Me thinks the OP has over-imbibed on lemonade or other similar beverage. No Peter Coates then no Stoke City FC, as he and his family stepped in when needed. As for the Scholes and Cartwright positions, I don't know sufficient to pass any meaningful comment. I don't agree with the no Peter Coates then no Stoke City FC line. We would still exist without Coates maybe wouldn't have reached the Premier League as soon but don't forget he was part of the problem in reaching the third tier of English football. He may have redeemed himself but lets not get carried away! Perhaps you forget about the financial black hole that the previous owners created that the Coates family filled and supported the club ensuring survival. Perhaps the alternative AFC Stoke City is what you envisaged.

We are paying the price for not getting rid of Hughes earlier - of course he should never have been brought in in the first place. Coates has amply funded the playing side of things, there is no question that we should be where we are given the outlay compared to teams who are above us.

Get the the blinkers off we had three top half finishes, the best run ever in the clubs history, and were within a whisker of getting to a cup final. Yes the wheels did eventually come off and we look like paying a heavy price for not acting sooner in replacing Hughes but to say he should never have been brought in in the first place is simply ridiculous.

Totally dont think Coates deserves any abuse. Hes a good chairman and Stoke fan through and through.
I would however point out a couple of areas he should look at himself in regards to MODERN football chairmanship.
1) Too loyal to managers. In general I praise him for his loyalty, but its got us in trouble now. He nearly left it too long with Pulis and DEFINITELY left it too long with Hughes. There are other hire & fire chairman out there who love change just for the sake of it. I dont want Coates to go down that route but at the end of day he should put the clubs future before the relationship he has with the manager.
2) Not hiring foreign managers. This is really becoming a bugbear now for Stoke. The talent pool of British/Irish managers has been shrinking for years and Coates is ruling out some good candidates because they dont have prior Prem experience. He was only just willing to go for QSF (because he had been manager at Watford before), before running back to Martin O'Niell and finally Paul Lambert. I still think Coates would NEVER hire a foriegn manager without Prem experience which is just foolish, and cutting your nose off to spite your face. There are plenty of foreign coaches that do well in the first Prem job.
I think the other points thrown at Uncle Peter are pretty much unfounded. He has talked about self-sufficiency many times, but has NEVER shied away from spending big bucks on the players that a manager wanted. I also wouldnt call him complacent about our position in the Prem. This has come about due to monumentally bad transfer decisions, and a general malaise on the coaching side of things. Coates has always been a stand-off kind of chairman and let the manager run the team how he sees fit.
Scholes is just a bean-counter at the end of the day, who is way overpaid for what he does. He is clearly a very shit negotiator and so should be replaced. But lets not pretend hes a real CEO and has any real power at the club. But just his record on failed player & manager contract negotiations should be enough to see him out the door.
Peter Coates - move with the times a bit more fella Scholes - Just get fired

Now I’m not condemning this but if we lose Monday we are almost certainly down if not already. The atmosphere will be interesting to see what reaction Coates and the board get. Personally I hold the board and Coates equally responsible if not more responsible for the position we are in. Lack of signings and poor recruitment has resulted in this situation as well as other managerial decisions. I kind of hope they do receive some abuse seeing as Hughes got a lot of flack but for some reason the above have gone under the radar!. Bored of hearing Coates excuses regarding luck. It’s about time he come out and say we fucked up!! Why use the word “abuse” in your post title? Hopefully not to incite abuse from within the ground or via social media. Constructive criticism and searching questions on mass is absolutely the right way to raise the profile of our inadequencies. Abuse is easily defended and becomes a tool to deflect criticism through the media I could edit the post and change it to critism but either way if a set of fans sing songs against the board/ chairman before the end of the season it’s classed as abuse in some form. I’m not encouraging anything but I would be be amazed if they dont receive any critism/ abuse from the stands as they are equally to blame. Bored of people staring what Coates has done. He has constantly made excuses for this season and sacking Hughes at the time he did was criminal! Not saying I think he should step down but he deserves some back slash when we go down.

I dont think Coates should get any abuse, after all without him where would the club be. However ultimately the buck stops with him and he has ok'd some of the recent dealings. Any abuse needs to be channeled towards the imbeciles who have fronted up these deals, and hopefully if Scholes and Cartwright were rightfully hounded, the Stoke fan in Coates would see the light and remove them swiftly.

Perhaps you forget about the financial black hole that the previous owners created that the Coates family filled and supported the club ensuring survival. Perhaps the alternative AFC Stoke City is what you envisaged. Can you enlighten me of this financial black hole? I cannot recall these massive debts incurred by the Icelandic Board, I can't remember this finanial abyss ready to fold the club that you seem to recollect. Peter was still a Golden Share holder on the board with the Icelanders and a lot of debt the club had was existing from his move to the Britannia Stadium. A funding mishap due to not ensuring funding from EU was a major factor for debts creating a shortfall whilst trying to pay for the new stadium, if I remember correctly but my memory is getting on a bit now 20 years down the line. A lot of the clubs debts were carried over from the previous boards tenure where it was being run on a shoestring. I appreciate what Peter has achieved but "no Peter Coates no Stoke City" is simply not true and we were nowhere near an AFC Stoke City. We were led to believe Stan Clarke was going to help bankroll the club but all he wanted was the land and to drive forward the Trentham Lakes development. If Peter Coates filled a financial void he was partly responsible for it!

Where have I said Coates Out! I am disagreeing with the statement no Peter Coates no Stoke City! I hate revisionist statements that seem to quickly revise the past and create Peter the Saviour when he was also the Villain! A sharp decline in Stoke City's history was under his first tenure. The Icelandic board got us back out of the third tier and luckily Peter made a fortune with his betting business and decided to take it on again. We were already floundering in the third tier after his first stint as chairman so I don't get your point.

Cold light of day. SCFC is a business, Coates treats it like a business. He always has, in his first time at the club it supported his "stadium catering" business supplying most of the catering to the premier league also supporting his in stadia bookies. It is no different today with bet365, he is chairman of the company and is therefore responsible for the running of the company, appointment of its officers, budgets etc etc. I am passionate as most supporters are but it is a business to the board.Make your own mind up.

Coates shouldn't get abuse. But he does deserve criticism. Unfortunately Bayern, I feel that some people don't know the difference between abuse & criticism. I had the pleasure approximately one year ago to meet Peter Coates face to face. His passion for Stoke City is beyond any doubt & I'm sure that he's feeling as much pain (if not more) than the rest of us right now. The only criticism I could possibly level at Peter Coates is his loyality & trust in officials at the club who should have been removed sooner, or are yet to be sacked.

Strange isn't it, because within football its his trust and loyalty that everyone admires. I agree with every word. its the social media generation, I wonder if some of the bile directed at him on here would be there if these people were to meet him face to face. I suspect not.
