I believe without arnie, for the last 2/3 seasons, we would been relegated along time ago, and after him leaving, shaqiri this season, we would be rock bottom of the premier league. These guys have absolutely carried us for years and its so obvious to see.
Were such a poorer team without Arnie, and after leaving, if shaqiri does not pull a wonder goal out of his arse, we just can't score.
In my opinion this is all down to Hughes and his cronies, who constantly signed below par players for silly amounts of money and not ensuring we have positions covered where we need too.
When Hughes signed Chopper, on a free, he told us this was the 'replacement for arnie'. The guy is never premier league standard, and that is so obvious, what did they expect when we sold arnie for £20M and then replace him with a freebie.
The reason we had to get a freebie was because Hughes had spent so many millions on absolute wasters they had to use Arnie's money to cover the likes of Imbula/wimmer or Berahino.
Call it 3 ninth place finishes, call it whatever you like.
Mark Hughes has absolutely ruined stoke city from top to bottom. An absolute fraud.

I don't agree with most of that, However, I do staunchly agree that Arnie was carrying the team for 3 seasons. He covered Hughes's arse many times. Secondly, I agree that Hughes has single handedly ruined this team with the support of Peter Coates and Fat boy Cartwright.

The OP is full of contradictions. He rightly praises Arnie and Shaqiri but both were Mark Hughes signings so to say that Mark Hughes has ruined this football club is just hysteria. Signing Arnie for 3M will go down as one of the best signings in our history. We will also end up making profits on Shaqiri and Allen. Fair enough we can lay the blame for Imbula , Wimmer and Berahino at Hughes door but even so, with the money we recouped from the sale of Arnie that is still only about 28M. If we are saying that we can't afford to sign players after spending 28M then serious questions need to be asked of the board, who have banked hundreds of millions from successive TV deals. Hughes undoubtedly made mistakes as all football managers do but our present situation is much more down to our boards complacency than anything else.

So Hughes was a very good con man & they believed everything he told them or the Coates family are not very clever after all & have been incredibly lucky with there gambling empire.

My own feeling is that MH is fine when things are going are well. He has always worked in successful environments but at the first hint of failure he's like a rabbit in headlights. He doesn't know what failure is and how to deal with it. Don't we have to give him some credit for bringing in Shaqiri and Arnie??? He'll still go down as our most successful manager in our Premiership history. But agreed he, along with his team, fucked it up big time.

Hughes got scared at the start of last season.
We stopped playing football and went back to the 'safety' of old plodders, so-called 'ard workers' and a poor imitation of hoofball.
That's what ruined us. We're still scared of playing football now and it shows hugely.
We'd probably be better off with Arnie right now, but any team is worse off if you remove their best player.

Hughes undoubtedly made mistakes as all football managers do but our present situation is much more down to our boards complacency than anything else. Paint it whichever way you like, Hughes couldn't even be arsed to keep his players fit in the end. You have our 13M buffoon of a striker's agent complaining he's a stone overweight. It was clearly a fucking holiday camp dwon there in the end and the legacy of three ninth placed finishes is all but washed way on a tide of 4 and 5 goal hammering's and absurdly bad big money buys.

I can only assume that peak fitness of the players was not high on MH's agenda. Perhaps he preferred to concentrate on coaching football skills rather than running up hills?

Good point but you're not beyond contradictions yourself. You claim the board have made hundreds of millions from TV deals. The money has entered our books but they didn't just pocket it themselves. The majority goes into the running of the club, which these days include the excessive wages we pay for fear of not being able to hold to on to our players or not being able to attract new ones. The biggest earners at the club are Berahino and Wimmer, both players who are not deemed good enough by fans and manager alike. That's no way to run a club.

Hughes management became muddled and unclear in the last season or two. He lost what vision he arrived with and the board were highly complicit in the drastic decline that ensued. It seems to me that there's a skill involved in knowing when a manager has tipped over the hill and requires replacing........ a skill that was sadly lacking in respect to Hughes. The same applies to Arsenal with Wenger ( ) Sometimes loyalty can have a severe and negative impact on a club's fortunes and that's where we've ended up, unfortunately.
