I don't think Hughes is wedded to a particular formation, especially not the 4231 no more. Shaq will never be a prem no 10 imo (prepared to be proved wrong, because I want him on the pitch, but not double marked, crowded out and kicked apart in the middle). With Bojan in a 433 it's the false 9 you're describing which certainly worked as a surprise surprise. I have some faith in Diouf and Ramadan as wingbacks etc. Better than our fullback configuration. Summer window and Academy to improve on that. I stay supportive but johns and Pieters aren't really cutting it in a back four anyway. So... Butland Shawcross Bruno Muniesa Diouf Allen ? Ramadan Shaq Berahino Arnie ? Good looking team but finding a good enough ? will be ahuge job; of the current playing staff it has to be Cameron. Shawcross looks uncomfortable at best in a back 3. And do we really want to be using Diouf and Ramadan as wing backs? We haven't got the squad for 343 and would needed a new CB and 2 new wing backs. Also it's not the best use of Arnie and Shaq imo.

You have to build a system that concedes as least as possible whilst creating chances for your forwards. Sounds simple, rarely is. It is up to the management team to sift through the squad and find a regular base system that can do this with what we have, or with what we have that can be extended with transfers. Like Leicester with the 4-4-2 that they used, we have to find out our key players and how they fit together, how their strengths and weaknesses play off against each other. The way I look at our general squad as is; I see an experienced back four, lacking in pace with full backs that have limited quality on the ball - a midfield that is hard working but lacking in pace and creativity. Three wide men that like cutting in and a slow forward line that would thrive from crosses with a certain configuration and through balls with another. So, how would YOU create a system from that and what would YOU do to change it over the summer? So a good proportion of managers are shit then lol, most do not do what you state, this is the whole problem with the board, posts like this which are both unrealistic and downright stupid.

As Macari said, build the spine. Butland, Indi and shawwcross, Cameron, Shaq (most important player in the team) Berahino. Buy 2 fullbacks, add allen, Sobhi and Arnie. Top 8.

In hindsight I agree. It is a bit daft suggesting managers set up a system that suits the players that they have. They should really have their principles and try to hammer the players into their preferred system, even if they don't fit into it.

Like a few others have mentioned, I think we should be:
Butland
New RB Shawcross Bruno New LB
Sobi Allen New CM Arnie
Shaq
Berahino
We should build a team around Shaqiri, we have to keep him fit, play him behind the front man and let him pick the passes like he has done the past two games. He made the goal v the dippers, made one for Arnie on Saturday and put another on a plate for him and then scored a worldy.
This first 11 with players like Grant Cameron Muniesa Walter's Crouch Adam Johnson Peters Whelan and several out of the academy putting pressure on would be good.
Coatsey will want to see academy players coming through and being given a chance. As a rule of thumb, from concept, I think it's around 10 years before you see the effect of the academies, especially for a club of our size. So I think this will be on this summers agenda when PC TS meet with Hughesy.
I think to get to the starting 11 mentioned above, we're looking at approx £30m to bring in three quality players. This is small beer in premiership terms and we'll need to invest this much just to consolidate because that's the world that SCFC operate in nowadays.
Just my opinion of course 😊

People keep saying that it is a squad game, it isn't, it's a team game. Wehave a decent squad but have yet to find the players who can blend into a team.
The forwards have to be able to rely on service from the midfield, the midfield have to rely on the defence if they are to move forward.
This season as in many previous we have had the occasional game where we looked to be a good team. Unfortunately we have had a lot of games where we have looked as if it was the first time the players had met.
We must aim for a balanced approach, record signings make the headlines but looking back some of our best signings were bargains.

Slightly not answering the question
We need an athletic ( younger than Adam and whelan) midfielder to add some energy and tackling to the midfield alongside Allen and back Allen up.
Allen can't do it all by himself, the opposition will just pick him off and play around him

We have to find a dominant central midfield player who can drive the team forward
If Shaq stays then he can be the main creative player
Beyond that we have to hope the Berahino starts to look like a striker and we find two quck atheletic full backs who can cross a ball

These days with televised games the format against the next opposition is analysed to death. Prior to that scouts were sent to the game.
This has led to teams changing formation for every game. This concentration on opponents can take our eye off the needs of our own team. I would like us to concentrate more on suiting our formation and style to the players we have and building a team. Chopping and changing each week isn't working.

