Single engine Piper two on board, so passenger and single pilot it sounds like. Pilot incapacitation? Think the air crash detectives will be poring over this. I've flown in a PA46 out of Sleap, it fairly bumps along at 5000 feet even on a Summer's day.....poor buggers... They have just confirmed on the BBC News Channel that the pilot requested landing permission for (I think) Jersey, just before the plane went off air. So possibly engine problems rather than pilot incapacity??? Pilot Incapacitation is the term used to describe the inability of a pilot, who is part of the operating crew, to carry out their normal duties because of the onset, during flight, of the effects of physiological factors. No CVR (Cockpit Voice Recorder) No FDR (Flight Data Recorder) on this so no way of saying whether, engine failure, weather episode or indeed pilot incapacitation caused this incident. Either way whoever decided that a longish flight, over water at night in a single-engine aircraft, with a single pilot, was a smart move, well that's going to make news in the coming days, irrespective of the fact the pax was a newly signed multi-million-pound footballer.

I lived in Nantes a couple of years back, the player in question, Sala, is an absolute hero to them. He's been their talisman for the last year and it's a real community club with strong links in the local area, a great club for a great city. He posted a few heartfelt messages to the club on his twitter a couple of days ago, posted photos with all the players. The local media back there seems to be talking about nothing else at the moment, what an utterly horrible thing indeed, not just for the club but the whole city and region

They were saying about commercial or private flight. Some sayimg if commercial it would have to be a twin engine plane. Incase one fails you have a chance with backup.

Been told this was a US registered 35 year old Malibu. Whoever strapped that poor kid into one of those on cold, wet Monday night over the channel, didn't think much of his welfare. There's a reason they were at 5000 feet, pilot hadn't got an instrument licence....(he needed to be visual with the ground or in this case the Sea).....stinks.

Good chance of critical probes getting iced up with the current atmospheric conditions too. Single-engine across the channel trying to maintain flight referencing Visual Flight Rules at night in this weather...nah thanks.

I’m not a qualified pilot but I would hazard a guess that the pilot was not licensed for night flying if he did not have an instrument license.

Don't get me started on these bloody planes. After my rant about the amount of high profile helicopter accidents on here a bit ago, and all the tit weasels on here who thought I was mad for having a go at these sportsmen and owners who keep putting themselves in these situations. A single engine plane!!! Seriously? You couldn't pay me to get in anything in the air with a single engine. Poor guy could have got an easy jet flight to Cardiff for about 40 quid. What starts off as sadness soon turns to anger for me. Here's still hoping for a miracle.

You can still fly by Visual Flight Rules at night. The suitability of doing so across the channel in these conditions though is very questionable.

This seriously doesn’t look good for Cardiff if they’ve chartered a flight in essentially an airborne washing machine.
They’re a Premiership side, fly the poor sod over first class.

Hate Cardiff. Have done for years and would normally rub my hands at any misfortune they encounter but rivalries are thrown at the window at times like this. Can some religious folk spare a prayer from me? Here's hoping there is some genuine miscommunication going on here and he and all aboard are safe and well. I am praying

Sadly very true. It is akin to a lawn mower with wings. The sought of aircraft that local flying clubs would take for a quick jaunt for an hour from a aerodrome.
Multi million footballer or Joe Public like me, I would not choose to fly to Cardiff from France in the middle Of January, across the channel like that.
Very sad news.

I’m fucking terrified of flying. This is why. It’s the almost definite nature of an accident isn’t it. “Safer than driving” some smart arse will tell you. Yes but percentage wise, you are far more likely to be a fatality in an aviation accident than a motor vehicle accident, Flying on a big bugger with, say, Flybe doesn’t bother me. But I’ve been in a small plane and a helicopter once, and both times felt very uneasy.

I only flew for the first time in 2017 at 23, and I could just about manage anywhere in Europe but further than that forget it. I was a sweaty, emotional wreck by the time the fucking thing finally landed.
