Cliff Carr Derek Statham Ibrahim sonko Darn it! I was gonna say Cliff Carr. Such fond memories of him receiving a roll out from the keeper, running 20 yards at a 45 degree angle towards the touchline, looking up and smashing a 40 yard left foot slice straight into the paddock. And repeat.

John Marsh and Mike Pejic
No competition from 1970 onwards
No-one could get around Pejic, it just didn't happen!

Mike Pejic, Dixon didn't have that many games for Stoke, the next one will be Bauer.

While technically not the greatest footballer mentioned in the thread, surely Higgingbotham's free kick against West Ham to send us to Wembley is one of the 'greatest moments a Stoke fullback has produced?

I think you have made a mistake putting Griffin on that list Trousers. He is miles from the quality of the rest. Got to reach the word count somehow! ??? Some of the 'hilarious' suggestions on this thread show how short of quality full-backs we've been- particularly in recent years. Butler and Sandford, Hansson too, were all probably good Championship-level players who looked better than they were, playing a division below their true ability. I considered Danny Higginbotham and Andy Wilkinson for the great job they did in 08/09 but other than those two I'm really struggling in recent years.

It’s never been a strength - Ray Evans etc etc. We even tried to ruin Stevie Bould’s career with it !!

Jack Marsh and Pejic have been miles away the best full backs I’ve seen at Stoke. Griff looked quality in his early days hence the big money moves that saw his best days. The only other one to come close imo was Glenn Johnson in his first season when he looked like a Rolls Royce of a player.

Tony Allen is probably the only one that can 'live' alongside Marsh and Pejic...if you do include Jackie you will need a good supply of contact lenses

Fullbacks - IMO Marsh and Pejic I remember telling my Dad a Derby County fan after i got back from that game when we played Middlesborough at Vale Park, that Mike Pejic did such a great run down the wing it brought the house down with applause, my Dad's response was, was he taking Tommy Cooper off

In my lifetime, it has to be Pejic and Marsh, great tacklers and quick so they could both overlap and put it in a good cross. They were basically wing backs (Waddo was way ahead of his time).

Whilst Marshy and Pej were probably the best pair playing together at stoke, a mention must go to CALVIN PALMER, who was known in the 60's as a 'Utility' player and filled many positions. Around 1965 he slotted in as an attacking right back with great success, and in the magazine FOOTBALL LEAGUE REVIEW (included free inside match day programmes) was rated second only to George Cohen - our England World Cup winning right back.

Diouf... On a serious note, Hoefkens was a step above us when he played. Griffin was brilliant at the time. Clive Clarke was good......... At blaming everyone but himself

Obviously Jackie Marsh and Pej. We haven't had a wealth of quality at full back, mentions for Griff, Mickey Adams, Butler was a good servant as was Sandford though he never saw himself as a full back. Strange we've always done far better with Centre Halves.
