Craig Charles would get my vote - however I think he only has time for standins-specials, but you'd well imagine it could be Mayo, if they don't need to box-tick. Mayo's drivetime show has descending into a steaming pile of poo, having two DJs trying to chirp in with their comment isn't working at all. And what I perceive to be Wylie's Music choice is like listening to someone's 9 year old daughter pick the records. Craig Charles is up there as one of my favourites. But, although I love his soul and funk style, it may not be diverse enough for the powers that be on R2, particularly for a daily prime time slot. He certainly ventured out of that box when he was asked to, and was quite happy with that.

Charles is a bit too soul/funky for daytime radio IMO (not my musical taste either). I think Mayo would be best to replace Evans but who knows what weird and wonderful ideas the R2 head honcho is having.

So the General feeling appears to be daytime Radio 2 should be split between Ken Bruce 9:30 - 15:00 with Simon Mayo 6:30 - 9:30 a few hours off then 15:00 -19:00 sounds fine to me.

Looks like Mayo could be jumping ship soon and going to Smooth when it goes national. Can't say that I blame him one bit. I'll certainly be re tuning. All this 'gender imbalance' crap has gone too far.

I agree, can't blame him. I see Zoe Ball has got the breakfast show from Chris Evans, not too bad and at least it's not Wylie !

All this 'gender imbalance' crap has gone too far. I hope not. Sadly the the new PC run bbc radio may drive him off. Ideally they should give him his own show back. For me i do not seem to last more than 3 records on Smooth as it is so bland and I would rather Mayo can have input on a show.

Can't blame Mayo for going but like you I'd have preferred the Beeb to ditch Wylie and give him his own show back again. Looks like subtle (or none too subtle) elbowing to the exit door by the Beeb.

Mayo and Whiley both gone from drivetime then. He'll be broadcasting from elsewhere and the suits are finding a slot for her somewhere in the schedule. Should have done that in the first place.

Mayo on Wiley
"I've loved working with the exceptional Jo Whiley and when the show was 'reconfigured ' she was my first and only choice
"Some of the abuse she has had here has been appalling. Support for a show is one thing, assaulting the dignity of a warm-hearted and loyal friend is another.
"So by all means discuss what's happening here, but let's keep some civility. Thank you. Here endeth the lesson."
I think the above comments are aimed at you lot

Haven't got anything personal against the woman just don't like her style. Parachuting her into Mayo's programme while knowing full well that she wasn't going to stay there seems bizarre at best. All in the name of political correctness. If the suits keep wrecking the daytime schedule at this rate the listening figures will be in single numbers before long. Sure as hell won't be tuning in to Zoe Ball either.

Don't really get where you're coming from here. Myself and several others on here have certainly criticised Jo Whiley's input and her presentation style in Simon Mayo's show but to my knowledge there hasn't been any "abuse", nor have I (we) "assaulted the dignity" as it's been described. I don't see why the Beeb felt it necessary to make the change to what was a well-liked programme and it's very well liked presenter. It's quite evident from Simon Mayo feeling the need to post such a statement that there are many people who were not particularly happy with the changes - dinosaurs or not. It's all about opinions isn't it - yourself and countless others are quite happy with the above, whereas myself and countless others are not. The Beeb's meddling with perfectly good programmes has certainly lost them some listeners.

If you want me to be serious I would suggest that one of the issues with Wiley being thrown around on here and beyond is the fact that she's a woman. The hard fact for me and others is that her old show was by a country mile the best offering on Radio 2 and that's effectively what she will be going back to. She was completely wasted being paired with Simon Mayo who left music behind a long time ago. He would be better placed on Radio 5 although his show with Commode is just about the most self-satisfied, pompous effort I think I've ever experienced on radio.

Much as I loved Simon Mayo on Drivetime & Jo Whiley on her later show, the two of them together didn't work. No slur on either of them, they just weren't the right pair to partner a show. Something like an anchovy & peanut butter sandwich. Marvellous on their own, but together? Er, no.
Who will do the new drivetime slot? Dunno, I'll give it a listen whoever it is. Unless it's that smug b3ll end who's been doing the breakfast show for a few years.
Had a drive down to Cardiff & back last Thurs & Fri evenings. Gave up on R2, R5 was being a bit dull, so was R4. Wouldn't even consider R1. Planet Rock was about the only half decent station I could find but after half an hour of incessant adverts, that was too much for me so I went dial spinning.
Found a station called Union Jack. I was admittedly prepared to switch straight over, half-expecting some talk radio r4cist bile. But I was more than pleasantly surprised.
Solely music radio, no talking bollox. In fact, not only no talking bollox, no dj at all. Back to back music. No interviews, no pre-recorded fillers, no inane phone-ins. Just solid music.
The station is so-called because they only play British music. Mostly 80's & 90's, a smattering of 60's, 70's & this millennium. Largely who you'd expect re bands but generally not their biggest hits. E.g. Beatles - Revolution, XTC - Sgt. Rock
And to put the icing on the cake, only 1 short advert every half hour. Bloody marvellous it was. Whatever track they were playing, you could pretty much guarantee you were only 1 or two tracks away from something really good. It was about the only thing that stopped me going mental during the interminable 6.5 hour drive back. I shall be seeking it out again next time I drive something with a DAB radio in.

Get your therapy sessions booked lads
"The opportunity to present such a big show as Drivetime - playing fantastic music and hopefully making people smile as they cook tea or head home after a day's graft - is the icing on what is already a very brilliant cake.
"I'm beyond chuffed to be given this role."
Well beyond Chuffed I would imagine

Just to redress the balance a bit after complaining about R2 recently.
Last Monday I happened to switch on during the Ken Bruce show and Mark Goodier was standing in for him. I thought he did a great job and was so much better than Trevor Nelson when he's stood in for Bruce. I enjoyed listening to him last week. Hopefully the Beeb will stick to this instead of Nelson for future Bruce holiday periods.