Butland, Grant, Bachmann
Keep Bardsley as back-up and buy a no. 1 right back - maybe Iorfa from Wolves?
Shawcross Key signing will be BMI Keep Muniesa And sign another CB if the manager don't trust someone like Sweeney
I think Hughes will trust Pieters next season but we have to buy someone like Taylor from Leeds to fight with him
Allen Cameron Whelan I hope we will go for Mario Lemina from Juventus Turin to partner Allen Sell Adam and Imbula
Shaqiri Arnie Ramadan Diouf Berahino Walters
Let Bojan go home to Spain, sell Crouch and maybe Diouf if a good offer comes in

A lot depends on who the manager is.
Butland, Shawcross, Allen, Arnie, Cameron, Ramadan, and Berahino are probably the core.
Grant, Pieters, and Bardsley are squad players.
I can see any from Haugard, Shaquiri, Diouff, Imbula, Joselu, Whelan, Walters, Adam, Crouch, Muniesa, and Bojan possibly leaving.
Bony and Given will definitely go.
It's probably too big a re-building job to do all in one go, but either Hughes or somebody else has a lot of work to do in the summer.

If we do re-sign both Johnson and Bardsley, presumably we can rule out the new right-back that most are advocating actually arriving?
So would a new left-back, BMI and the long-fabled Whelan upgrade be enough of a summer spend?
Butland Grant Johnson Bardsley (Edwards) Shawcross BMI (Sweeney) Pieters New LB
New DM Whelan Adam Cameron Allen Shaq Arnie Ramadan (Verlinden) Berahino Diouf Walters Crouch (N'Goy)
Exits: Imbula, Bojan, Muni(?), Wollscheid, Joselu

Depressing thought to see all of Whelan, Adam, Johnson, Bardsley, Crouch and Walters still an integral part of the set up.

Yep - add Afellay to the midfielders and the room for maneuver in introducing new blood into the sharp end of the first-team picture starts to look pretty small once the obvious low hanging fruit for exits (Johnson and Adam) are retained. We'd have to see some maybe unexpected veteran exits to free the room up, but Hughes doesn't seem to be that way inclined.

We still don't have a frontline striker that will get us 15 or so a season unless Berahino steps up to the mark. If we assume Joselu has had his day and Bony won't be here anyway, I'd sign another striker and then when it came to January, let Walters or Crouchie go. With Diouf not really getting a run down the middle I can't believe anyone isn't suggesting another goalscorer.

I'd love a new striker as well, but on the basis that it looks like we will retain Berahino, Crouch, Walters and Diouf, and Ngoy in reserve, it is hard to see space in the squad. Crouch and Walters can go for me, with immense thanks for their sterling years of service of course, but Hughes seems destined to keep both of them for at least another season. Impressive cameos like last weekend (credit where it is due) will only serve to bolster his resolve to do so.

This is the pool in which we are fishing now - Imbula cost 18m, Shaq 12m, Berahino 12m, Crouch 10m. If we want to improve, this is the cost of players who will do so. If you take Sigi out of it, as he may be destined for Everton, and rely on Shaq as number 10 (dodgy, given his injury record), that is down to 30m, before you account for funds from sales (like Bojan, Joselu, Wolly, Imbula).

I don't think Trippier is realistic now at all. And the same for Sigurdsson really but if the Everton's of this world didn't want him, we'd be in with a chance. Taylor could do but I just don't see it. I think he may end up at West Brom! M'Vila is just your lovechild who I don't think we have an interest or else we'd have signed him already! I really hope to God BMI signs. If he doesn't it's a massive set back. The price is neither here nor there with them for me, I just don't think they'll sign for us.

I was more making a case for the type of player we need and the amounts we will need to spend. We have to be looking at a 50m gross spend, maybe 25/30m net (if all the players we want to sell get sold at a decent price). Wanting 30m for Sigi, and getting it, are two different things, IMHO. He will not want to slum it in the Championship and would the top 6 go for him again after his failed Spurs move? As for Trippier, I still think he may be tempted by regular first team football, given Walker is a pretty big impediment to his getting it at Spurs. I hold my hands up on M'Vila......still think he would do a cracking job for us, though, and for "less than half an Imbula". Taylor should be right at the top of our list, with Pieters' less than stellar form and Muniesa's suspect injury record. BMI should be held hostage once the season ends until he puts pen to paper - he is that important to us right now.
