A rather surreal low key encounter played at a slow pace that entirely suited England, after their exertions against cheating shyster latin Americans. Always looked like England would win it and i was surprised at the end, it was only two nil. So well done England - far further on now than I ever imagined and, cos its making people happy, long may it continue (I still think Ali and Rose are shithouses though) Are you giving a fuck yet, Tone?

Still ambivalent but it seems to be making people happy which is good. I cannot deny theyve done well But, ask me whether I'd want England to win the world cup or, Stoke City to be promoted next season and, theres absolutely no contest

Man of the Match? Maguire Pickford Sterling or Dele Still not convinced re Stirling. He’s very quick for sure but he lacks the final killer pass imo. There was one instance just before half time when a decent lay off would have given us a much better chance of 2-0 but instead he tried to batter himself past 2 defenders and skied his shot.

I was answering a post about Ali in general. I think so far he's had a poor World Cup; but he got injured in the first game, which meant he missed the second, and has not been 100% since. But today, although having a slow start, he had a good game. His goal was typical Dele, ghosting in at the far post. Look, I think Sterling has been shit, I can't understand why Southgate keeps starting him; plus I'd pick Danny Rose ahead of Young any day. But, he's (Southgate) the boss, the one in control. We have to trust his judgement (until it all goes tits up). Sterling was one of our most dangerous players today, Ali looks very poor playing in a deeper role. I thought Sterling pushed Trippier as MOM. I'm actually beginning to think the unthinkable, Southgate has produced a wonderful team that are flexible in different games. This group of players are also extremely likeable and this has added to the feel good factor (Oatcake message board excepted )

I think Sterling has been absolutely awful in every game so far. Likewise with Alli, and Lingard hasn't contributed much either although he put in a better performance today.

I think Sterling has been absolutely awful in every game so far. Really? The only thing he doesn't done yet is score, and I have no doubt that he'll bag at least one before the competition is finished. Goals aside, his sheer pace scares the living crap out of opposition defences and because of that he always drags two, three or four of them with him when he goes on a run. I'd have him in the team just for that.

Yes I know he's quick but he doesn't do anything with the ball when he manages to get anywhere near it. I know it's all about opinions but I think he's been woeful in his ball control, taking men on, passing, scoring attempts.

Totally owned the game didn't they? First 10-15 mins was a bit patchy but after that Ebgland really stepped up.
Not the most exciting but never really struggled after Maguire smashed the header in. Was a professional performance - loved it!
Ps - tonydreamtheater can sod off. Stop leaching you fat tart, this tournament meant nothing you. So don't try to jump aboard now.

Rashford may be slower but his awareness of players around him is streets ahead of Stirling.

Just about to jump on a plane so admin , save me a place on the oatcake trip to the final , on the basis I predicted it before a ball was kicked , be off in time to see who we meet in the semi , but we’ll stroll either , Gareth and the team even thinking of resting a few for that one .Buckingham palace knighood department on red alert by 5.00pm You heading back to Blighty then Benj. Be prepared it's hotter here than the Caribbean at the minute. Sadly not was heading out but I didn’t mind as I know I’ll be back for the final , predicted Belgium , but now I’d be happy to lose the bet as I’m 100% sure we’d thrash the French but 8nky 50% with Belgium .

Sterling is excellent at creating space for himself and teammates. However, he’s also indecisive and wasteful once he gets the ball.
He helps our attack greatly when he’s on the pitch because of his movement, but he could be so much better if he could just be more calm and decisive on the ball.
Good, but incredibly frustrating.

Still young. Like Platt in 1990 one crucial goal would transform perception of him.

Massive Stoke flag behind the goal when Alli scored the second. I don't know why but it makes me happy.

I'm going to stick up for Sterlo. I agree he's frustrating. The aforementioned frustration is exacerbated when you realise he fluffs at things he'd gleefully assert with a Man City shirt on. But for all that he's probably the only player in our squad who can carry the ball forward with pace and put opposition defences on the back foot. And let's face it, few England players have done that effectively for years. That counts for a lot.

Sterling missed the first as he knew he was off and VAR was probably his first thought.
The second one wasn’t that bad, he should have passed it though after he won the ball bavk?
Maybe he would at nil nil?
I think he’s been ok, the whole team are improving each game, it’s excellent to watch

Sterling's value is, he's the guy you would be laughed out of the pub for loosing* to him at darts or pool. He's the bowler who you're terrified of getting out to at cricket as he's that bad! Teams get nervous, as they don't want the indignation of him actually scoring against them, and it frees up space for others!
