Selling your captain just sends out the wrong message.
And it's not just that, he's a bloody good player still.
We'd be absolutely mad to sell him.

I actually know someone who knows Jon so I should be able to find out eventually if he took a pay cut or not. I'll not bother him now because I'm worried about his health. Only seen him once this year and he looked awful. It just doesn't strike me as something he would do. I'll save you the trouble. Walters didn't leave for less money but Walters wasn't our highest paid player and his wage with us fell within their structure. I know that when Fuller was seeking a contract extension at the same rate of £40k per week (subsequently refused), both Huth & Shawcross were on £28k at that time & they were trying to persuade Ricardo to accept a reduce amount extension. I realise that it was a long time ago, but if Shawcross subsequently secured a contract linked to being the highest paid player, then this could well be the current stumbling block. If the club are acknowledging the need to pay more to attract new (better) players, then there may be a reluctance to automatically jack up the pay packets of existing players. This last bit is pure speculation on my part.

I pray to God it's nonsense, and a new contract is around the corner.
Not in the knicker wetter camp but this could be the straw that breaks the camel's bladder.

Can't believe supporters screaming "take £10m".
How the hell are we going to replace a consistent, home grown experienced Premier League CB for £10m in this market?
It's just about 10 years to the day since Ryan arrived and I hope he'll be with us for another 3 or 4 seasons to come.

I am pretty sure that Ryan is the most highly regarded player at the club by the senior management and PC in particular. His loyalty and off the pitch attitude chimes with them and it would require a big shift by them to just let him walk whatever MH plans.

If he does go to Burnley it will make a mockery of our contract negotiations in this instance.

Terms of the current contract and any future contract could be an issue.
If Ryan has a clause in his contract saying he will be paid the same as the highest paid player at the Club - an increased salary if we signed another player on a higher fee - then this could be a stumbling block for the Club. I am not saying there is such a clause in Ryan's contract but it is reported.
If Ryan was our best player (he has been - was but now?) then such a clause is understandable. The Club may be unhappy with such a clause if we are looking to recruit a higher level of player and this could be the stumbling block with a new contract?
Just a though but like us all we do not know the actual detail.

Why would Hughes accept the bid? If the bid is accepted it will have nothing to do with the manager and will be decision made between CEO and Owner? You don't think the Hughes has the final say on whether his captain and longest serving player gets sold? Hughes has the final say on who should be captain If I was Ryan, I wouldn't be too happy when Mark Hughes frequently mentions Darren Fletcher as a good leader on the pitch

Hi Dave, regarding point 1, I was informed by what I consider to be a reliable source that Ricardo was seeking an extension based upon previous terms (albeit he was in the latter stages of his career). The persons who told me were witness to the Huth / Shawcross/ Fuller discussion. The rest of your post I agree with entirely.

I was led to believe that fuller asked for a contract extension at the time all and sundry were getting them. He wanted an extension on his salary at that time rather than some of the ridiculous levels that were spouted at the time. He never once agitated for a move to Sunderland either.

Surely following Hughes' comments in regards to playing 3421 and a commanding back 3 of Zouma, ShawX and BMI it is not in his plans to sell ShawX at this stage.

Dave, I remember there being talk around the time of 'losergate' that Ryan was unhappy not just with Pulis but with our management for leaking it publicly.
Any truth in that?

I can only conclude that our fans are fucking mental and the club is fucking broken if there is a shred of a possibility of this happening and people being happy with it.

I don't disagree but until he actually leaves, particularly to a club such as Burnley, it is perhaps best to keep the powder dry. For now, I say it is very concerning. Were he to leave for Burnley it would be pretty unforgivable in my opinion.

There's something not right with this shawcross situation. If he does go surely we'd have to spend 20million + to replace him.
