Just looked up that Shawcross is fast approaching 400 appearances for Stoke. With his length of service & dedication to Stoke & the fact he's seen some big highs mixed in with a few lows is Ryan our present day Denis Smith? I'm too young to have seen Denis play so cant compare the two directly as players but the fact both have spent the vast majority of their careers at Stoke & have very much made it their home, both being centre backs & both going through the pain barrier on numerous times for the club at spells during their time here are we close to seeing & accepting Ryan in the same level of awe as Denis is today by fans who both did & didnt see him? & whilst Ryan hasnt won a trophy at Stoke he did captain us to an FA Cup Final, throughout a satisfactory European campaign & was an instrumental part of our Promotion push. The write up on the match last night & the comments by Wade Elliot are suggesting that Ryan stepped up & offered to play last night by his own choice & that he wanted to throw himself into the u23 set up in an unpredictable match in unknown surroundings to get that next phase of his recovery completed. I'm guessing the vast majority would of been more than happy to wait for a behind closed doors match on a familiar & tidy pitch at Clayton Wood. Definitely think Ryan is a player that's been easy to take for granted over his time with us as he's been such a regular feature but when people step back & look at his career he's been a great & sometimes under appreciated/valued servant to SCFC. Ryan hasn't yet broken quite as many bones as Denis - his own and others. Denis was never dropped by any of his managers or himself, whereas Ryan was by both Rowett and Jones. On the other hand Denis had to wait a long time before he could lead the team out, while Ryan was already captain at 22 and will be again the day he is fit enough. We could compare them all day long, but both have been immensely important and popular for Stoke.

As always it's difficult to compare players from different eras. For example Smith wouldn't get away with some of the challenges he made today. As for never being dropped the squad was far smaller. As I remember it there were 13/14 first team players and the only reason a player didn't play was if he was injured. Even suspensions were rare and were dished out in weeks rather than matches. Both players are 2 of my all time favourites.

When you think about some of the pitches they played on and the fact that the challenges that were allowed in those days, it's a very different game as far as injuries are concerned. Smith had to play against some really hardcore forwards who weren't shy with their boots and elbows (Clarke, Lee, Osgood, MacDonald, Dougan etc) and mostly got away with it, as well as handing out his fair share of rough stuff when needed (and sometimes not!)

He definitely lost something, more so when he started having back problems. However he had a good renaissance last season (lower level of course) alongside Batth. That's why we got so many clean sheets under Jones (last season). looked like the old Shawcross Batth has been the poorer without him.

Is Harry Souter still on Stoke's books? If so I was wondering if he might be part of a general loan recall in January.

As pointed out above it is always difficult to compare players of different eras due to changes in the game. All you can do is compare players against their peers and what they and their team mates achieved. On that basis Shawcross and Smith have been great servants for Stoke but the best defender was Neil Franklin; played a record successive times for England when the selection committee would chop and change spreading caps around to "deserving players", played in the Stoke team that came nearest to being Champions, Hull offered a world record fee to sign him which was declined. Has anyone ever bid for Smith or Shawcross?
Franklin betrayed us in the end by quitting Stoke and England, but you could argue he was hounded out by McGrory, and there is no doubt that in his Stoke playing days he was peerless, and rated the best of his generation by the greats of the game.

Betrayed is a bit strong. He was trying to earn what he was worth, something he would never have been able to do in England due to the maximum wage. The fact he was ostracised when he failed abroad was to show an example to anyone else who dared to challenge the owners.

Why would we recall Souttar with the options we have at centre back, particularly if and when Ryan comes back in the next month?

Any idea on how Ryan came through last nights game yet? Came through unscathed. Joins full first team training on Thursday. Available for selection there after but think Blackburn is a game too soon. So Hull or Luton I’d say

Who do we drop then? I'd play Indi on the left hand of defence myself and Ryan alongside him, if he proves himself fit and ready, but you'd have thought he was a few weeks off yet.

Both centre halves looked shite on Saturday so both are up for dropping. Depends on the game and how they play I reckon.
