It needs to be the same date for all leagues, otherwise we would be at a distinct disadvantage - how about July 31st? All settled before every league starts.

Needs to happen.
Actually in the Coutinho case I think it would make Liverpools stance stronger
- Sorry Phil we are not allowed to buy a replacement as the window has closed so you aint going to Barca now my son.

Are you sure? "The window across Europe runs until 31 August. The Premier League's move means that while clubs will be able to sell until that date, buying activity will cease on 9 August for the 2018-19 season."

Because thats not what the article says. It says they will be able to sell until the european league's window shuts

You can still SELL after the window closes you just can't buy.

Most teams this year made a great issue of not selling before a replacement was brought in. I think most teams will simply put a "not for sale" sign on certain players and will more easily justify that by saying "We can't bring in a replacement, so you can't buy him. Full stop."

If it doesn't work they can always change it back.
I think it will be better and that eventually some/many other countries will follow suit.

If that's right that's a recipe for disaster. You've done all your buying and are more than happy with your team on 9th August. Then your top goalie, Centre half and striker get proper tapped up by a foreign club and all put transfer requests in. Now I know you don't have to sell but the players don't have to play either do they, the team becomes completely destabalised and you're in the shit until January. I'm all for shortening the window but it seems like madness to even consider not co-ordinating it with the rest of Europe.

I've just listened to Peter Coates on H&J. Pretty uncomfortable listening. Couldn't really answer the questions posed to him and was caught on the hop. Repeated himself and came across as defensive. The questions I thought were fair.

The Premier League's move means that while clubs will be able to sell until that date, buying activity will cease on 9 August for the 2018-19 season." The article has been changed very quickly then. Without doubt when it was first published it said "buy or sell", as you will see if you read through the earliest comments on it. I can't help but think this is a foolish move by the PL then.

Because thats not what the article says. It says they will be able to sell until the european league's window shuts The BBC journalism dropped a bollock then. For at least the first few minutes after publishing it said clubs would not be allowed to buy or sell, which is clearly where the confusion in the comments came from.

It's a stupid move by the Premier League. It will only lead to European clubs coming after our players after the window. For it to work it would need to apply to every UEFA league.

The questions I thought were fair. I agree and was surprised by his defensive attitude. Having said that, there must be a legal reason why the teams could not prevent players from leaving in the first two weeks of the season if they really insist on it. It is too bad PC didn't elaborate. Either if didn't want to say or he hadn't thought of about, which I doubt and probably explains why five owners voted against it.

Which European clubs will be able to afford a Premier League club's best players?
A handful I'd suggest. And a lot of clubs are going to be made aware of these intentions from pretty early in the window. It's therefore on them to prepare for that eventuality.
It's good news.

Earlier in this window we were panicking 'cos no-one in Europe would be able to afford any of our cast offs. Now we're panicking 'cos we think all of Europe will come swooping in & steal all our best players?

Should be open all year (tin hat on). Why tin hat on?. Back in the old days that was case and it was OK. I'm all in for all season window under the condition that it'll be only English players who can be transferred all season.

There's an argument to be had that it could make things worse. Suppose a rich European team loses their best player to injury in the first match; they go after a PL player and make "an offer they can't refuse". Now the PL team loses their best player and can't replace him until January.

I remember being excited as a kid when John Tudor signed in the middle of the season (from Coventry, I think) and scored with a header on his debut. Can't remember who it was against.

Don't get the fuss. Once our window shuts, no European club will come in for premier league players. They will know they either just won't sell, or you can pay about twice what the players worth, your choice.
If you want coutinho well before our window shuts it's 135m. If you try it after you can either do one or it will cost you 270m. Simple.

If that was to happen a player would simply be suspended by his club on no wages till he decided to play.

PL clubs won't want to sell players if they're not in a position to replace them. But as been seen by the actions of some players they can force moves. Some clubs can stand strong but most won't. Plus a lot of players have release clauses etc, if they're met after our transfer window closes, nothing the club can do to stop that sale.
