us just before he was banned. An amazing display of brilliance.

I remember Tuncay playing against us for MidBro. He stood out a mile and I said “ bloody hell hes good” The following season he was playing for us. In my opinion he was still as good and was criminally underused. Another terrible waste. Don’t know how true it is but I heard he enjoyed a fag after training, and you know who took exception to it.

At last, a post Covid thread which has inspired me to engage. Here are three old timer/obscure suggestions. Goalkeeper. Brian Arblaster, playing for Chesterfield in the league cup at he Vic. Seemingly unbeatable, and surely the next Banks. Brian who? 2 wingers. Paul Simpson at Derby ran riot as they slaughtered us. Around 5 down, this was the first time I heard. 'We're gonna win 6.5' from the faithful. We didn't. Joe Broadfoot. Who? Played for Ipswich as we beat them something like 9.1. Not only did he score their goal, the best, by running from inside his own half, but was the games outstanding player. While I was in exile in Swansea, Lua Lua, playing for Colchester, looked like the world's best player- for one day.

I remember watching Ruud Gullit play for Chelsea towards the end of his career. I vaguely recall we drew 0-0 and went on to win 1-0 on aggregate so it's hard to argue he stole the show but he was a privilege to watch, it looked like he was playing a different game to everyone else. Was the next one was going to mention. He was sublime that night. Was at the Euro final v Russia and he was incredible

Just a brief one...we were on the brink of signing a young Niall Quinn, well a deal was possible and he played v us in the FA Cup due to massive Arsenal injuries and of course had a great game, scored the winner and he forced himself into the first team. Am pretty sure was John Devine who was helping bring him to us

In those early Prem years for Stoke when Fergie was still in charge, between Scholes, Carrick and Rooney, his United team always came and put on a show. Amazingly we’d always give them a game but seem to lose last minute.
Matic during Mourinho’s second era is one that goes under the radar but he was everywhere.

I saw George Best play for Fulham at Stoke. Think Rodney Marsh was in the same team, but I may be imagining things there. He was way past his (own) best, was not fit but was on a different planet to everyone else on the pitch. Even the Fulham players could not read most of the passes he was making. He left one Stoke player on the floor without seeming to move at all - may just have shrugged his shoulders before laying off yet another slide rule pass. The speed of thought and range of passing was like nothing I had seen before or since. I lived through the Hudson years (best Stoke player I have seen live) but Best, even at this late stage was like Gulliver playing against Lilliputians.

Quite obscure, but I remember Hull City had a winger by the name of Leigh Jenkinson who ran us ragged twice in the 91/92 season. Luckily, his team mates were crap and we beat them 1-0 away. Unfortunately, a few months later they won 3-2 at the Vic and he scored two belters.

I think Biggins was suspended for the 2-3 game and Paul Barnes played. Ruel Fox for Norwich about the same time. We beat Norwich 2-1 in the League Cup, Bruce scored for them . Mick Mills tried to sign Fox afterwards.

More recently but Ebernichi Eze for QPR looks class and seems to have the beating of us each time he’s played. He will be a premier league player in the near future I’m sure.

Be honest - did you have to google his first name? You're spot on. Looks like a class act who glides across the pitch at times.

Ginola Newcastle in the 90s at the vic. Probably the first opposing player I saw get a standing ovation from Stoke fans( I think). He was brilliant . Ginola nearly caused a riot mate. His performance has certainly lived in the memory.

Seem to remember Quaresma making us look a bit shit. Wasn’t he the one who repeatedly kicked the ball out for a goal kick every time he got possession.

He’s been decent for a couple of seasons now and his progress looks very good. Not sure who to compare him to at the moment but a bit delli alli

Macari tried to sign Jenkinson but his bid was cheeky to say the least, namely a straight swap with Tony Kelly (the crap one).

I, like many on here have watched some fabulous players against us.
The standout performance for me though was Luis Suarez when Liverpool beat us 5-3. It was the best display from a front man I’ve ever seen.his workrate, running off the ball, finishing was something else. He made Shawcross and Huth look like conference defenders that day.

Edit...Bhutia I think.

I remember us making that Gypo winger from Barnsley look like Maradona a couple of times. curry was it?
One of my the best I have seen at the Brit was Stylian Petrov for Villa, think the game was second season it the prem, but he was fantastic. I also agree with the Drogba and Suarez, And would add Kevin De Bruyne
