Yep, had to cut across country again for my weekly Monday morning meeting in Coventry. I was half an hour late. Closed southbound between Jn 14 and 12. Hope no-one was hurt.

When queues of artics start turning up between Holmes Chapel and Talke you know something has obviously gone wrong.

It always had to be paid in cash, and he preferred it slid to him in a plain brown envelope when no-one was looking. (Ask Okie.) Ambo used to say that the £30 went towards maintenance of the Fegg swamp, final resting place of any Valeites he caught trespassing in the vicinity. I miss Ambo. And that old spittoon.......

Driven over a million miles mostly on the M6 over the last 30 years in an estate car of some variant and glad I've opted for an automatic. Beggars belief they use the word 'Smart' with anything associated with the M6 as that it will never be. The smart thing to do is as folk have already said....not use it. Cant see it ever improving without less traffic more lanes and somehow changing work ethic to safety first.

There's just too much traffic at almost any time of day. Before I took early retirement 3 years ago I used to travel all over the country for work and sometimes left home at 3.30-4.00am and even at that time there were literally hundreds and hundreds of trucks and loads of overnight road works. Many a time there were queues of three lanes down to two and then into one lane which caused quite a few bottlenecks.
I can only see it getting even worse in future.

The Solution is, just do not drive so fast..and as my Dad says, stay in the near side lane as that will be quicker.

The opportunity to maintain the national speed on the M6 is something of a rarity. If you choose to use the nearside lane you're invariably entered into the lorry lottery in which the element of danger increases to such an extent your bullied into using other lanes.

You are also effectively boxed in by the large number of trucks using the middle lane travelling at about the same speed as those using the left hand lane making it difficult and dangerous to try to get into the middle lane.

Where the system is up and running around Birmingham it all seems to be working, assuming everyone just sticks to the speed indicated by the overhead signals. Keep a responsible distance from the vehicle in front of you and it works. Unfortunately there's always a cretin out there.

The 'cretin' ratio is large enough to create daily misery whether North or Southbound 365 unfortunately.

I agree - it's okay for people to say stick to the speed limit but when you're doing 50 mph in the road works section where the limit is 50 mph, and there's an artic about 5 yards from your rear bumper flashing it's lights and hooting at you to get out of the way early it's a tad intimidating to say the least, particularly at 3 or 4.00 am. The inside lane is usually solid with trucks, and you're already doing the max speed in the middle lane, and you can't get into the outside lane due to cars and white van man, there's almost no alternative but to increase your speed. This leads to the concertina effect where a vehicle ahead suddenly brakes, causing the whole lot to brake and slow down and eventually causes the tailbacks.

It used to happen all over the country - I used to frequently make early starts to meet customers at designated times and places but countless times night-time motorway closures caused tailbacks and threw my whole day's appointments out of sync.
I experienced loads of occasions where trucks were nose to tail on both the inside and middle lanes with white van man hurtling down the outside lane at stupid speeds. Several times when I was just trying to join the motorway I almost got wiped out by trucks behind me on the slip road not wanting to stop and almost forcing me onto the inside lane into the path of trucks who didn't want to give way. Scary sometimes.

This leads to the concertina effect where a vehicle ahead suddenly brakes, causing the whole lot to brake and slow down and eventually causes the tailbacks. HGV's and coaches have their speeds accurately calibrated for tachograph purposes but our cars don't. So when the car tells you it's going at 50mph you're actually going at 47. Hence the heavy stuff getting up close and personal. It still doesn't excuse the clowns for thinking that they own the road.
