Listening to the travel news on the radio this week it seems there's been problems with long tailbacks due to accidents or breakdowns between J16 to J20 almost everyday this week. Even without the seemingly never ending roadworks It must be the worst stretch of motorway in the entire country.

One of the main reasons I’ve not renewed my season card.
Half of the time a one and a half hour journey turns int three or more hours

Was reading earlier, the roadworks between Stoke and Stafford are to finish 6 months ahead of schedule and the 4 lanes each way running will be from September this year. Still taken 3 1/2 years though, lets hope they don't start between jct 15 & 16 as that stretch hasn't been done yet, and just leave it until I retire

Less CO2, less mileage, less damage to the network, fewer roadworks, less cost to the taxpayer...

I think a lot more will be doing it, some may need to go to work on some days for better productivity and mental health, and obviously some jobs can't be done from home, like an airline pilot

Not sure what the public’s confidence would be tho.

I've done 3,000 car miles in the last 12 months, usually do about 12,000, walked loads more, polluted the atmosphere less (I don't mean personally!), supported my local village shops and businesses more...what's not to like? Of course you're right that some jobs can't be done from home, but lots can and it seems such a quick win on so many levels.

Amazingly he’s only got a sore back. He said it was the lorry driver reacting to the traffic too late and jackknifing. Ironically my brother is also a lorry driver.

Im not one to speculate but it looks like that part of M6 is closed all night for repairs due to accident.
So id imagine the Lorry driver if at fault will get a due care and attention charge.

I drove past it early afternoon going south and could see the top of the car had been completely cut off, and was covered in sheets, so assumed the worst.

I got caught in the aftermath of all this today. I was driving back from a day of work in South Wales and was having a really good journey until I reached the M6. I got off at junction 12 and made way way back to ‘Castle. I do 1000 miles a week in my job all over the UK and I can honestly say that the M6 is worst road of the lot. Too many people drive like knobs and many just don’t have any driving skills…they drive way too fast and don’t anticipate anything ahead of them…basically they should not be on the road. I honestly think everyone should retake their driving test every 5 years…I think you would be shocked by how many would fail.

I honestly think everyone should retake their driving test every 5 years…I think you would be shocked by how many would fail. I agree there should be retakes. I’d also add that there should be a motorway element to the retakes, as learners are not allowed on motorways. (or they weren’t when I passed 13 years ago) That felt bizarre to me even when I was learning. It felt like the most intimidating aspect of driving to me before I did it and I think an instructor should be teaching people how to do it properly. It wasn’t until I drove family to a holiday that I was instructed about staying as far left as possible and all the nuances. But given the way a scary proportion of people drive on m-roads it seems they never had that basic correction, nor the common sense to improve with experience. Fortunately I don’t drive much these days. The occasional airport run and mostly at night. I find it staggering just how many cars have 0 awareness of how to use lanes on motorways. If some dickhead is cruising in the 3rd lane with the 2nd (and sometimes 1st) free then it might not seem a big deal to people who don’t have a clue, but in reality it forces people who want to overtake to switch more lanes than they need to. I don’t know the stats but I’d assume that lane switching is one of the most dangerous manoeuvres on a motorway. There was some rumbling a few years ago about the police cracking down on it. I think an article of a small van driver who stayed in the wrong lane for an entire journey and got fined was doing the rounds. It provided a good insight into the mentality of the ignorant bellend as they were bleating to the papers that they had somehow been unfairly treated and still couldn’t wrap their head around the fact that they had done wrong. It was staggering TBH, but being a person of reasonable intelligence and becoming a motorist will quickly teach you that the majority of people are dumb and/or inconsiderate. It’s depressing but true. I think it was George Carlin who said that “imagine how dumb the average person is, now consider that 50% are even dumber than that”. Scary that most of these people operate potentially lethal machinery.

Scary that most of these people operate potentially lethal machinery. If you follow NW motorway police on media, its scary how many cars, vans etc and their drivers are illegal and they do regularly issue tickets for Lane hogging, not nearly enough though. A license should have 2 parts, 2nd for motorway driving, put all my kids through motorway driving lessons as soon as they'd past their test, I did the same after mine back in the 80s
