This is no joke but Sonko when he was playing for Reading, he was incredible that day.
Gazza for Everton is another one that jumps out.

Matic had a great game for Chelsea at the Brit as well. I can't remember which year but he won absolutely everything and there was no way past him.

Andre Schurrle was ripping us a new one when we best Chelsea 3-2
Scored 2 crackers then the special one took him off and we won 3-2 with that Asiedi goal(still one of my favourites)

It pains me to say it but Jimmy Bullard when playing for Wigan at the Brit ran the show from start to finish. Also one of the Spurs home defeats where Modric was world class but that is no surprise.
The Arnie one mentioned previously probably hurt the most.

Paul Scholes. Honourable mention to Nathan Dyer playing for Swansea a few years ago. He got subbed in the second half to chants of 'you dont know what you're doing' - might even have been Rodgers as manager. Scholes and Modric are 2 of the best players I've ever seen play against us. Both were superb. I was also mightily impressed by Stilian Petrov for Villa. They weren't particularly impressive against us at any time, but he was always magnificent.

Seem to remember Yaya Toure absolutely running the show down here before. Yaya Toure is a funny one. I always got the impression that he didn't fancy it against the Pulis-era team, to the extent that he refused to play against us in the snow because he had a headache. Then again, he did score his (offside) goal to ruin the Cup Final.

A bit off topic , but can anyone remember a 0 -0 draw against Leicester played on snow at home. We played them off the park, almost the entire game was played in their half. They could not stand up,we could. Apparently Waddo carried out a master stroke on sending the players out with extra long studs. Hit the bar a few times but just could not score.

Was MOTD...the only game played that day. Should have won 4 or 5 As far as the boots go, the Hungarian team that lost to West Germany in the World Cup final they put down to the fact that the Germans wore the later to be Adidas boots. Hungary had beaten W Germany 6-1 think it was the week before.

I thought Zaha when he first broke through for Crystal Palace was pretty special - he tore us apart in a cup match when he was about 17 I think?

Banks in goal for Blackpool in that 3-1 win, he made save after save. Made one incredible save from Lightbourne.

Back in 1968-69 season the Nottingham Forest main stand burned down. Consequently Forest played their home games at Meadow Lane.https://www.nottinghampost.com/news/history/day-flames-ripped-through-nottingham-1895799 The Stoke away match against Forest is burned into my memory cells. The result of a great match on a very poor pitch was 3-3. Stoke took a 3 goal lead if my memory is correct and Forest clawed the game back. Forest could have won, but for a brilliant save by Banks, one of the best I ever saw. But the reason Forest saved the game was due to an absolutely brilliant performance by Joe Baker. He was a couple of stone over weight but the Stoke team could not contain him and he ran rings round us. It was undoubtedly one of the best performances I have ever witnessed. From memory, I recall it was also 'slim' Jim Baxter - the Scottish maestro who ran the midfield!

Drogba in those early Prem years. Had it all. We never really contained him.

Ginola Newcastle in the 90s at the vic. Probably the first opposing player I saw get a standing ovation from Stoke fans( I think). He was brilliant . He got dogs abuse! Ludicrous dive to get Clarkson sent off, utterly classless. He was clearly bemused by the wroth of the Stoke fans for the rest of the game and couldn't wait to get off the pitch. Peter Beardsley on the other hand was a class act, he got applauded by the Stoke fans I remember he got presented with a mountain bike in front of the Boothen End as man of the match. He was greeted with warm applause that turned into a chant of ‘There’s only one ugly Bastard’ 😁😂

My Dad always used to (still does) rave about Tony Currie’s displays against Stoke. I read that he beat a Stoke player then bowed to the crowd, then beat a second player before bowing to the crowd again. Probably uniquely amongst the 1970s Mavericks, he was a married man and lead a pretty much Non controversial life off the pitch.

Yep I'd of definitely said Modric was up there as one of the best opposing players I've seen in a match against us. Also stand out is Peter Thorne when he got his hat-trick for Cardiff v us. He was class for them that day like we knew he was & fact he was so respectful to us in the process made it a perfect example of a player stealing the show against us. To score a hat-trick against us & to get a standing ovation from the Stoke fans sums it up nicely.

Also got our full back, Clive Clark, sent off by cheating. Ginola was one of the first modern culprits alongside Klinsmann for diving and conning the ref. Utter arsehole never liked him.

I remember Tuncay playing against us for MidBro. He stood out a mile and I said “ bloody hell hes good”
The following season he was playing for us. In my opinion he was still as good and was criminally underused. Another terrible waste.

Van Dijk in Soton's 2-1 win at our place. He was fantastic Never realised how much of unit he was until that game. Nothing got passed him. Remember Charlie Adam having a cracker against us for Blackpool. Spraying his 50 yard passes all over the place.

Alan Hudson against Liverpool on his debut. Bill Shankly went into the dressing room afterwards to congratulate him. Saying that, Hudson was outstanding in a number of games. Outside Stoke I remember Man Utd playing West Brom at the Vic and George Best gave a masterclass.

I remember watching Ruud Gullit play for Chelsea towards the end of his career.
I vaguely recall we drew 0-0 and went on to win 1-0 on aggregate so it's hard to argue he stole the show but he was a privilege to watch, it looked like he was playing a different game to everyone else.

I remember us playing Wolves in the championship years ago and we beat them 3 - 0. The total stand out player was Steve Bull. He was at he end of his career, but his holdup play, running the channels and general effort was an example for any kid, or even any professional. He was excellent that day in an awful team.

I don't know about running the show, but the one opposition player who always looked a threat and made me nervous as soon as he had the ball was Cyrille Regis at West Brom.
