3 - better defence, which wasn't our biggest problem, midfield bit of a muchness, and forwards not improved at all. I'm assuming the deals we were after didn't come off. Can't believe the transfer team believed everything was OK. defence wasn't our biggest problem, wow ? I must have been dreaming about the 6 or 7 times we got 4 stuffed past us last season and the highest number of goals conceded in a season since we got promoted It wasn't our biggest problem because when we weren't getting stuffed the defence conceded few goals and kept a respectable number of clean sheets. Whereas we slid back to scoring a worryingly low number of goals, something that has been a problem for us for our entire stay in the Prem.We haven't broke the 50 goal mark in any of our 9 seasons so far. To maximise your points haul you need to win more games and draw less which is what we saw in Hughes first 2 seasons. Since then he's become more conservative and pragmatic we've slipped back to Pulis levels of goals scored which has seen us win less games and draw more. Its not the way to maximise your points or position and its pretty boring to boot.

It's been a good window for me - so maybe a 7 - but as others have said the centre mid is a real worry. Getting overrun in midfield last season didn't help us along to the way to those 4-0s. We're two injuries away from an Adam and Cameron midfield ...

who are the full backs that have been converted to wing backs that are not lacking at this level then? Edit: Also Kuyt was a great wing back for Holland. And I forgot Ashley Young. Ashley Young isn't a good wing back. Van Gaal was only using him as an emergency by the time he left. The full backs converted to wing backs not lacking at this level: Alonso, Walker, Rose, Trippier, Davies, Bellerin, Cresswell, Bertrand, Mendy. I think Shaw and Clyne could make the switch pretty comfortably too. Robertson would be better as a wing back because it doesn't involve quite as much defending. shaw, clyne, cresswell, and Robertson don't really count though do they, because they don't play as wing backs. If they do I would include players like Nathan Redmond as wing backs, as I believe he would do well as one. Also, Bertrand definitely played as a winger as well as a fullback, Alonso as an outside mid in Italy. For me, a wing back needs the qualities of a wide player first, the ability to run for days second, and the defensive ability of a fullback third. Which is why I also think Diouf is not just being played out of position, he is definitely our best wing back. Regardless, you're right that fullbacks can make good wing backs; but I believe it's also clear that wide midfielders and true wingers, or the occasional central midfielder or striker like Daley blind and diouf, can also become good wing backs.

7 for me too. Happy with the defense now, but would of like wing backs and a prolific striker. We have without doubt strengthened the team.

8 - Hughes has shown flexibility in his management for the 1st time and i am more than happy with our transfers in and out. I didn't want arnie to go but he wanted to leave so we move on, it was never going to be easy to replace him, but a short term fix in jese is looking like a good move whilst we keep looking for someone permanent.

Binary! It already is 0-1, 1-0, 1-1 old capped cunt would have been proud. One thing I will say with a keeper of Butlands quality, and a back line or shawcross, Zouma, winner and BMI I can not see many (save for 3/4 teams) scoring against us. Unfortunately we have missed a trick by signing wing backs that can get the ball forward quick enough to cause many problems. Will we be hard to beat? Sure. Will we score many? Not a fucking chance. Binary! I don't mind binary as long as it's stoke 11 whover we play 0.

But your point was that 'most decent wing backs are converted attackers'. It isn't true. Cresswell did play as a wing back last season and Bertrand is a full back who played out of position as a winger to do a job. Robertson has played as a wing back under Bruce as well. Diouf's ability to run all day and to defend are actually better than his qualities as a winger, which require a quality on the ball and consistent crossing ability he doesn't have.

No but he was on of the reasons, he needs help and Adam wouldn't offer that, I find it strange a few think we've sorted the midfield out, we're still pretty weak in that area.

This is what I mean and demonstrates why I resent the influence the transfer window actually has. Marks out of ten? We can't rationally know until mid October and we can see how things are panning out.

I think Adam should have left with Whelan, to be honest. Both looked old last season. I quite agree with you about midfield, I would have liked at least one more in for insurance.

5/10 as we have really left ourselves short in key areas that were clearly a big issue before the window opened (wingbacks / strikers) and actually look threadbare in the engine room, The net spend figure says enough about the reality of the real ambition this football club has Think you commemtary is spot in but score hi , if I'd said in May we'd sell one of our best players replace him with a loan , and onoy invest what we recouped in sales it would be a 3 st best . this squad simply won' score enough to keep itself out of a dog fight . Haha you can always rely on good old Benji. If your a stoke fan I will eat my own shit

It's not just about who has gone and who has come in though is it. It is also about who we have retained. With us seemingly becoming a bit of a feeder club to Burnley, and Ryan's contract talks dragging on, I actually feared that he might have gone. Also I feared a late big bid from Arsenal or Liverpool for Jack, which either didn't happen or was derisory in value. So keeping them 2 is a massive + for us. At first losing errr, I forget his name now, whatever, was a massive blow, but gotta say I think we (a) got a decent price, and (b) glad to be shut, as I think he'd have turned into a right mard arse and a catalyst for discontent in the dressing room. So...On the whole....a 7 for me... Feeder club for Burnley? Fantastic. Getting a fee for squad players fantastic. Waiting to see what Burnley's bid for Jack will be in the Jan transfer window pmsl

1 Jack Butland 3 Erik Pieters 4 Joe Allen 5 Kevin Wimmer 6 Kurt Zouma 7 Stephen Ireland - injured 8 Glen Johnson 9 Saido Berahino 10 Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting 11 Jesé 12 Josh Tymon - kid 14 Ibrahim Afellay – injured? 15 Bruno Martins Indi 16 Charlie Adam 17 Ryan Shawcross 18 Mame Biram Diouf 20 Geoff Cameron 22 Xherdan Shaqiri 24 Darren Fletcher 25 Peter Crouch 28 Julien Ngoy - kid 29 Jakob Haugaard 31 Thibaud Verlinden- kid 32 Ramadan Sobhi 33 Lee Grant So, that's a Premier League squad of 20, with 2 long-term injured and 3 more ‘kids’. Is that correct? That’s doesn’t make it feel like a good transfer window? Too many squad places were taken up with ageing pros this was blocking the way for our youngsters.I expect to see more kids occupying the bench this season and giving us a chance to see what they van do
