I doubt if this rumour has much basis in fact but I'd be happy if it was true. Not just because he is a decent manager and lives near enough to make it a good move on geographic grounds - but also because I despise Mike Ashley and he deserves every bit of bad luck he gets. It was Mike Ashley that finally killed off Bourne Sports - Stoke's only pro sports shop with knowledgable staff. He bought Bournes and binned it, destroying 50 years of history, memories and jobs. I totally agree with Lakeland, Ashley is a rotter. And apparently under the premise that they were converting it to a SD and keeping on the staff. A premise which unfortunately for the poor fuckers who worked there looks to be untrue.

virtualglobetrotting.com/map/rafael-benitezs-house/view/google/He's certainly got one hell of a house on the Wirral. How does he commute up to the north-east? Helicopter? If he wants the convenience of a NW job, he'll have a long wait for one of the big boys. Can't see why you'd leave a potential monster club like Newcastle unless there were real problems, and weren't they all sorted when he was given control of transfers? Can see him ticking every Coates box though in the unlikely event it's a runner.

Since Liverpool, he's failed in every single job that he's had. The exception to that is Chelsea, but he was only there for ten minutes. Even Liverpool never really recovered from the mess he made in his last season there. He has hardly failed at Newcastle. He took over when they were already pretty well doomed and has got them promoted at the first attempt. Surprisingly, most relegated teams don't get back to the Prem at the first attempt - so I'd say he's been a success. They were 1 point off 17th when he took over, hardly doomed. He's done well this season though but some mags up here reckon he's off because he's aware how poor the defence is and Ashley apparently not wanting to stump up a decent sum to give them a quality back 4. He's said that he's not sure he'll be there just after getting promotion, that just strikes me as very odd. He may be looking for a way out right now.

This could be a runner and he does have some links at Stoke. Hes been to Clayton Woods quite a few times
It does seem like he wants out. BUT the big problem is the budget of Stoke vs. Newcastle.
We do have a stronger squad though so maybe that could interest him?
PLIBT
Good rumour mate thats made my day

Don't normally post on rumours but I'm putting one up from the weekend.. cos it's a good one.. so put your spud guns down..! Was with a long time Geordie mate of mine who is very matey with a notorious ex Chairman of the Toon.. Reckons that Benitez is still disillusioned with the current owner despite a successful season and Is looking to work back in the NW.. I had heard his name whispered around the Britannia a few times this season but never took it seriously.. Might be complete bollox but he was Adam Ant regarding Sir Peter's interest.. is that a dong thud I hear? N Rafa could turn out to be our Prince Charming.

PLIBT Good rumour mate thats made my day Listening to Steve Stone and Shay Given on 5 Live last night we will have a more competitive budget than Newcastle next season. They are both convinced that Ashley will try and do things relatively cheaply rather than push the boat out.... Well comparing the 2 clubs from the last time both were in Premier League in 2015 Newcastle Income = 130m Wage bill = 65m (down from 78m the year before which does suggest they tightened the purse strings) Profit = 36m Net debt = 81m State they are in: These figures are for the year supporters complained that Mike Ashley was running Newcastle as a cheapened flagbearer for his Sports Direct empire, aiming to finish mid-table, sniff at cup runs, and bank TV fortunes. They called on him to spend, and the staggering truth is: he did. The accounts confirm that Newcastle spent a net £80m on players, including Georginio Wijnaldum and Aleksandar Mitrovic last summer for £14.5m each, then Jonjo Shelvey and Andros Townsend in January for £12m each, and were still relegated. Ashley, who has pledged to stay, still has £129m loans outstanding from his initial financial underpinning of the club. Stoke Income = 100m Wage bill = 67m (up from 61m the year before) Profit = 6m Net debt = 33m So it does seem that although Newcastle has a greater income by 30m the spending power is about the same. Ashley is running the club at a profit whilst we are break-even. But I cant see that we have a BIGGER budget in any sense. Maybe Benitez is pissed about that extra 30M that Newcastle could spend on players but Ashley refuses to.

It amazes me on here when people dismiss alternative manager's in place of Hughes who have a quality cv in being EUFA manager of the year EUFA trophys in abundance, and they don't come up with who they want but are quick to slag off everybody else's choice. Quality managers attract quality player's so for those who crave expansive football as their goal please enlighten us in telling us who you think can bring that to Stoke City

A couple of Newcastle fans I know say he's done well & been loyal staying on after relegation but think he'll be offski in the summer as the chairman isn't meeting his expectations. Time will tell I guess..

It would be one thing for him to leave a big club like Newcastle having just got them back into the Premier League.
It would be another thing altogether for his next job to be Stoke City.
It's not like a bloke with his pedigree would be short of offers here or in Europe.
If location is the key, it would seem to me he's more likely to see what happens to Koeman at Everton, or even Klopp or Guardiola.
He would aspire to European football, so which club gives him the best chance of breaking into that top 7? If Ashley could be persuaded that is a good strategy to sell the club (or even more trainers), he might invest a few quid to buy the right players. In those circumstances, it's probably Newcastle United that would be more capable of hitting "the next level" than us.

As long as Ashley is in charge at Newcastle they will always be a basket case of a club prone to imploding. I have to say I was surprised when Rafa went there thinking he wouldn't be able to work with the owners and the probability of championship football might be beneath him. But he took the job but not yet signed a new contract so who knows? Lots of good reasons why Stoke might be attractive for him and I think him and Coates would get on very well.

I know it's unlikely but, I would be over the moon getting him in.
What are Rafa's signings like?...and have they been successful on the whole?
What's his managing like?....how would he cope managing players like Arnie? Imbula?

My overriding memory of him is bringing a Liverpool side that was gunning for the title and playing full backs on the wing to counter us. I'm not a fan.

We should not forget that, since we got promoted to the Premier League, Newcastle have been relegated from it - not once but TWICE! Given their fan base and income that suggests there is something wrong with the way they are run. Under Ashley they seem to consistently punch BELOW their weight. You can argue that, under Coates (this time round) we punch at or above our weight. Normally, I'd still say we'd be whistling in the wind expecting to attract him. But he does seem wedded to the idea of staying on the Wirral which puts us in with a decent shout if all is not well in his relationship with the idiot Ashley. Fingers crossed.

Managing a big club doesn't make you a good manager. Juande Ramos inexplicably got jobs at Spurs and Real Madrid, tanking at both. Since Liverpool, he's failed in every single job that he's had. The exception to that is Chelsea, but he was only there for ten minutes. Even Liverpool never really recovered from the mess he made in his last season there. He has hardly failed at Newcastle. Surprisingly, most relegated teams don't get back to the Prem at the first attempt - so I'd say he's been a success. I'd call it a C+, since he was brought in to keep them up and failed to do so. Promotion on the first attempt isn't easy, but they managed it under Chris Hughton last time, and second place really is the bare minimum that would have been expected of them at the start of the season.
