Have to say I always tell my son when he asks me about football, that the most important players in a team are those who are consistent week in and week out. That's why I would always take a Shawcross (in prime) over a John Stones any day. One might be technically superior but only produces now and again or in Stones case fucks up regular.. Seen some debate on this board who our best player is and I would take a Joe Allen over a Shaq any day of the week. No debate for me and when you cant carry a flair player like we could not last season there better gone. yes hes worth more than 12 m in today's game but Joe Allen is a far more valuable asset.

Horses for causes, at this present time Joe, I really don't think that Shaq would do anything in the championship, he certainly will jot give you his all. But if we were a steady mid table prem club then shaq. That rare moment of class would ordanerially be just enough.

Good question. I'll come at it from a different angle. My days watching Stoke go back to the early 70's. In those days we had a winger called Terry Conroy. Terry was worth 10 Shaq's....Every game he played he was involved for 90 mins. Never moaned, never shirked - Just got on with it. Excellent servant to the club and still around now. Having said that I like Shaq, unfortunately there was never enough end product, that may be the fault of Hughes rather than Shaq. We will never know

It's not that difficult to find a Joe Allen.
It's really difficult to find a Shaqiri.
Shaqiri wins every time.

Shaqiri, it’s not even close ability wise.

Shaqiri, it’s not even close ability wise. But its not about ability its about aptitude and commitment.Joe applies himself nearly every game but Shaq occasionally. Over a season three is only one winner.

Have to say as well, as a winger hes way less effective than at 10. An inverted winger is not the best position to play Shaq. You really have to have a decent team for Shaq to turn up when he wants not in a bottom half team.

Shaq
Made things happen, but nobody to support him. He couldn't do it all on his own, though he came close.

According to Transfermarket Joe was 15.5 million Euros and Shaq 17.0 million Euros so they were similarly priced.
Joe can play a bit and willingly puts in the hard miles and has an unbelievable engine, Shaq can deliver that bit of x-factor magic but isn't massively interested in the other stuff.
I think in an ideal world you need both kinds of player.
In terms of the 46 match physical and mental endurance test that is the Championship if you had to decide who would deliver the most I'd bet on Joe.

Heard Talk Sport debating Shaq the other day and Michael Gray basically saying he can win games for you with his ability but lose then for you with his lack of application tracking back etc. Its just the level of inconsistency that puts off the bigger clubs not ability. High level performers with ability are a premium and hes only half the package. As pointed out we got away with it when Arnie was here but not since. Defo play him at 10 where ever he goes. I think hes very predictable as an inverted winger , lack of pace and rarely beats a man. Played out of position while at Stoke for me.

Shaq is clearly the more talented player; but
as Ramsay and Clough practiced, winning in football is about teamwork and Shaq is not a team player. Fergie would have bounced him out of any team of his with his ego tantrums. I believe he is the sort of character that splits a dressing room not unites it.

Joe Allen for next season in my book and what a statement that would be in helping Rowett to begin the rebuild. Seems like Laughing Gravy's whisper may have legs! - and the way to get round the legal part of paying some players 'more' to stay and not offering the incentive to 'the others' is to mutually agree to tear up the existing contract and agree a new one.

Agreed. In the Prem, Shaq - in the Champ, Joe (if he's prepared to venture a season as the best midfielder in the Champ it could make all the difference to us). And being pragmatic, even if his dodge contract (thanks for nothing it seems, yet again, Mr Cartwright) means we have to let Shaq go cheap we can pick up the next SJW and the next Glenn with the money, they'll serve us better in a promotion campaign, fingers crossed, and in the first battling season after promotion, fingers crossed harder. Also I think Rowett is the man to identify those new players.

I would go for Joe Allen, he will be more use this coming season for us. Shaq is fantastic and world class but not made for the league we are now in. Allen can scrap in any division.

Joe Allen
Shaq wouldn’t even contemplate playing in the Championship. (Still a class player in his day though)

Allen is a talented grafter
Shaq puts bums on seats, or more precisely gets them off them
Shaq is a luxury player, which we don't need, can't afford and won't fit in the championship
So although I'd rather watch Shaq, in our present situation I think Allen would be better for the team

If the reports are true that Allen wants to stay and Shaqiri wants out tells you the answer right there.
Shaqiri was part of the team that got us relegated. Allen looks at this, rightly or wrongly, that he personally needs to deliver on his contract and not leave
Says a lot for me.

Joe Allen Of course he still may decide to leave but has indicated that he would be up for being part of an immediate return to the Premiership, if the club show the commitment and ambition to create a squad to be promoted Over to you Stoke
