Rashford must start over Sterling. I have a bad feeling about it. The Swedes are shit but tall, physical, and frustrate the hell out of their opponents. Something Stoke fans are familiar with. I'll be shocked if it's not a snoozefest. Something else Stoke fans are familiar with Blame mark hughes

With 5 players on a yellow card I can't understand why we didn't just run with the ball towards the box against Colombia. We got away with it. Sweden are a rigid 4-4-2 who suck you in and hit with numbers on the break. Their shooting is trained by Diouf but against us every shot will be a worldy no doubt. Time for the driblers on this one they coped with half a dozen descent crosses from Shaq and looked like they could go on all night. Keep it on the floor and we will win. Cheek needs to start, rut at them from midfield and get them to commit themselves, they'll soon open up gaps.

This one should be very comfortable, England will be in the semi-finals of the World Cup without really playing at all in qualifying or the competition proper except for Belgium to whom we lost. I'm not complaining but its just bizarre Belgium didn’t mean much because both teams put out mostly their ‘B’ teams.

I think Sweden’s style could suit us more though it’ll be far from easy. Loftus Cheek and Rashford have to come in for Alli and Sterling as they’re too lightweight and just haven’t done enough. Just hope we’re not to jaded after playing ET.

Would have preferred the Swiss but at least we're there now 🤯 I think the Swiss were the better team against Sweden and that we'd have struggled against them. I think we'll do Sweden especially if we fuck Sterling and Lingard off. If Alli doesn't improve fitnesswise then he should be dropped too. Our midfield has too many runners who haven't got the brains or ability to cause real attacking damage.

Did I hear commentator say Walker was suspended for next game? He didnt get booked so he should play. Inside info: 😉 Just some voices According to the so called football experts (football Managers who knows J Andersson, National Coach) in the studio on TV, on the radio and elsewhere online here in Sweden: "Sweden has to attack against Walker, he's their weak link! It's unbelievable he's playing for them. We should get 1 or 2 goals there, just by showing up. He's amazingly slow." "When they took Sterling out, their whole play fell apart. He's their key man. If he's on he will tear our midfield apart. If together with Alli and Lingard, we must have a lot of luck to beat them. Boy, can he run!" "We were definitely the better team vs Switzerland and had all the chances and should have won it 3-0, but if Sterling plays it will be really difficult. Man of the Match by a mile for me, why they took him out is beyond logic. Maybe they just wanted to rest their best player."

Walker? Slow? Don't think so.
He is inexperienced (comparatively) in a back three and (like everyone) has a mistale in him but he's there by right for me.
Sterling is an odd one; you won't fond a bigger critic of him than me and he has got a woeful scoring ratio now and flatters to deceive for long periods but as mentioned, when he went off, we were suddenly all over the shop - and for me Vardy just wasn't working.
Replacing him with Rashford seems the obvious but again, when we have done that, we just don't look such a threat. Odd one.
So some pondering to be done there Gareth (& Steve, who I think does a lot of it anyway).
Sweden will be tough, yes, but we have a cracking chance now to progress.

Alli needs to be dropped for this one, he's been shite in the two games he's played so far - he's obviously not 100%, we're playing with 10 and a half men at times.

Sweden tactics: "Bore them to death", the football experts (two managers) said in the studio. Funny people. What do you think the score will be musik ? I think it will be close but I'm going 2-1 to England in the 90 minutes. 2-1 me too actually. Difficult one!

Sterling is a funny one. His end product has been appalling and he seems to be suffering from nerves in trying to force things. But we look way worse when he’s off the pitch, so it’s clear he is contributing by making runs and wanting the ball. Has to play for me, at least he starts things off for us. His runs make space, and after years of hopeless stodge we finally, finally have decent attacking movement... His team mates know this and manager knows this. Yet so many of our fans want to drop the player who is key to creating this fluidity. It should be baffling, but one of the joys of watching England is sitting with people who know fuck all about football and need someone to moan at. (Not at all like watching Stoke then!) Rashford is a raw talent and much better coming off the bench, especially in a game that can include extra time and penalties.

Im glad Southgate is our manager and not Stoke fans on a messageboard is all I can say! Sterling is literally the only player that runs at defences with the ball. Just because he doesnt score wonder goals does not make him ineffective Vardy looked fucking awful when he was up top next to Kane.

Alli needs to be dropped for this one, he's been shite in the two games he's played so far - he's obviously not 100%, we're playing with 10 and a half men at times. Make that 9 and a half as Sterling has added sod all to the performances so far. When we desperately need those 2 to be hitting form to supply Kane with space and chances, neither have really accomplised anything (at least Alli can blame his lack of full fitness though). I want RLC's power and strength in the middle as well against Sweden. Alli and/or Sterling will just spend their time rolling around as Sweden's bigger players will just let them bounce off them.

Agree with jurgen re Alli, and Loftus Cheek should be in for me. I'm just so glad we won that penalty shoot out, as those cheats would have finished with five or six players if I had been reffing. Bloody disgraceful over England's penalty!

People need to realise that no games are easy in the World Cup knockout stages. Every team pose different challenges. Our lads were nervous last night but held their nerve in the end. This is a HUGE chance to get into the semi finals. We have better players than Sweden, anything could happen but I believe we’ll just about scrape through (again)

Probably worth mentioning Sweden were in the same group as France & Holland in the qualifiers, beat Italy over two legs in the play offs and got out of a group with Germany and Mexico in it. They are many things, but easy certainly isn't one of them.
I too would shape differently though;
Pickford
Walker - Stones - Maguire
Trippier - Henderson - Loftus-Cheek - Young
Sterling
Rashford - Kane
We need to play between lines, make it difficult for them to set up. That mean getting the wide men forward more, and setting up with a three man attack with Sterling tasked with finding space and exploiting, rather than just playing up top with Kane.
We can beat these, but we need to think differently. Big challenge.
