Just writing the next article in the 'Greatest of All Time' series I started in yesterday's Oatcake. Full backs I've got on the shortlist for the RB and LB spots are Bob McGrory, Jackie Marsh, Billy Mould, Lee Dixon, Tony Allen, John McCue, Mike Pejic and Andy Griffin. I've seen Dixon and Griffin with my own eyes, watched a few videos of Marsh and Pejic, but if anyone has anything to say about any of these players and wouldn't mind their words being used in print, please feel free to add a comment and argue for/against their inclusion. Are there any other full-backs who deserve a mention? (the early 80s are a bit of a blind spot for me- what were Ray Evans and Peter Hampton like?) And before anybody says it, no I don't think Moritz Bauer's 2 appearances qualify him for inclusion!

Allen and then Pejic and Marsh were very good solid full backs.
It was a different game in those days but I would say that in their prime they could play in today’s team.

Probably an era thing but Butler and Sandford. They made up that incredible back line in the early 90's with Vinnie and Cranson. Like I say, it was when I started my wonderful journey with this club, but I thought they were fantastic, quite the unsung heroes. Sent from my SM-G955F using proboards

Mikael Hansson's brief spell was entertaining. Maybe not the best but definitely the quickest.

In my time watching we’ve only really had one top quality full back - Mike Pejic. Lee Dixon obviously developed into one but not while he was with us. It’s always been a position where we have picked players up at the tail end of their career, had a few promising youngsters who moved on, or have shoe horned players in who really should have been playing at centre half.

Are Pejic and Allen the only FB players we have had who played for England?
Allen did it when we were in the old 2nd Division which shows how good he was at a young age. Pejic was picked by Ramsay, which speaks volumes.

Well, if we're not including Bauer, the vote's a farce! Two words. Marcus. Hall. In all seriousness, got to think Marsh and Pejic will stroll it, with honourable, nostalgic mentions of Butler and Sandford for people of a certain vintage!

Can't believe no-one has mentioned the dubiously fuelled (allegedly) Rolls Royce that was John Halls.
PS Pejic for me of those I've seen live (or half dead in some cases).

Lee Dixon should be no where near this list. He only played a couple of seasons and wasn’t very good. Charlie Scrimshaw should be added to your list for the reason that my old man would always use him when comparing the likes of Pej and Jackie Marsh. He must have been good,

Micky Pejic and Jackie Marsh are the stand-out ones. Both were top class and both were uncompromising and both would be in my all-time Stoke 11. Lee Dixon would be a close runner to these two but as someone has said above, his best days were when he left us. Lee Sandford was good too. I also liked Hoefkens but his time here was spoilt because Pulis often played him at centre-half... a position that was not his best. He was at his best as a wing back, but Pulis detested wing backs.
And now we have Jack Bauer. He reminds me of Lee Dixon during his time with us. He's an exciting player with a great future methinks.
OS.

I think you have made a mistake putting Griffin on that list Trousers. He is miles from the quality of the rest.

I always remember Lee Sandford's performance against Andrey Kanchelskis in the League Cup. Superb on the night.
