Can someone give me a legitimate reason why the club feel its ok to go into the season with the right backs we have?
Just one decent reason...

Johnson must have something on Hughes, why else would he give a player who's best days (if he had any) well behind him, another year?

Can someone give me a legitimate reason why the club feel its ok to go into the season with the right backs we have? Just one decent reason... I'm ok with Bardsley, if fit, as back up. It's the useless cretin he's backing up that astonishes me.

Our right back is certainly making a good case for himself by getting on the scoresheet...

Re signing Johnson made no sense when we did it and his pre season stroll abouts just re enforce the non sensical decision. His positioning is shocking, his decision making when he has time on the ball poor and his crossing makes Eric look like Giggs

Our right hand side keeps me awake at night. To give Johnson a new contract was quite frankly ridiculous, he looked off the pace all season last season and with Shaq in front of him who isn't the best defensively it's a real weak point.
I like Phil Bardsley but he seems a bit injury prone plus he's a bit of a walking red card although I'd feel a bit more at ease if Bards was our no.1 right back but I doubt he will be

You just hope that between now and August 12th Glen Johnson wakes up one morning and remembers what he does for a living !

Bardsley must start at Everton if fit because defensively Johnson is woeful and has been for a while

I have always felt that Johnson & Bardsley had their contracts extended as a precaution to stop them leaving for nothing and as a stop gap to give Edwards another year to develop. I actually think Bardsley is pretty good and should be our first choice. Johnson started off last season quite well and got into the England squad but has been a shadow of his former self since returning from injury.

Edwards has been given a fair amount of game time and could be given more. It's good to have Bards in case Edwards needs a break. Johnson can go.

Makes sense, even though Bards is the one that I'd keep, whilst signing another.

If the possibility of us being seriously after a right-back is opened up by this, could be the best news of the summer

Knowing Stoke we'll just sign another midfielder and play Cameron at RB instead...

I like Bards but you can't make an omelette without breaking a few eggs I guess.
If it means we get a new first choice right back then it's a deal that needs doing.

Letting Bardo goes makes zero sense. It'd be better if it was Johnson - but if it opens up the room to allow us to get a proper right-back in, I'll take it! Seeing Johnson trundling up and down the line in pre-season has hopefully pushed Sparky over the edge and made him realise he had to do something

Letting Bardo goes makes zero sense. ...Except it means getting hopefully a better and more pacey RB in at first choice which nearly everybody on here is crying out for? Bardsley and Johnson are both 32 now so one of them needs to go surely...

Seemed odd to offer him a deal unless he'd pre qualified for it and we had to give him it. If not it was a bloody daft thing to do.

Hard to work out what Hughesy saw to justify the extension. Can't remember such a dramatic collapse of form in a player.

Johnson shouldn't be taken into consideration and isn't even good enough for back up. The muddled thinking at this club atm is absolutely infuriating. And that started with giving Johnson a new deal despite his legs clearly going. He can't run anymore and it's not even hard to see. I wouldn't trust him if we were in the Chanpionship. They've got to suck it up, sign a right back and keep the better back up.

Hughes definitely intervened to keep him. It looked a million miles off then he said something in the press and a couple of days later it was done. All with Hughes gushing over him.
